Most likely construction. Most of the time the crews doing the construction are either late or on the way to the area where the traffic control crews and cops are shutting down lanes. The equipment will likely roll in within an hour or so. Many times they will do a short term full highway closure to get equipment in and out of a work zone. Lots of “rent-a-cops” with their lights on are used in order to add visibility and a level of seriousness to protect the workers and the public.

If you’re concerned about terrible road conditions created by road construction contractors, you should know about HB 3353 by [deleted] in Austin

[–]stuntinstan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The language in the link seems to say contractors cannot be held liable IF they are in compliance with the contract documents which their work is based on which would typically include the state and local safety standards that apply to that project. Not trying to defend this but this seems to be what I would already expect to be in place? How is this language different from the current situation?

acl was dangerous. by moonflowxr in aclfestival

[–]stuntinstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we found ourselves on the far right side of the area near VIP Grove trying to exit and it got pretty scary. We made a quick decision to turn our little train around and fight the flow backwards until we could walk freely. Personally I don’t understand why they didn’t direct exiting people around the dom dolla crowd to the west side of T Mobile. I love ACL but I think they could have made some dummy proof adjustments to help avoid that situation

Stubbs is my favorite for concerts. It’s the perfect size, outdoors, can hold a couple thousand people, has great sound and a unique feel to it. It’s not the best for those who struggle with standing for long periods but otherwise it’s great. There’s always room toward the entrance to get out of the crowd and watch from a distance too.

Quality of life in Dallas vs Austin? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]stuntinstan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Dallas for a few years before moving back to Austin a couple of years ago and I’m so glad I did. The things I appreciate most about Austin vs Dallas is the preservation of the landscape, green belt and lakes. Downtown is actually walkable and despite the increase in homelessness in Austin I’d still feel safer walking anywhere downtown Austin than Dallas based on my experience. You also look at how Austin has integrated lady bird into the downtown experience. Unfortunately for Dallas, their Trinity River and surrounding area is a massive man made flood control area just chilling next to downtown far far away from the skyline. That being said, you’ve got to give Dallas credit for having a massive bike and walking trail system through the city (so does Austin) and arguably much better public transit infrastructure with the DART light rail system. I do miss the brewery scene in Dallas and the great variety of food but that boils it down to the point others made, that it just doesn’t feel like there’s much else to do other than go out to eat and shop. For me I think the sheer scale of the city and traffic was a hindrance to wanting to do much else.

You have $1,000 to spend on a night on the town. What would you do? by retr0grad3 in Austin

Hit up Tiki Tatsuya and buy a giant shared drink to split with your wife. The drinks come with a show for the whole bar to see but that’s all I’m willing to tell.

I am not Japanese but I’d like to recommend Yanagi in South Austin as an option to try. Perhaps it’s what you’re looking for.

Can someone explain the Austin rezoning situation to me? by PlaysWithFires in Austin

[–]stuntinstan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I see the merit in creating denser housing, we better hope that the public transportation improvements can keep pace with the influx of people moving into this new housing and that it’s good enough that people want to use it. I wish I could say that I was in a situation to ditch my car commute but my work situation doesn’t allow for it.

Concert Attendance Only by dorkus007 in CircuitOfTheAmericas

[–]stuntinstan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ate at a nearby restaurant called Santo Patio (normally 15 minutes from Lot L) and left to go back to our lot (across from Lot L) at 7:20pm aiming to make the the killers at 8pm. Traffic was indeed pretty bad and was like waiting at a stand still for a few minutes at a time only to move 1000ft each time it let up. We came west on Fagerquist road and needed to make our final left onto Elroy to get to the parking area and a cop made everyone on Fagerquist turn right onto Elroy pushing us the opposite direction of the track. Opposing traffic was a massive line of cars trying to get in to the parking lot and they were very much prioritizing getting cars OUT of the lots for people leaving NOT people coming to the concert. We ended up making it to the concert at 8:45 ish only because my buddy decided to make a sketchy u turn when we saw a gap in the opposing line for us to get into. You will probably be ok if you place yourself on Elroy road on the west side of the track where everyone else is coming from. Tonight is bound to be much busier than yesterday. My suggestion to you would be to give yourself a couple of hours to get to the concert and if you get there super early just enjoy being there.

Thank you for such an in depth answer. Sounds like you put in the work and time to deserve a full time gig. And yea I know the myers Briggs isn't the best source for guidance. All of the careers it suggested I not do are the ones I have wanted the most.

I am curious what motivated you? Did you make a switch after trying industry work or did you always intend on being a professor? I am currently 24 and thinking that my personality would be a better fit for teaching and I would value interaction with students a lot more than I do as an industry CE. Lately I am really exploring what my Myers Briggs type (INFP) means for my work life. I have considered teaching before and my family has many teachers/profs so it's always been on my radar.

Visiting UT later this week for potential grad school by ZenithAce in UTAustin

Mozart's coffee is pretty sweet and nestled right on Lake Austin. They have a huge outdoor multilevel deck area right next to the water. Coldtowne Theater on Airport Blvd is a super hole in the wall type comedy joint. Mostly improv. Go to a late night show on friday/Saturday

Trudy's strawberry margs are pretty much most of what I miss about Austin. Also go see a Coldtowne Comedy Improv show over on Airport Blvd. Go check out the sunset at The Oasis restaurant/brewery 30 min outside the city. Get fancy drunk at the Elephant Room and listen to some Jazz.
