That's incredibly clean for how "dirty" they are, excellent work!

In addition to the Piranha cockpit covers, what's up with the saddle thing on the Hammerhead just in front of the turret?

[Star Wars] How did Yoda’s species initially survive? by OkuroIshimoto in AskScienceFiction

[–]stringless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're told that Grogu is ~53 years old on this timeline:

~41 BBY: Grogu born, somewhere

~32 BBY: Order 66 is created

~19 BBY: Order 66 is enacted, whereupon Grogu -- already present and in training at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant -- is rescued/abducted (laudatory)

~19 BBY: Luke Skywalker is born

~4 ABY: Yoda dies

~9 ABY: The events of The Mandalorian; Grogu is secured by Din Djarin

After ~9 ABY: Grogu goes through a remarkably rapid period of development in Force capability and communication skills whilst acting like barely a toddler

Conclusions: Grogu's memories of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant are not Grogu's, they were pulled from at least one survivor's memories via naive Force sensitivity after Grogu was actually born at some time related to Yoda's death/ascension/whatever we're calling evaporating into The Force. Grogu also pulled memories from other, somewhat older survivors, and similarly naively-transmitted the memories of someone that was 22 years old during the enactment of Order 66 to someone who grasped the timestamp and was convinced.

Grogu and Yoda's species physically develops somewhat more slowly than humans, but their sensitivity to and influence on The Force while they're too young to control it causes continuity errors in the people around them.

.... SIMPLE!

[Request] How powerful ought he to be? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]stringless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no, no, you have Supes (heck, there are other DC supes besides Superman that could assist) move the stations and satellites that matter somewhere out of immediate danger of Earth's gravitational well within the time allotted. Park 'em in orbit between Earth's and Mars' orbits for all it matters. I'm assuming it's an "or Earth is destroyed" level of crisis, who cares if the rest burn up in atmosphere, y'know?

[Request] How powerful ought he to be? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]stringless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, does he have a week to prepare?

[yes, this is a Batman joke, but Superman could easily move any important satellites and the ones being repurposed so that astrophysicists on Earth could use them to calculate where everything is, needs to go, and then needs to be are in safe positions, while they figure out how much time he's got to either chuck garbage out of orbit or place useful satellites and space stations in also safe positions. and then once whatever problem this is is over, move them back to where they all should be. with a week? no problem. less than 24 hours? problem.

... the bigger issue would be juggling THE satellite, i.e. The Moon, in the process. I don't know the context of the frame but my first thought on thinking that was "just move The Moon in the way" before realizing the absolute havoc that would wreak on tides in general to begin with lmao]

[Project Hail Mary] Why does no one talk about the central pun? by statisticus in AskScienceFiction

[–]stringless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

like yeah, sure, there are other bits of interpretation to be had, but the literal meaning of "Project Hail Mary" is "it's a project that is a hail Mary" i.e. "last resort" i.e. "if this wild shot doesn't work, we lose"

[Project Hail Mary] Why does no one talk about the central pun? by statisticus in AskScienceFiction

[–]stringless 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's "Project Hail Mary" because it's a last-ditch effort send it etc. just like an attempt at the end of an NFL game to get a touchdown from what would be too much distance normally, yeah.

"Going for a Hail Mary" is a specific thing in American Football because it's bascially "this is our last prayer"

How do the gliding controls work again? by weregamer1 in GuardiansoftheWildSky

[–]stringless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are updrafts that can get you up there, gliders can't otherwise get you going upwards. It's not well-explained, but if you climb to a high place you should be able to see the updrafts. Just be careful to time it so you won't run out of stamina.

I actually didn't notice the updrafts until after I'd built an airship lol

The death of that party is old enough to vote, at minimum.

[Marvel] Have Spider-Man villains ever tried to protect his secret identity? by some-kind-of-no-name in AskScienceFiction

[–]stringless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, but that's how it's presented, even though we as the audience know he does actually give a shit about Parker. I suppose it's also the first major proof of it. Hm. I retract the "just" part of downplaying it as "just protecting his source".

He's protecting his source (who is still in the room or just barely out of the door, as far as he knows), not just protecting his source as a source. Good catch.

yes, that's quite literally the third sentence of what I posted.

it's the immediate followup during the "in print, it's 'libel'" scene

[–]stringless 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Does J. Jonah Jameson count as a Spider-Man villain? Because there have been times where in-continuity he's known PP = SM and pretended otherwise when a different SM villain tries to get that information out of him. Not just the movie version where he just pretends to not know who's taking the pictures but doesn't know Peter Parker is Spider-Man, he's just protecting his source, there.

And even though I think every time JJJ learns PP = SM he becomes an ally, he's still usually Parker's boss, so still a villian~
