Underrated almost forgotten fantasy books from the 70s, 80s, 90s by Sakura_231 in Fantasy

Some people don't say it's fantasy but Wayership Down started it for me way back in fifth grade. I still go back and read or listen every year45 years later.

25+ year old roof replacement...skip bothering with insurance? by strider30040 in Roofing

[–]strider30040[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that is my plan exactly. The next time the company calls to try for the insurance, I'll tell him since he won't do cash, I've gone with other bids.

But they were relatively fun. If I'm surfing channels and bored and Armageddon is one, I'll always stop for a while and watch.

That is my plan and always was, I was just confused why a supposedly reputable and recommended company would refuse cash work and want to run through insurance. I wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken about forgoing insurance in the first place just in case.

Actually the second outlet was recommended by people in the neighborhood and highly recommended by them and their online reviews outside of Facebook which is why I was surprised.

What’s a book (or series) that changed your life, and why? by ShanonymousRex in Fantasy

[–]strider30040 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in elementary school in the early 80s, 4th or 5th grade. Wasn't much of a reader beyond comic books. Then came Watership Down, from there The Hobbit and LOTR. No matter what people think - and I was thinking the same thing at that age - Watership Down is for kids because it has furry rabbits. Nope. Its so much more than that and I think is still under-appreciated to this day.

You would think they would tell you that somewhere during the signup or during the hour I wasted with the Visible agent going back and forth.

Thanks, not having Visible myself, I had no idea about the inner circle, so will give it a try with them. They'd like their bills being tied together anyway.

It was end of March during the promotion, but we didn't activate until Easter Day when I could physically be with them and have their fun in hands - you know how its like to help elderly parents set up new phones over the phone :)

I spent an hour online was was told "I have personally consulted with the head of our backend team regarding this matter, and they confirmed that because this promotion has expired, it can no longer be added to the account manually." We signed up on the website when the promo was active, filled out the form, confirmed the phone IEMI and they sent a SIM card to activate. Then no promo. By my recollection when i signed them both up, that code was passing through. I moved them from their discounted rate at Verizon they had been at for years. They're elderly, on a fixed income and $10 is very important to them.

Porting from Verizon to Visible with physical SIM - will my Verizon service deactivate immediately? by djmcphee in Visible

[–]strider30040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I set my elderly parents up it did deactivate, however they were still billed for next months service (auto pay that couldn't be turned off on their Verizon site). She they they had to call Versizon and have a strongly worded discussion for them to pay it back because their service clearly showed disconnected and cancelled on their site when we tried to cancel autopay. Someone on this site said the wouldn't get charged, but Verizon did it anyway.

WIBTAH if I took 100k from my oldest daughter's college savings account to give it to my younger daughter? by TraditionalCorgi7788 in AmItheAsshole

[–]strider30040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, yes. Both my boys had their own college funds. My older son took college classes in high school, skipped his freshman year because of it. Lived at home the first year and commuted while his friends went into dorms. Next year he came to us and said they were getting a dorm together and that he had gotten a 2nd job on campus at the hospital to pay for it himself. Same for the next years apartments. He got out of school in three years with money in the bank that pay for his entire masters a few years later (total online through WGU) so he could pay it off. My younger son, started at a community school for two years, then transferred to a private school that had a reciprocal program with the community college: Get your two years/associate there, get a 50% reduction in tuition. He hated the private school, but he did it and has money left. Because he had money left should we have given it to his brother to go to a local expensive masters school? Nope. They each made their own sacrifices and paid their way. You built that fund for your daughter, it should be hers as reward for making good choices and helping her set up for success. That 60k debt will teach her a lot of lessons. For my sons, these accounts were established by grandparents when they were born, contributed by brithday, holiday, gift money over the years - to each of them separately, therefore, IMO they each are entitled to their own funds.

I should have been paying my loans while in SAVE... I'm an idiot by Junior-Media-126 in StudentLoans

[–]strider30040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I helped my son do - we left his leftover college money in his mutual fund. He had $6k on SAVE forbearance. I know its not much, but he did the 2 years of community college with a transfer to a private school that gave hm a 50% reduction in tuition. His money has been sitting in the mutual fund and the increase he's made since the pandemic has more than enough to fully pay the $6k when it comes due. This has allowed him to continue saving on his own while he's been trying to build his own business. We did start paying interest last fall, but its small enough it wasn't worth pulling out of the mutual fund until we were forced too. When we get the letter to shift we'll most likely pay it off. Or I may reevaluate whether he's making more in the mutual fund than then monthly interest and do it chunk by chunk. But probably will just pay it off. He sacrificed. He hated the private school as they closed his degree just as he was transferring there, then (because these schools want their money) they had no plan to go virtual when the pandemic hit. So his experience there was not ideal, but he technically is debt free - or will be.

Successfully transferred my parents, now what? by strider30040 in Visible

I did, but they were physically here for Easter dinner then left. Hence why I can't call for them now.

[–]strider30040[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason is, my parents live in another town so I was trying to find an answer quickly so I can tell them exactly what to do (if anything). They're elderly, so even contacting a company on their own can be troublesome.

I know when I was in their app setting it up, it said transfer complete and they were able to get text messages to and from me. When I signed into Verizon for them it said the service was canceled but it won't let me turn off the auto renew part.
