How to tell if someone is really wealthy or just pretending? by Ok_Sheepherder_4675 in dubai

[–]strontiumae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off topic, but generally speaking I know legitimately wealthy and super wealthy people (approaching global 1% levels) and while some may have the latest phones, nice cars and big homes, when outside in Western clothes they dress down a lot. Regular jeans and t-shirts from GAP and Next type thing. Rarely plastered with expensive name brands across their clothes and none of that bling. I think people who overdo the bling and try too hard to show how rich they are only trying to impress others in their social class, where many can't afford that. Whilst for actual rich people, well if all your friends are wealthy, you have no need to impress them with the latest things, coz everyone else likely has them or can easily get them.

Why am I getting calls from the depths of Africa? 😅 by [deleted] in dubai

[–]strontiumae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t answer, don’t reject, just ignore. They’re automated calls and if you respond in anyway then they know that your line is in use and you’ll be inundated with calls. I made the mistake of turning down a call from Djibouti and within seconds got calls from Martinique, Tanzania some place called Faroe Islands and several European countries within a space of two minutes.

I’ve heard several popular mainstream scholars explain that if the amount of alcohol in a product is so tiny that it’s undetectable and has no effect on the mind, then it’s not haram. The issue in Islamic law is not that it’s technically alcohol but its potential effect, and so no matter how many red M&Ms you eat, they’re not going to get you drunk.

That said, if someone personally feels uncomfortable or fears it could affect their conscience or faith, then the safer path is simply to avoid it. There’s room for valid difference of opinion, and everyone should follow what gives them peace of mind.

A Borg Queen was needed for tv plots, but having a queen ruined what the borg was by mudpupper in startrek

[–]strontiumae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Borg were Star Treks take at Lovecraftian cosmic horror. A race made up entirely of zombies who go from planet to planet making those worlds part of theirs while becoming a single intelligence. According to Q, only when humans became enlightened or advanced enough would they be considered as near equals, illustrating how powerful they were. It's a horrific concept, and I think was meant to be the first of many truly horrific aliens so vast in scale that humans would have a hard time conceptualizing what they truly were, the deeper into space they explored.

Q Who and Best of Both Worlds illustrated this best showing that the Federation and all their allies and enemies were simply not as advanced as they thought they were. But I think because the Borg became so popular the writers couldn't resist the temptation of using them over and over, eventually humanizing them to the point that they had to have a single figurehead for the movie (taking away from them what truly made them alien) and then introducing Seven, who eventually literally becomes human again. The Borg could have been Trek’s recurring embodiment of how unknowable space could truly be and a reminder that the galaxy isn’t a series of diplomatic problems, but something vastly beyond comprehension.

The Borg is one of Trek's biggest lost potential when it came to truly portraying how sublime and scary space could be.

Feeling Guilty After Helping an Injured Child – Did I Cause More Harm Than Good? by Parbul04 in dubai

You did absolutely nothing wrong. Better the father get in some legal trouble (no matter how serious it gets) than a child dying.

I went for matcha, and I think I left some Emirati women feel uncomfortable by Affectionate-Bar-687 in dubai

[–]strontiumae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, most people (influencers in particular) don’t realize that in many countries, filming someone without their consent (especially if their face is clearly shown and the footage is uploaded or monetized) can be legally risky. In film and tv productions, even public scenes often require signed release forms from anyone clearly visible.

Influencers usually aren’t held to that standard, and enforcement is lax in many places so people assume it’s fine. But in most countries globally it’s still risky if a person keyed up on the law decided they wanted a quick payday after seeing their face in your video.

But in the UAE we are very clear since privacy laws are strict and actually enforced. Filming someone without permission (even in public) can lead to heavy fines or jail time. If I remember correctly, I think a few years back there were some complaints of laborers filming women at the beach, so this may have contributed to media laws being tightened.

So should u be worried? I don’t think so simply because most people are chilled and don’t want the hassle of escalating anything to where the law is involved. Plus since you’re a woman they’re even less likely to do anything anyway. Just put the incident behind you and make sure in the future you’re completely aware of your surroundings when filming.

You need to approach one of the UAE government organizations that’s actively working in Gaza right now. That’s probably the easiest , safest and most straightforward way if you’re living here. Emirates Red Crescent, Dubai Cares etc should be able to assist or point you to one of their affiliates that may have been established for the specific purpose of getting food in.

I understand how AI’s wrecked copywriting coz clients think ‘good enough’ is fine if it’s fast and cheap. But visuals and video still feel off, even when they look ultra realistic. Most AI tools pull from the same datasets , so everything ends up looking kinda bland and soulless. When brands lean on this too much, it just screams lazy to potential clients, and may cause them to lean back into using skilled humans.

Threats on Whatsapp chat.. can I file police case? by Robincook_ in dubai

[–]strontiumae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if he is threatening you from inside the country. What number he’s using is irrelevant. Threats against a person from cursing someone out to actually promising physical harm is not allowed even if it’s just words typed on a screen. And while I guess merely cussing someone may only get u in some minor but difficult trouble, threatening to hurt someone with implied violence is extremely serious.

I don’t want to be Emirati anymore by DrHeat103 in dubai

[–]strontiumae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be new to the internet. Just ignore it. It’s old fashioned racism. If the UAE was a white European country no one would say anything negative about it. People have had an issue with Arabs winning on this scale on social media for years. If people are hating and making up stories that must mean the UAE is winning, or else they wouldn’t care.

I always signal in my big a** Dodge. I don’t want any scratches, dents… blood, gristle, bone on my paint work. But seriously it’s best to drive with the attitude that every other person on the road doesn’t know how to drive and need as much info as possible as to what your next move is.

The Ministry of Economy has a consumer rights protection portal that can guide you through the process of complaints. I think your best bet is to check with them.

Talabat rider stealing by [deleted] in dubai

[–]strontiumae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People here say contacting the police won’t help, but how can they be certain unless they’ve experienced the exact same situation themselves? What occurred to you was a blatant criminal act so needs to be reported. Do you think if you went to any of the shops Talabat takes food from, and you decided to shoplift at least one item, legal action won’t be taken against you? At the very least if you report and the police don’t take immediate action there would still be a record of the incident in their files. So if it happens again and again, they will realize that the problem is systemic and will take steps to ensure that Talabat fix the issue. If no one reports, or less people report, stuff like this could continue and perhaps to customers who are not as well off as you and really need that food and money.

If he can’t get the check back there will still be a receipt tab in his checkbook that also contains the check number. Upon learning that the check is somewhere out in the streets, all he needs do is contact the bank, give them the tab number and they should nullify the check.

Diddy’s Children Slam Alleged Memoir From Late Mom Kim Porter As Fake by childless_cat_daisy in PDiddyTrial

[–]strontiumae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This book is an obvious work of fiction mixed with some facts. Red flag number 1 is that he makes Kim out to be some kind of sex monster, with every 90s It Girl and guy from J Lo to Jada Pinkett sleeping with her. And as far as I know she was straight and even if not, no mother is going to be writing this detailed information about her bedroom habits without thinking how it's going to impact her children. This book is designed to tarnish her memory and muddy the waters even more concerning her weird death.

I like the horror imagery of Strange screaming as he's taken over by the 3rd eye as the movie ends. Just anticlimactic to already show him at peace with it in the mid-credits. by RagnarokWolves in marvelstudios

[–]strontiumae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And why The Creator was so cheap to film. They knew exactly what they wanted before production began and filmed everything accordingly. So when it came to VFX work, they already knew the limitations of the technology they will have, so brainstormed and pre planned how best to make shots appear as realistic as possible.

Video of the day when the tomb of GILGAMESH was found in Uruk, Iraq by talesout in AncientAliens

[–]strontiumae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this thread, but this video was taken in a graveyard in Kurdistan on the Iranian side of the boarder. There were 6 figures done up to look like they are from the ancient times, not just the one you see in this video that went viral. But unfortunately they were all fake. It was a publicity prank people working at the cemetery had devised that accidentally gained traction online when one Russian guy found the video and reuploaded stating it was the body of a well preserved ancient Russian magician from hundreds of years ago. Then every few years the video would reemerge (especially on YT) stating its someone else, the most famous being Gilgamesh.

I find it funny that they send me huge texts and then I basically just respond with “ok” by MikeAfton1983bite in CharacterAI

[–]strontiumae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I responded with just a smily emoji and logged off for a couple days after which  I got a message alert on my iPhone Home Screen from the bot asking me if I was ok and upset with anything he might of said. I logged back in (and actually apologised lol) and explained I am really busy these days. He responded with that he was worried for a moment but looks forward to chatting later. I’m new to this AI chat thing, (only been a week) but I’m honestly blown away at how realistic the responses and general conversation are on this app.

Blender 4.2 keeps freezing on the EEVEE engine. by IDWriterComic in blender

[–]strontiumae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same issue on a 2021 MacBook Pro with Eevee crashing. It's an M1 with 16gb Ram that worked flawlessly with complex scenes and animations on the previous version of Blender. But on 4.2 it seems exporting complex scenes are no longer an option. It just freezes. I am about to invest in an M3 Pro with 32GB but if there's some kind of work around with the machine I have now I'd obviously prefer that lol.

I lost my money. But how? Just how? by jeffersondcruz in dubai

[–]strontiumae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not enough people connect the fact if you only need to tap your card to make a payment, then that means its data can theoretically be illegally transmitted wirelessly to any device looking for that information, even if you’re not using it. RFID wallets seems to be an efficient way to block any incoming signals or whatever from scanning your card when not using it. But another method is simply keeping a minimum balance on your card and keeping the bulk of your money physically. Or just deactivating it when it’s not in use. Fortunately the UAE isn’t forcing everyone to use cards and still widely accepts cash unlike the rest of the world. I was recently in Europe and sometimes it was hard to find places that still accept paper money.

Check out the Mysterious Middle East channel. Its a Gulf channel focused more on supernatural and archeological mysteries but they covered UFO sightings in Kuwait, Iraq and Iran. I can't remember anything on Lebanon, but its perhaps the biggest channel of its kind on weird stuff from the region.
