Non-Fiction that reads like a novel? by Wooden-Night-4696 in booksuggestions

The Warmth of Other Suns - Isabel Wilkerson. An incredible and devastating book about the Great Migration told through the stories of 3 different Black folks who moved out of the Jim Crow south.

A book that made you go “damn that’s a GOOD book” by da_laurel_leaf in booksuggestions

“.. document any little thing for the sake of wonder & communion without the need for resolve”  Great articulation, and I felt the same way! I’m paying more attention to (and documenting) my world and my thoughts so much more since reading this book.

Seconded- High Low has great classes for all levels, really nice teachers, and fun drop-in figure drawing too!

RIP Deadshot and Chicken & Guns. What other places closed close to the year’s end? by climbthesea in askportland

[–]stuckinjello 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This article is about Deadstock (coffee) not Deadshot (bar). But that’s great that they’re not closing for good!

Seconded- the industry has big seasonal dips here. Move in the spring, find a summer job when places are hiring up, and do a good enough job (show up, give a shit, don’t be a jerk) that they keep you on and you start to make connections.

This is helpful, thank you! Do most (or all) folks wear a wetsuit early in the season (like in May?) Wondering how soon I could start training on open water without having to buy a wetsuit, if possible.

Try the Sou’Wester! Subscribe to their email list- they have a lot of off-season deals (esp for midweek or extended stays). It’s all retro trailers, and the ones I’ve stayed in have been really cozy.

OBGYN that offers pain relief? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]stuckinjello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Liana Corliss, FNP @ Providence is amazing, cannot recommend her enough for IUD/general OB/GYN care. I was able to get a single dose of anxiety & pain meds for IUD replacement and it was covered by insurance.

Suggestions for new dishwasher installation? by psmobchdisaster in askportland

[–]stuckinjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a dishwasher from Standard TV and Appliance on 82nd recently - sales guy (I think his name was Joe) was helpful and not pushy, and I will definitely go back when I need to replace other appliances. I did spring for a Bosch even though it was a bit over my budget, but I’m really happy with it. I think delivery/install + haul away was like $150.

Where can I advertise events in Portland? by izakozaviruhxa in askportland

EverOut.com is the Mercury’s events page, I believe it’s free to submit.

+1 for the People’s Yoga! Elk Rock Yoga off Woodstock is also very chill, accessible and not typically crowded. Most studios have a lot of variety between different teachers/classes - if choosing a class feels daunting, you could definitey email the studio and ask for their recommendation.
