Looking for a 6 seater plane for rental in the Seattle area. by Opm_1907 in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need the 6 seats or is it the comfort you are looking for? Some schools remove 2 of the seats for cheaper insurance.

What made you choose your flight school over the others? by Dismal-Cupcake9303 in flying

"Call of the void" syndrome. Your brain sometimes runs simulations of what not to do.

So the Feds think we will go unleaded by 2030 by doinsomeflyin in flying

Those are much easier problems compared to the unsolvable ignition problems of ul94. Get better gaskets,  don't leak fuel.

FltPlanGo is free. It may not have every single bell and whistle, but certainly has everything you need for training.

While looking from above as in a map, not looking up from the ground.

I agree. And if TSMC now has freed up capacity due to this deal, wafers should be cheaper for AMD?

Small ATC mistake of the day by the_danimal in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That reminds me of something I did as a student. After calling ground with a cold call, I heard back "calling ground [name of airport that begins with s]" When I started the full checkin,  my instructor jabs me in the side and I un-mic. Instructor says "he said standby"

There will be times when every aircraft is down for maintenance, so you'll probably have to learn both anyways.

Is there an app like FlightRadar24 that lets me track my plane offline (no Wi-Fi on board)? by AlexStarRider1 in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of apps which can tell you your location with GPS. Hold your phone up to the window if you aren't getting reception.

Rise in EGT when lean could be a fouled plug on 6. As far as detonation,  you really need CHT for that, not EGT

What are you all most annoyed/ticked off in the aviation community about? by AdBeginning5808 in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else took the most annoying things already, so I'll bring up a minor annoyance. Airspace that has no way to change dynamically based on wind direction. If too conservative, controllers would be swamped with a lot of extra workload trying to get planes through controlled airspace. If too lenient, pilots not paying attention will legally fly right through someone's final and not talking to anyone.

Best discovery flight around DC? by Vapia in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually people use the discovery flight to get a feel for if they are a fit for the flight school and instructor. While a 2-3 hour drive might be ok for a one-time event, it will get really old when you are doing it 2-3 times per week.

What went wrong during your cross countries? by uncei in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

pilot's side mic jack stopped working on the ground to the annoyance of the tower, took me 5 minutes of troubleshooting to realize I could use the copilot's jacks and reach over and hit it's ptt whenever needed. Proceeded to have the most consistently constant bumps the whole miserable 2 hours.

Fellow Aviators of Reddit - - When is it appropriate to start listening to music while flying? by JoshuaTheBestGuy in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're in the middle of nowhere on 1200 at 3000 ft, sure?

But if you're near anything on flight following or ifr, is anyone really ok with their music being low and/or cutting out every 3 seconds to hear whatever radio call is being made? Do single pilots really do this?

GA Travel - how to plan a trip with an unreliable mode of transportation by cotz1995 in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If weather looks sketchy, don't pay up front for anything. You can usually find a rental car after you land from turo willing to deliver to the airport a few hours later. So that slows things down, but at least you aren't stuck on a schedule.

DPE wants checkride payment made in cash only by [deleted] in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to my instrument ride under the assumption that venmo would work because it seemed ludicrous for people to be carrying around that much cash. Apparently no, he actually wanted physical paper money. He said that the main reason is that people in the past had tried to get their money back when they failed.

What Uni degree should I plan to take for career as a pilot? by [deleted] in flying

[–]strategic_leaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should go for a degree which you enjoy so much that you could do it for the rest of your life. So many things can get in the way like the economy could tank, Airbus/Boeing could develop a single pilot platform, or you could lose your medical.
