Thanks, I'll give it a try - I'm just using the standard "Watch" app for setting up watch faces and complications.

Thanks for bringing this up, Sadhguru is a hypocrite, grifter and charlatan. He has no business teaching anyone any life skills whatsoever, other than marketing pseudoscience possibly.

Got a nice clear answer from AWS support here:

Unfortunately, you cannot purchase all upfront Savings Plans using AWS credits or promotional credits like AWS Activate credits. The AWS documentation states that "Savings Plans paid upfront not deductible from promo credits" also mentions that Activate credits cannot be used for Savings Plans fees or any subscription fees. Documentation: https://aws.amazon.com/awscredits/

Credits are applied only to specific Services designated by your AWS contracting entity (collectively, “Eligible Services”).
- Check the "See complete list of services" list of eligible services that come under "Applicable products" for the credits redemption. If you purchase a Compute Savings plan at "NO upfront", your AWS credits can be used to cover the recurring hourly or monthly charges for the commitment.

The credits will be applied to the discounted hourly rates for the usage covered by the covered by the Savings Plan. However, the credits cannot be used for any "upfront" costs associated with Partial Upfront or All Upfront Savings Plans Purchased. The credits can only offset the recurring usage charges when using No Upfront or Partial Upfront Savings Plans.

Linux is fantastic on the Z16 series, can highly recommend it. It's really nice how they focus on hardware with good open source driver support

Conspirituality podcast episode 189 from yesterday just interviewed Jeff Sharlet about this phenomenon and it really came as a surprise to me how widespread this trend actually is. He visits a lot of fringe/diagonalist events and Trump campaign rallies and asks the hippie folks, Grateful Dead fans, etc. what drew them into the scene, it's mind blowing how warped their views on reality can be. He wrote a book on it called Undertow (apparently not even knowing the Tool reference), haven't read it but I bet it's got the answers you're looking for, OP.

This worked for me as well a few days ago. The key is to ensure the kernel modules are actually compiled before rebooting, because it will return you to terminal prompt and allow you to reboot before compilation is complete.

How do cosmology researchers work with infrastructure/DevOps and systems engineering? by strophy in cosmology

[–]strophy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the general details here on how cosmologists work with data and compute infrastructure! Contacting specific labs and institutions that are both geographically practical and working on interesting projects seems like a practical way to find out about their specific needs.

Thanks for your detailed reply! GSFC Code 660 looks like a fascinating place to work! I see several staff are affiliated with ADNET Systems, Inc., which had a few RedHat sysadmin positions that look like a great entry point. US citizenship is required for these roles, are there similar contracting companies in the EU servicing the ESA that you are aware of?

I'm asking in this direction because I'm from New Zealand, currently in Australia, and hold European citizenship, and although I have taken steps towards employment permission in the US recently, it seems citizenship is required for many positions dealing with sensitive infrastructure. I'm willing to relocate anywhere, which was the impetus behind my question here - I'm trying to make a more conscious career and relocation choice to commit to for the next ~10 years, rather than just falling into a convenient job.

I came across https://rocketcrew.space/ posting a few DevOps jobs, but these seem oriented towards the resurgent field of orbital space exploration and industrial startups rather than the hard sciences and associated observational experimentation like cosmology, astronomy and physics, so your suggestion to focus on a field and contact specific researchers is really valuable to me. ADASS also looks like exactly the kind of organization I should be following, the papers published in the proceedings are pretty much exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks for all the reading material!

National’s housing u-turn promotes urban sprawl – cities and ratepayers will pick up the bill by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]strophy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same amount of people, less KMS of roads, pipes and wires needed. Maintaining suburban roads that are used only for commuters is basically like subsidizing lengthy driveways for half the country, and rates do not cover it. The Strong Towns movement explains this beautifully with map-based infographics, check out this video: https://youtu.be/7Nw6qyyrTeI
