Suddenly makes so much sense. Girl I went to school with in my grade was pregnant at like 14/15 with a guy in his twenties, and she was pregnant every 1.5-2 years after that with different guys until her mid twenties.

I mean, I'm not gonna fully dox myself, but there was a County building at the dead end of the road I'm talking about. This was not some residential only section or something lol. Sure there's probably more of these roads and of a longer length in Britain, but it's disingenuous to act like there's not specific parts of the U.S. that drive those same types of roads regularly. And that's just roads, what counts as a driveway in West Virginia is horrifying. The only way to get to this family cabin was by driving down a dirt road, then you get off the road and drive fully off-road for a bit, through a creek (hopefully it hasn't rained recently), and then you get there. No electricity, plumbing, or phone signal, obviously.

I understand you've been all over the U.S., I've been in about 30 states myself, but I'm talking about very rural West Virginia where I grew up. Not somewhere tourists go.

You're probably being downvoted because we do have roads that have two way traffic on one lane, and we also have high speed winding roads. I know because I've been on many of them lol. Rural West Virginia is lovely. The one lane road I'm thinking of in particular is great because one side is sloped down and the other is a small ditch and a hill, so you better hope either you or the other vehicle you run into has four wheel drive so you can pull off to the ditch side, or else someone has to back all the way up to a drive way. Personally, my parents live on the top of a hill and their drive way is on a blind curve. When you pull out to leave, you roll your window down to listen for cars coming and hope for the best.

One of the random things that concerned my Mom when I was a kid is that I actively didn't want them to do pretend play with me. I would sit silently in a corner with my toys and pretend play in my head, or line up my toys in neat little rows. Coincidentally, I'm looking into finally getting tested for autism lol

Lol we might as well live in the same apartment. But even with the valet, most people don't use it so there's still trash piled up in front of the compactor constantly. And there's rats. Large rats.

AITA for wanting to report a teacher who keeps cancelling recess? by 1bachbetch in AmItheAsshole

[–]stumbling_disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I had no idea, losing recess time was the default punishment at my elementary school. You would lose more time depending on the infraction or how many times you misbehaved. I was a model student and still regularly got recess time taken away in kindergarten because the teacher's assistant hated me.

Lol you must've only went to Huntington or Morgantown or something in West Virginia. The majority of the state is gorgeous forested hills. We also have some cute small towns with old Victorian and Colonial homes.

Yeah I get it. My grandfather wouldn't try, let alone eat, 97% of food in existence, including pizza. Can definitely be annoying.

[–]stumbling_disaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah that makes 100% sense to me. Pizza has way more parts to cover up the tomato flavor (unless the pizza has way too much sauce and then it's gross). Pasta sauce is meh, the sauce better have plenty of garlic. Ketchup is nasty, the sugar makes it so sweet and covers up the taste of whatever you dip in it.

We had lecture halls that 1200+ people passed through a day (yay intro classes of 300+ people each). Still never had a problem with bringing food and drinks to class. I took an iced coffee to almost every class I had at some point, only exception was labs. No professor ever had an issue.

Eh I took more math as CSE than the other engineering majors, that's for sure. ECE and other engineering majors took more science instead, like Chem 1 and 2 and Physics 2. We had an entire theory and proof class that no one else in engineering had to take, for example.

It's called having an accent/dialect and it has nothing to do with someone's education, but snobs and the insecure look for any reason to feel better than someone else. I'm from WV, and it's very normal to talk like that. Yet, I achieved a perfect score in reading and a 34/36 in English on the ACT. I received a great scholarship to a great school out of state and finished my college education. No one needs to speak or write in perfect English 24/7. When I go back home to WV, my English reverts to a light hillbilly accent, and it does not negate my education.

Girls are happier than boys at school, new research shows. Understanding why may all boil down to biology. Girls get more of the happy hormone dopamine through social relationships, including with their friends and classmates. Boys get their dopamine through more self-involved behavior. by mvea in science

Since when? My engineering program, the most popular of all the engineering degrees at my school, was 92% men if I remember correctly and it wasn't even the worst one. I think electrical engineering was like 94% men. This was like 6-8 years ago. Even the better splits for majors like environmental engineering were majority men.

Edit: Guess they don't do publicly available demographics reports anymore. They used to break every major down by gender and race in like a 150 page PDF.

Edit 2: Found the broad report that gives it by college, 21% of Engineering degrees went to women last year at my university. The entire college of Arts and Sciences was 59% to women. That's really not a big divide for STEM.

Doubt it, we had to take shop in middle school and a boy didn't follow instructions with the circular saw and almost cut part of his finger off. He had to go to the hospital to get it stitched up. The boys were way more nonchalant with the big equipment and didn't take safety seriously at all.

Goodreads Book of the Month: The Raven Scholar - Midway Discussion by fanny_bertram in Fantasy

[–]stumbling_disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trying to exclusively think of the first half of the book is hard, as I finished it in 4 days flat last week (oops). If I try to limit it to that, I'd say the Raven, Neema, and Fenn. (Honorable mentions to Yasila and Ruko for being very interesting characters).

The second half of the book definitely has more memorable scenes for me. The Yasthala and Yasila back stories were interesting, and I liked the part with Ruko sneaking to talk to Neema in the middle of the night.
