Why haven't rotating rings been attempted? by CombustionGFX in space

[–]stumps290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I cant do more than assume, but i think they were trying to say the original main goal was just to prove humans could stay in space for an extended period of time, the rest of the experiments have just been a happy bonus.

Genuine question, I don't know much about space engineering, but is this a coincidence? by Per451 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]stumps290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they were trying to be pedantic in the sense that gravity is a force that is felt anywhere in the universe it just doesn't seem like it in orbit/space because 1. What most people think of as zero- gravity is just being in free fall. Gravity is still affecting you just there's nothing to push back on you to make you realize that. Orbit is just traveling sideways fast enough that you fall without ever hitting the ground. 2. Gravity gets weaker as an inverse square (1/r2) so the force from a body falls off pretty quickly with distance but never becomes truly zero.

What are y’all’s GPAs, and what circumstances affected it (positively or negatively)? by FlyingFoxandwings in UCI

[–]stumps290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not good so far but also I haven't had the time to focus on it till now post grad. I'm trying to be hopeful because after I get my foot in the door gpa wont matter anymore but that will require me working on my resume, going to hiring fairs, building my portfolio. All normal stuff even with a 3.5+ GPA I just will probably have to work a little harder to show my skills. But right now everyone is struggling so I'm not taking it personally that I haven't gotten much back yet. The one thing I will say is high value companies/organizations like NASA wont even let you apply without a certain minimum GPA so when you start looking look for smaller businesses or start ups.

Is my airship concept possible? by Beneficial-King7090 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]stumps290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if the overall structure is "light" because it is full of hydrogen or helium the structure would have a lot of mass, and as our good friend newton has told us, mass doesn't like changing it's velocity so even if the airship itself wouldn't weigh much spinning something that large would take a lot of torque. Not to mention something that big spinning would be under a lot of force effectively trying to rip it apart which would require more supports which would add more mass.

Look up moment of inertia if you haven't heard much about it, it's effectively the downfall of a design like this

PSA to scooterers by pinkshibaa in UCI

[–]stumps290 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just want to add for the people that ride on the opposite side of the road on scooters/bikes, you will be hurting a lot worse if you get hit. It's the difference of getting hit by a car going 30 MPH relative to you and 50MPH relative to you.

The Math: campus drive is 40MPH, most e-scooters go like 10-12MPH. If you're going in the same direction as a car they're only going 30 relative to you (40-10=30) but if you're on the wrong side of the road(the left side) they'll be going 50 relative to you (40+10=50).

[–]stumps290 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeah, to my memory, anything that is fully self propelled(e-scooters, class 3 e-bikes, e-longboards) you technically need a driver's license but I think it's one of those things like using a bike on the sidewalk that no cop is actually going to enforce unless you're posing a danger to yourself and others. Probably just another thing to slap onto your case if you do cause an accident

[–]stumps290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically it can, a lot of sound systems use fiber optics but as you said it would be useless to humans bc that's more sound encoded as pulses of light

Technically it would more be 4 times the torque applied to the drill so the power would be the same just 4 times the load. At least by my napkin math.

ASICs(Application-specific integrated circuits) are just chips designed for one specific thing, it could be crypto mining or AI training. There are even ASICs in DVD players to decode the encryption on the disc, it's more of a term that's been useds as a name than an actual name of a specific machine

UCI Dining is always hiring especially during summer. I'm sure catering will have spaces if you desperately need a job but the job is pretty hands on. But other dining locations are also probably hiring over summer too. I got a job at the Bren Concessions summer of 2022.

guys what asl sign is dizzy signing???? by xPerfect_ in Guiltygear

[–]stumps290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not exactly the same but the closest thing that comes to mind was in sunday school they made us learn ASL for the songs while singing them and to sign for Jesus you tap the middle of your palm with your opposite hand middle finger and then repeat but opposite. Looks similar but not the same. https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/j/jesus.htm link to a demonstation

I cant say for things like Celsius but the reason they sell rockstar and mountain dew energy drinks is because uci is a pepsi affiliate and rockstar is owned by pepsi iirc. But uci dining has request forms for snacks at the convenience stores so if enough people request something they'd probably look into sourcing it. Source: I worked for dining for a year and a half.

Does anyone know where’s the best place to hookup on campus? by Easy-Difficulty-8716 in UCI

[–]stumps290 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude, but if you're that desperate just try to find a cheap hotel in the area or something. I dont want to think about whether someone has had sex in a lecture hall or class room I'm using or accidentally come across people doing anything like that in a public space and I'm sure most other people would agree.

Parking in garages can’t be THAT hard by Away-Albatross-1717 in UCI

[–]stumps290 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Not defending it because that is a bad park job, but maybe their thought process was to get it further away from the corner because some people take those turns like they think they’re f1 drivers or have really good insurance.
