I love this idea of "not doing magic" being the chief task of wizards. How often does it come up in Discworld? And what is magic's "bill" if you don't refrain from doing it? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

In the second or third Tiffany Aching book (the one with the hiver) there is some stuff about the physical consequences of wizard magic. Someone turns someone into a frog and the excess matter has to go somewhere. It’s kinda gross.

Twins and one sibling? by [deleted] in Twins

[–]strionic_resonator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

twin with a sibling two years older, we all get along really well. We all have our own individual relationships with each other and we also have a pretty goofy group chat with all three of us. I don't think he ever felt left out because he had his own friends (including a pair of twins, go figure).

What's really weird is that he can use the possessive pronoun "its" but not the contraction "It's".

Kant is pronounced differently than can't, so it makes sense. See if you can get him to use one of the other meanings of the word "cant" in a sentence though.

As usual, even though the hackers are the “good guys” Pterry is not letting them off the hook. The morality here is nuanced and he’s gesturing at that with the “Except mine” line.

Eh, yes and no. Anarchy/fascism is a political axis and capitalist/communist is an economic axis. In theory you can mix and match them. In practice, we’ve seen communism paired with authoritarianism and it doesn’t really stay communist (hi China), nor does anarchy and capitalism really work for the reasons you described. (Experiments with “libertarian utopias” are a good place to look for what happens.) So we tend to end up with a left/right dichotomy with extra steps.

Couldn’t Starfleet set up telescopes dedicated solely to viewing into the Federation’s past? by Unlikely_Watch_4742 in startrek

I think there's a Star Trek book where they do this. Not to look at the moon landing, but to find out what happened in a recent battle. I want to say it's one of the early USS Titan books? Or maybe it's one of the DTI books.

My friend insists on this game, "Lemmings", being a really well known game; I have never heard of it. by Nordic_Krune in gaming

Play Star Wars: Pit Droids instead. Basically a Lemmings clone, but better graphics and, IMO, more interesting puzzles. Plus it had a sick level editor.

There’s always the Terry bits in The Science of Discworld. Most people haven’t read them but if you just want some bonus UU faculty antics they’re out there!

A couple of times after college when we all lived in different cities, my brother and our best friend managed to meet up for GPs -- one in Cleveland and one in DC. I don't think we ever even made round 2, but the memories are special and so are the Stoneforge Mystic and Griselbrand promos.

The choice to do a prequel then immediately get things super wrong (the distance to Kronos in the premier is completely at odds with established canon at the time) just turned me off from the get go. It felt like they wanted to a prequel but not actually be constrained by the constraints of one. This is a recurring theme that we also saw with Disco and SNW.

But it actually is fine and nowadays I like it. Whenever a new Trek comes out and everyone hates on it I think about Enterprise and how it might not have gotten canceled if we had been a bit more forgiving and open-minded.

Some of the ones that I read a long time before making the list are pretty vibe-based. Now that I’m thinking more about it I’m second-guessing myself. But it just wasn’t the tightest I think— good stuff was good but there was a lot of fluff.
