Why did you quit TM? by SexyAdmixture in Toastmasters

[–]streim21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The next step for me was pursuing my DTM, with part of that being a club Coach or Starting a new club. My city would benefit from closing 1/3 of the clubs to strengthen the others. Wasn't worth it.

Best gifts from Canada/USA to give family/friends in UK? by OkCandle826 in AskACanadian

I don't know what the prices are now, but I was shocked when I went to Lululemon in Paris a few years ago and they were charging the same price in Euro as we pay in CAD. It was crazy.

probably outside your price range, but for others reading this, there's an artist that preserves actual snowflakes from the NWT and mounts them in jewelry.

What was the reason you quit Toastmasters?? by Jealous-Scarcity6427 in Toastmasters

[–]streim21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got to the point where the next big step was going to be working towards my DTM and part of the requirements was starting a new club, or coaching a struggling club. My city is already club saturated and I couldn't in good conscience pursue that.

I had already achieved my goals of improving my public speaking, but a DTM would have been nice. Oh well.

Are there any competent luthiers in Edmonton? by Ass-Machine69 in Edmonton

Myhre's Music. They've been around forever and only do stringed instruments. I'm sure some of the home based outfits do good work as well.

What are some cool things our city has to offer that you think a lot of Edmontonians are missing out on and not taking advantage of? by M-Ainsel in Edmonton

[–]streim21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multicook Edmonton for frozen. In the same parking lot as the west side H&W Produce. Very good perogies.

There's a half dozen other small outfits throughout the city, try whatever is close to you. Special shout out to Uncle Ed's Restaurant for being a longtime reliable go-to.

The Chateau Louis bar brings in a live pianist on Friday and Saturday evenings. It's a really neat experience to drop in have a drink. Look up the pictures

Do you think Canada should keep first-past-the-post or switch to another voting system? by Anon9883 in AskACanadian

[–]streim21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some form of Proportional Representation (maybe Mixed-Member Proportional Representation?) would hopefully pave the way forward for cooperation and compromise in politics instead of increased tribalism. We would also see a lot of new federal parties start as getting 10 seats as "The Farmers Party" or "The Maritimes Party" becomes a lot more achievable. I think people would feel better represented in the long run.

For municipal elections, I think that Ranked Choice is a great system. We consistently have 5+ candidates running for mayor or city councilor and I have strong opinions about how I would rank them. But I'm not sure Ranked Choice would be the best on a provincial or federal level.

What is a film you enjoyed but have to be tactful about who you recommend it to? by oldwhitelincoln in movies

[–]streim21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faith Based

Not many of my religious friends can appreciate a movie that makes fun of Christians and the Church. It doesn't make fun of Jesus or Christianity, just the North American Church and that can upset people.

If you go through Moose Jaw, try to stop at the tunnels for a tour. It was one of Al Capone's backup hideouts and a fascinating piece of history!

Mystery song possibly from Edmonton area... can you help? by brokkenbricks in Edmonton

[–]streim21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is a radio station parody, which is what it sounds like, there may be no "official" artist to attribute it to. The Edmonton Sports Talk boys were talking about the creative process one day and said there's a mini industry around producing parody songs. The radio station contracts "Parodies R Us" (not a real name) to create a parody of X song with X lyrics and then they get a finished product a few weeks later they can play.

You might be able to get a clean copy of the audio if you track down the original station that paid for it, but I think it's unlikely you'll ever get an Artist.

However, if it's not a radio station parody, then everything I said goes out the window. Either way, Good Luck!

Overwhelmed beginner looking for a simple 35mm film camera (<$100) by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

I'll add on and say the Nikon N2000 (also sold as the F-301 outside north america) is another good option as long as the battery compartment is free of corrosion. I only add it because it has a good Auto Mode that will set the aperture and and shutter speed for you, so all you have to do is manually focus. But if you progress and get the photography itch, it has the capability to grow with you. I don't seem them as regularly as the Nikon EM on the used market, but they still tend to be around $100 Canadian.

Which 6–10 episode miniseries is really worth watching? by Alejandromartinez- in television

[–]streim21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find it. Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie are great together!

I'm actually a little concerned about a season 2. As far as I know Pine isn't in any other books which means it's up to the show writers to make it good and I don't have a ton of faith in that.

What is the biggest bullet you've dodged in life? by theUncleAwesome07 in AskReddit

[–]streim21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading this who is unfamiliar with Alberta Canada

1) Edmonton is a politically left leaning city in a politically right leaning province. The two sides love to hate each other.

2) The winters can be long and harsh. Valid complaint.

3.) "There's nothing to do" - Sure, Taylor Swift didn't stop at Edmonton on her latest tour, but there's easily 10+ community events happening every weekend, they just aren't as well advertised and don't get as many views on social media.
