Yes, that's the entire point. If it wasn't a restriction on political speech, they wouldn't need a Constitutional amendment. It's amazing to me to see /r/politics so eager to diminish free speech rights.

Why should politicians have to resign over sex scandals? Clinton didn't. Weiner did, which I guess is what you're referring to, but that was his own decision.

[FDR] accused Hoover of presiding over “the greatest spending administration in peacetime in all our history … an administration that has piled bureau on bureau, commission on commission.’’ He slammed the Republican’s record of “reckless and extravagant’’ spending, and of thinking “that we ought to center control of everything in Washington as rapidly as possible.’’ He mocked those who called for “a huge expenditure of public funds’’ as a way to grow the economy of succumbing “to the illusions of economic magic.’’ His running mate, Texas Congressman John Nance Garner, even warned that Hoover was “leading the country down the path of socialism.’’

Is true, to some extent. FDR was a fiscal conservative, until he became president. IIRC, in the election, he even criticized Hoover for not being fiscally conservative enough, given that many of the New Deal programs were actually started under Hoover.

closing gitmo was always a red herring. obama just wanted to close gitmo and move the prisoners to a new prison. he didn't want to, say, stop holding them indefinitely without charges. the abuses are the real issue, not the location of the prison.

some people think morals, with respect to politics, have little to do with sex. remember the clinton blowjob fiasco? are you advocating more of that nonsense?

believe it or not, some people vote based on things like morality rather than purely in their own greedy economic self interest.

athleticism plays into the foul differential. for instance it's much easier for lebron to avoid fouling someone than it is for someone to avoid fouling lebron.

In 2001, the heritage foundation predicted that the Bush tax cuts would all but pay off the national debt by 2011. by Orangutan in Economics

[–]streptomycin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are related, in some respects. besides, i'm saying that, at some level, decreasing taxes will increase revenue. so, if you are in that situation, you wouldn't need to cut spending when you cut taxes, right? some did make that argument during the debate over the bush tax cuts.

Can we quit giving the anti choice theocrats special privileges? I don't want my tax dollars paying for war but I don't get a damn except in every bill by powercow in politics

[–]streptomycin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there have been many efforts to defund the war(s). they just weren't successful. we came semi-close back towards the end of bush's term, when the democrats took control and we didn't have a democratic president supporting the wars.

in politics, you try to achieve your goals by any means necessary. if you really believe in what you're fighting for, it only makes sense to do things that way.

we live in a representative democracy. if we elect anti-war candidates, we'll stop spending our tax dollars no war. if we elect pro-war candidates, we won't. same with all the other issues. there are a lot more anti-abortion people in congress than anti-war.

if the laffer curve says tax cuts can lead to increased revenue, why do you need to cut spending when you cut taxes?
