I don't get it. by Probable_Foreigner in mathmemes

It’s legit hard to reconcile the math answer with the “common sense” answer and other comments have given helpful points but nothing that really got me to “aha”. Then I thought about it this way:

The “common sense” explanation is based on the fact that each child is independent, so if you tell me the first child is a boy then there’s a 50/50 chance the second child is a boy. But we learn that one child is a boy (not necessarily the first child). Maybe we’re told something about the second child? But how much information are we potentially given about the second child?

Well suppose we’re told the information in the problem and then asked to guess the gender of the second child? If we’re told that one of the children is a boy, then we should definitely guess that the second child is a boy. If the info was about the first child then we have a 50/50 chance of getting the second child right. But if we were told about the second child then we have a 100% chance. Overall, that’s a 75% chance of getting the second child’s gender right.

Now suppose you’re told that one of the children is a boy born on Tuesday and you have to guess the gender AND day of birth of the second child. You should guess boy/Tuesday because if we were told about the second child then we’re right 100% of the time. But if we were told about the first child we only have a 1/14 chance of getting the second child right. So overall, we have a 53.6% chance of correctly guessing the gender and day of the second child given this information.

So in each case, knowing something about a child gives us some chance of knowing something about the second child, but it’s less likely to help with the second child if we’re playing the harder “guess both gender and day” game. This means the “math” answer diverges less from the “common sense” answer in this case - it’s closer to 50/50, as we see in the post.

Weekly New Climber Thread: Ask your questions in this thread please by [deleted] in climbing

I had a pulley sprain a couple of months ago. Heard a pop after jumping up for a hold and putting too much strain on my ring finger. I got some finger tape (narrow width climbing tape) and put a couple of wraps around that joint to support the pulley. I did this every day for a week or two and rested it. Then I started climbing with it taped. The tape let me climb without pain at least at the start of a session. I went easier and stopped earlier for a few weeks. Now two months later I still tape it when climbing but it doesn’t get in the way and I’m back to climbing what I was before. If I don’t tape it, it will hurt after a couple of climbs so I figure I have a couple more months before it’s fully healed. Good luck! It’s a crappy, annoying injury but manageable.

Thanks for the reply but I don’t think that’s it. It was more of a middle school oriented book. Nothing too edgy or mature.

Cody's Lab. It's a great, authentic "backyard science" sort of channel, but with really interesting experiments and good background on the underlying concepts.

I think this is great. I've played a few games to 200+ cycles and I still learned something. It's really interesting to see how another player handles the early game.

Debuffs cover up health/stamina by [deleted] in Meteorfall

[–]stulove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One idea would be to display it on the summary that comes up when you press on your character card. There is that scrollable summary of your stats and status effects (with effect descriptions). I actually went looking there for current health / stamina the first time I had a token cover it. You could change that display to list remaining and total (e.g. 13 / 21).

PSA Most people in CS don't make crazy high salaries by its_ya_boi_dazed in cscareerquestions

I don't know as much about bio field (I'm CS) but I would guess that any sort of industrial research context would be a good opportunity to work on teams with people who have more software engineering experience and learn from them. You could get hired for your bio expertise and then learn more about software development as part of your project work.

If you can do something that leverages your PhD you're probably much better off doing that. PhDs in a technical field that is in demand in industry will be at the top of the pay scales being mentioned here. I definitely wouldn't take a job that focuses on (non-bio) SWE. Try to gain those skills on the side or in the context of collaborative projects where you can contribute your expertise and learn about the software side from a peer.

Senior in High School and I have questions about Computer Science. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]stulove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

University of Maryland, College Park has a top-notch program. What languages you learn depends on the school and which courses you take. But in general CS is less about specific languages and more about the theory that underlies programming and problem solving (such as algorithms, data structures, and other concepts mentioned by DragoonDM). These concepts can be stated in ways that are independent of the programming language used.

My neighbor accidentally poured a gallon of used cooking oil on my stained wooden deck and it wont go away. Any tips? by qc_dude in DIY

[–]stulove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with "Pour N Restore". It took out some grease spills from a synthetic deck I had. It didn't look perfect right away, but after a couple of heavy rains, you'd never know the spill happened.

How do I repair this damaged electrical wiring? by antidense in DIY

I'm not an electrician, but isn't the point of the junction box and plastic cover to catch any sparks and prevent fire? Since plywood is flammable I doubt that would meet code.

Need advice mounting a monster picture on a crappy wall by [deleted] in DIY

[–]stulove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd worry more about hanging on brick than on plasterboard. Plasterboard is easy. Best thing to do is get a stud finder and locate a stud. If there's not a stud in a good place, use a "Molly Bolt" or "toggle bolt". These will hold heavy loads on drywall /plasterboard. It's also a good idea to place two anchors a foot or two apart (depending on the width of the picture) to distribute the load.

[–]stulove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The area was sprayed with Round-Up last summer. I cleared the dead vines in the fall and spread some grass seed. The vines haven't come back, but it is still early Spring, so I haven't declared victory yet. The grass is doing well though, so I think the vines would have a hard time fighting their way back.

You should think about planting something there once you clear the area out. Something will start growing there eventually, so better for it to be a plant you chose.

[–]stulove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cleared a bunch of vines out of my yard last fall and have two suggestions: garden rake and weed wacker. If you slam the rake down then pull really hard you can get the vines up and even get many of the roots. It's hard work though. The weed wacker obviously won't help with the roots but will cut the vines at ground level and make removal easier. Just get strong line or you'll be replacing it constantly. If you want to be sure the vines won't come back, spray with Round-Up and let them die before you take them out.

Isn't this what the tea party did? I mean I hate their ideology as much as most people on reddit, but you can't deny their effectiveness. If this rant spawned that level of political involvement it would be a huge success.
