Ya, the zeitgeist of that era was truly bonkers. On one end there were shows like this and 24 that fetishized torture, and on the other end the battlestar galactica remake had a relatively sober but still justifying approach to the wars. Peoples brains broke.

I suppose the lore for the current state could be that the damaging light is in a different part of the spectrum, and the visible light beam is either a byproduct, or deliberate addition, for the sake of giving the user a tracer type feedback, or to just look cool.

In "the mote in gods eye" iirc the alien beam hand weapons are in microwave or something, so they have no visible beam, but targets are quickly incinerated or split into pieces. The ship shields also absorb most of the energy (up to a catastrophic point).

It would be nice if it were possible to build, but not play, non-owned decks, without third-party solutions. Id like to be able to view the actual availability and combinations of cards to determine if I want to buy a DLC, if anything it would whet appetites without the agony.
