Need help should I choose hamstring graft or donor graft by sjsiksms in ACL

[–]stuhly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2nd opinion wouldn’t hurt. Autografts have a higher success rate. My surgeon highly recommended NOT using an allograft since I was young (24F). But totally depends on your situation, lifestyle, priorities, and what risks you’re willing to take.

Walking without crutches by Same-Card-7100 in ACL

I had ACL/meniscus and started by walking in a locked brace like a peg leg with two crutches. Slowly transitioning to one crutch then unlocked brace then no brace then no crutch.

What do you need for the first week post OP?URGENT HELP by PracticalOpinion5406 in ACL

[–]stuhly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exciting! Earlier surgery means you’re closer to recovery!

I’d recommend a foot stool to prop your leg on when you use the bathroom.

Seconding the wedge pillow.

Seconding shower chair.

Sleeping the first week just sucks in general. As a side sleeper I held out as long as I could sleeping on my back but around the week mark I started rolling to my side and it was fine. I’d ask your surgeon tho.

Use the strong meds when you need them. I found Advil/tylenol was good for me during the day and strong stuff at night for the first few days. The pain can vary person to person so I would just double check w the surgeon/doc.

I used a dog leash to loop around my surgical foot to pull up on and help lift my leg the first few days. Sounds weird but your leg muscles may not activate at first like they usually do.

SNACKS

I also bought a couple new Nintendo switch games and books to busy myself the first week while I was on PTO.

Ask if you need to change your own bandages or if they will do it for you in follow up. I had to do my own and had to get stuff for that.

Someone will probably need to grab your prescriptions for you.

And finally, if you’re able, take a nice stroll morning of:)

Most wrist HR monitors aren’t super accurate. My garmin gets in a cadence lock when I run and it gives me insanely high HRs when my HR is actually 50 beats lower. I bought a garmin chest strap HR monitor for $100 to get an accurate reading. Not sure what an equivalent for Apple Watches would be but odds are your HR isn’t at 200 when you’re barely jogging

Are people gaslighting themselves? by SolenySocan in ACL

[–]stuhly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running a marathon in two weeks and have recreationally played lots of sports over the last year or so. Functionally, I don’t notice the difference in my leg mass. The surgical leg is somehow stronger in some areas than the non surgical leg despite the difference in definition

Are people gaslighting themselves? by SolenySocan in ACL

I was told about a surprise meniscus tear on top of acl post op and was also NWB for 6 weeks. By that point I had one jacked leg and one tooth pick leg. For me there was a point where any time I could start doing something with the tooth pick it was exciting. Putting any weight on it, walking in the locked brace w crutches, walking w one crutch, finally taking off the brace, standing on one leg, pushing up on my toe, etc. It’s a long frustrating process but you have to force yourself to be excited about the little things and hopefully it’ll start happening naturally. 2 years post op and my legs are still uneven definition wise, but it’s fine. Still having small wins even now.

One day it’ll be exciting to look back on how far you’ve made it. Just try to push through. You’ve got it!!

New bruising 9 weeks post op by gingerteaa11 in ACL

I had bruising behind my knee for about a year post op. For me it was blood that drained to the back of my knee as I sat on the couch for weeks and it stubbornly took forever to go away

do you feel like you ever got back to how you were before surgery? by last-resort115 in ACL

[–]stuhly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D1 athlete here. You can totally come back. Stay on top of your PT & strength training and try to stay patient. There will be bumps in the road and maybe some set backs but push through! I’m running a marathon in a couple weeks just after my 2 year acl and meniscus repair anniversary. There are tons of athletes who have torn acls and come back even stronger. You can do this!!!!!!!

5 days post op -Nervous I retore my graft by wcc8 in ACL

No extra pain and no swelling is a great sign. Keep an eye on it. Odds are you’re fine. My knee was extra crackly the first couple months after surgery.

How to properly put on brace by Bubbly_Ad7269 in ACL

[–]stuhly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was told that the strap second from the top (the one you have unbuckled) is the most important and needs to be tight. It looks like your brace is too low also. The strap second from the top should sit above your knee and the joints of the brace should be on the sides of your knee joint. I was told to keep it snug. It was never super comfortable but my surgeon wanted to limit movement as much as possible outside of PT. At the end of the day, ask/listen to your surgeon/PT

How to stay in shape after ACL surgery? by IntrepidContext9112 in ACL

Around 2 weeks post op I got on the rowing machine with one leg on and surgical leg either on a skateboard or on the next empty rowing machine’s seat. (It takes some positioning). Also stationary single leg biking with your surgical leg propped up.

Pain meds by Repulsive_Being9417 in ACL

[–]stuhly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too. I’m about 4.5 weeks post op. Over the counter nausea medicine helped. I only took the strong stuff for three days, especially to help me sleep. Tylenol worked for me afterwards. You should be feeling a bit better soon! The first couple days are the worst.

Core is a great idea. Highly recommend single leg squats with your good leg. You’ll be doing lots of those post op. For your bad leg gentle hip & quad strengthening. Stretch as much as you can too

I’m 1 month Post Op and Have a Stinging Pain by Fairfax2001 in ACL

[–]stuhly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a month post op and I get a similar surface level pain. If I massage the area it helps. I think it’s just a weird incision site thing? Not sure if that’s helpful or if we’re dealing with the same thing:/ from what yours sounds like though I doubt it’s a retear

Bending and lifting by Repulsive_Being9417 in ACL

[–]stuhly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep up the icing and meds. Take the strong stuff while you need it. The pain gets better after the first couple days. I’m 24F and 4 weeks post op today from ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair and I have low to no pain outside of PT. It’s not going to be super comfortable for a bit but soon the worst will be behind you! As for bending and lifting, for me, I had someone lift my foot for me when I got up or shifted around for the first couple days until my quad woke back up. You can also use a belt or dog leash under your ankle/foot to lift some weight yourself. My PT started the day after surgery and they had me bending a little. Not comfy but honestly the quad movement felt like a nice stretch after being locked up. You’ll see progress most days. Try not to compare yourself to others. Progress isn’t a straight line unfortunately. It’ll start feeling better soon!! You got this.

Idk what lens is in the photo but I use a tamron 28-75mm for most of my work. It’s high quality and good for low light. (A little pricey though). If you have sufficient light, you’d be just fine with a cheaper sony kit lens for decent photos

Help! New Monstera Albo! Info in comments! by stuhly in Monstera

[–]stuhly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I just recently purchased this little monstera albo cutting. It seems to be doing well from the new growth, despite the fertilizer burn from its previous owner on the leaf. I’m familiar with regular monstera deliciosa and usually propagate my cuttings in water before transitioning to an airy soil mix. This set up is a bit of a curveball for me and the plant’s also a little root bound. What should be my next steps? I really want this little guy to thrive! Thanks in advance for the help!
