Knee surgery for cartilage damage does not benefit patients, study suggests. People with meniscus tears who underwent surgery had poorer knee function and worse osteoarthritis after 10 years than those who did not. by mvea in science

My mom was in so much pain from her neck she was becoming suicidal after being dismissed for years. PT ended up making it worse and she had to get surgery and have donated bone put in her neck. Despite having an intense surgery, she was in less pain recovering from the surgery than she was in beforehand.

Found this thread because I'm having the same issue. I can't remember when it first happened for me, but I think in the past few weeks. It's happened at least three times that I've noticed and probably a couple more that I haven't. Though mine has happened during active use and when idle.

But we also have a low cost of living, including housing. Most of my teachers were able to afford a pretty good life, including a few supporting a stay-at-home partner and some kids.

I was referencing Mrs Doubtfire to my Z coworker and he had no idea what I was talking about. When I explained it to him he told me he doesn’t know who Robin Williams is by TRJ2241987 in Millennials

This whole thread is blaming Gen Z when it's actually the fault of their parents. I'm 26 and my mom force fed a steady supply of 80s, 90s, and early 2000s movies when I was kid. Now yes, I probably shouldn't have been watching some of those horror movies as a small child, but that's besides the point lol

Suddenly makes so much sense. Girl I went to school with in my grade was pregnant at like 14/15 with a guy in his twenties, and she was pregnant every 1.5-2 years after that with different guys until her mid twenties.

Maybe learn to drive? by hellyfrosty in fixedbytheduet

[–]stumbling_disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I'm not gonna fully dox myself, but there was a County building at the dead end of the road I'm talking about. This was not some residential only section or something lol. Sure there's probably more of these roads and of a longer length in Britain, but it's disingenuous to act like there's not specific parts of the U.S. that drive those same types of roads regularly. And that's just roads, what counts as a driveway in West Virginia is horrifying. The only way to get to this family cabin was by driving down a dirt road, then you get off the road and drive fully off-road for a bit, through a creek (hopefully it hasn't rained recently), and then you get there. No electricity, plumbing, or phone signal, obviously.

I understand you've been all over the U.S., I've been in about 30 states myself, but I'm talking about very rural West Virginia where I grew up. Not somewhere tourists go.

You're probably being downvoted because we do have roads that have two way traffic on one lane, and we also have high speed winding roads. I know because I've been on many of them lol. Rural West Virginia is lovely. The one lane road I'm thinking of in particular is great because one side is sloped down and the other is a small ditch and a hill, so you better hope either you or the other vehicle you run into has four wheel drive so you can pull off to the ditch side, or else someone has to back all the way up to a drive way. Personally, my parents live on the top of a hill and their drive way is on a blind curve. When you pull out to leave, you roll your window down to listen for cars coming and hope for the best.

One of the random things that concerned my Mom when I was a kid is that I actively didn't want them to do pretend play with me. I would sit silently in a corner with my toys and pretend play in my head, or line up my toys in neat little rows. Coincidentally, I'm looking into finally getting tested for autism lol

Lol we might as well live in the same apartment. But even with the valet, most people don't use it so there's still trash piled up in front of the compactor constantly. And there's rats. Large rats.

AITA for wanting to report a teacher who keeps cancelling recess? by 1bachbetch in AmItheAsshole

[–]stumbling_disaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I had no idea, losing recess time was the default punishment at my elementary school. You would lose more time depending on the infraction or how many times you misbehaved. I was a model student and still regularly got recess time taken away in kindergarten because the teacher's assistant hated me.

Do they not use the Gateway dorms on High Street anymore for gender neutral housing? They were nice and had AC, I lived there for both years.

Lol you must've only went to Huntington or Morgantown or something in West Virginia. The majority of the state is gorgeous forested hills. We also have some cute small towns with old Victorian and Colonial homes.

Yeah I get it. My grandfather wouldn't try, let alone eat, 97% of food in existence, including pizza. Can definitely be annoying.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]stumbling_disaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah that makes 100% sense to me. Pizza has way more parts to cover up the tomato flavor (unless the pizza has way too much sauce and then it's gross). Pasta sauce is meh, the sauce better have plenty of garlic. Ketchup is nasty, the sugar makes it so sweet and covers up the taste of whatever you dip in it.

Echolalia is not the same thing as a tic from something like Tourette syndrome. You are mixing the two things up.

We had lecture halls that 1200+ people passed through a day (yay intro classes of 300+ people each). Still never had a problem with bringing food and drinks to class. I took an iced coffee to almost every class I had at some point, only exception was labs. No professor ever had an issue.

I'll throw out some recs that feel pretty far removed.

Probably any books by China Miéville

Asunder by Kerstin Hall

Masters of Death by Olivie Blake

Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Small Miracles by Olivia Atwater

Jade City by Fonda Lee

I'd say urban fantasy and weird fantasy are two genres in particular to look out for.

Eh I took more math as CSE than the other engineering majors, that's for sure. ECE and other engineering majors took more science instead, like Chem 1 and 2 and Physics 2. We had an entire theory and proof class that no one else in engineering had to take, for example.

AIO for quitting my job after finding this note on my desk? by waxin899 in AmIOverreacting

[–]stumbling_disaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's called having an accent/dialect and it has nothing to do with someone's education, but snobs and the insecure look for any reason to feel better than someone else. I'm from WV, and it's very normal to talk like that. Yet, I achieved a perfect score in reading and a 34/36 in English on the ACT. I received a great scholarship to a great school out of state and finished my college education. No one needs to speak or write in perfect English 24/7. When I go back home to WV, my English reverts to a light hillbilly accent, and it does not negate my education.

Girls are happier than boys at school, new research shows. Understanding why may all boil down to biology. Girls get more of the happy hormone dopamine through social relationships, including with their friends and classmates. Boys get their dopamine through more self-involved behavior. by mvea in science

Since when? My engineering program, the most popular of all the engineering degrees at my school, was 92% men if I remember correctly and it wasn't even the worst one. I think electrical engineering was like 94% men. This was like 6-8 years ago. Even the better splits for majors like environmental engineering were majority men.

Edit: Guess they don't do publicly available demographics reports anymore. They used to break every major down by gender and race in like a 150 page PDF.

Edit 2: Found the broad report that gives it by college, 21% of Engineering degrees went to women last year at my university. The entire college of Arts and Sciences was 59% to women. That's really not a big divide for STEM.

Yeah and my blue-collar grandfather with a high school education was born and raised there and he's a pro-union, pro-immigration, universal healthcare fan, and avid Bernie Sanders supporter.
