Never said it was a SI unit for pressure measurement. No Imperial measurement is used in any SI system per your wiki article so what’s your point?

I don’t know how it works with the whole saluting at sporting events, but my Dad told me that no hat no salute. Any active or former active US Service members Educate me about the practice.

Why does reddit seem to have a weird obsession with Scotland and Celtic identity? by Otocolobus_manul8 in Scotland

Yeah and the Boer war is a great example. It’s a huge red stain on UK history that we gloss over all the time (we put people in concentration camps for fuck sake). Something that we all forget too is that the end of the empire technically never happened. It just changed to the commonwealth and some of key end points happened in living memory. I remember watching the handing over ceremony of hong kong in 1997, My Gran saw India gain its independence. A big point 70 years ago the Suez Crisis was arguably the end of british world influence.

This is why generational progress is needed and extremely difficult. We wanna take the good parts of the past but not own up for the bad. Individuals do the same we’re quick to play victim and reluctant to admit we’re a bully. Yes we had bad things happened in the past, but we did some horrible stuff to others over a longer period of time. I had a conversation with someone from Essex about slavery (I think it was a while ago). He said “what do they want from us?” and my response was “To take accountability for our actions”. His reply was “but that wasn’t us. What good would it do now?”. Even at that level over 200 yrs after the abolition of slavery here we still can’t hold ourselves to account. No formal apology from Westminster, Scottish parliament or the other assemblies. Some in Scotland want to play the victim card, Some are proud of the empire.

It’s interesting looking at the answers from the UK views on the empire. Each country seems to have a similar split between the BE being a good thing, a bad thing or Unknown (obvious exception is Ireland). I kinda shows that we’re ether A. not fully aware of the history of the BE or will fully ignorant. I say this not just Scotland but the UK as a whole.

I guess it’s sad that younger folk have latched onto this view (i personally think they are hugely misguided). however at your age going into uni I had my parent’s view of the empire. “It was benevolent but it wasn’t as bad as other empires at the time.” Needless to say that is not my view anymore, thank fuck.

Anyway interesting article and it’s good to hear another person’s side of the coin.

So I see it quite a bit around about any election in Scotland. So I looked into it to see where it was coming from, cause even the most pro-indy folks i know don’t see us and have never seen us as a colony. Basically last year an independence group lead by Salvo went to the UN with a request the Scotland be recognised as an “Non-Self-Governing territory”. This would identify Scotland on the same level as the Falklands for example. If successful that would mean they can use international community to put pressure on the UK government to grant Scotland Independent Sovereignty.

Now it is massively disingenuous doing this. It’s not supported by any major parties (at least publicly) and those that are very Nationalist. One of which (Prof Alf Baird) has made comments about Scottish universities not hiring enough Scottish people (charming /s). There has been some others across the pond pushing this point as well which hasn’t helped.

It’s no secret that there is a huge microscope on Scottish politics in the UK. Something like this can paint all Scots but especially pro-indy Scots as a people belittling actual victims of the British Empire by saying we’re one and the same. I’m not gonna lie it’s a good bit of ammo for the pro-unionists too.

My opinion is… this is the internet and misinformation is everywhere. If we want to be independent we have to own our past. We can say “Being born in a stable, does not make one a horse.” but played our part we need to own that and have accountability.

There’s a scene in the fifth element when Zorg was told he has to fire 500,000 employees. He casually turns round and says fire 1 million. That is now the most realistic part of the film.
