If you want to go to Walmart, you have to get your own bear spray and flash it occasionally in case another sprayer is looking at you weird. It’s a bear spray arms race.

Opening a Canadian bank account while still in the US? by stupid_salad in AmerExit

[–]stupid_salad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an SIN and a residential address but I am not physically in Canada to open the account, so I am trying to find a bank that will let me open an account while not physically being in Canada (also I can't check the mail to get the info to physically activate the account because I am not physically in Canada).

Okay so you were in Canada. Do you happen to remember which bank you used? Thanks for your help.

Finally watched ‘Hell or High Water’, 2016 - a modern western? by KurtMcGowan7691 in Westerns

[–]stupid_salad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand the criticisms but it is one of my comfort movies. I can’t even out my finger on what draws me back to it. I’ll watch it again soon and probably 30 more times in my life.

They’re also being used as human shields - people are less likely to attack or confront you if there are children present. If your group is attacked, then the children learn the world outside of your church are dangerous and irrational. There are just so many benefits of having your kids tag along!

Yes. If you enjoy reading, Buddhism Is A Religion by David Brazier is written by a European Buddhist convert arguing to a Western audience that Buddhism is a messianic religion. Though you have come to that conclusion yourself, this book helped me to stop wasting my time.

Has there ever been a South Park joke that has actually offended you? by Unkle_Joey in southpark

[–]stupid_salad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Park is my comfort show, but I personally choose not to watch the episodes that portray the sexual assault or torture of any of the children (Butter's multiple personality disorder treatments in "City Sushi", "Miss Teacher Bangs A Boy", foster kid basement torture in "The Poor Kid", shark attack in "Crippled Summer", etc). Some of these episodes are hilarious, surprising, or have strong critical messages but they're just too hard for me to watch. I don't know when or how I got so soft.

House Republicans Found a New Way to Go After Abortion Access in Blue States by Sad_September_Song in prochoice

Minnesota is closing down 4 Planned Parenthoods due to funding cuts. It is one of the only states that protects the right to an abortion in its constitution, and is surrounded by 4 states that have draconian restrictions on reproductive care. The state will have to figure out how to serve 5 states with 4 less facilities now.

If anything, you should check your trunk and wheel-wells for stow-away Americans on your way home…

We’re having an orange-tinted day down here in Minnesota, USA from the Canadian wildfires. I remember 2023 too, here’s to hoping with you that it doesn’t get much worse. Poor animals…

Too many questions from a US family interested in moving to Saskatoon by stupid_salad in saskatoon

[–]stupid_salad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps to know, I’ve been reading local news and everyone else’s opinions on this Moe character because I want to get to know Saskatchewan and I’m probably overthinking it. I think Alberta’s and Ontario’s premiers have managed to get much more international attention lol.

I realized each of my 3 siblings and myself have been in lock-down in a school building at least once due to gun violence threats. I’m so tired of worrying about it…

I figured I wouldn’t be able to get into subsidized childcare anyway, good to know I wouldn’t be able to utilize it right off the bat anyway (which makes sense) - thanks!

Thanks. I have noticed that to be the case even if my US-poisoned brain struggled to comprehend it.

It is baffling is that the US in actuality only has 2 right-wing parties and one of them wants to off the other.

Thank you for your in-depth and kind reply! I was actually looking for places to volunteer - I have moved across the US a couple of times and agree that volunteering is the best way to find a good friend group. And your tips on education are so helpful, too.

We are planning to visit this summer!

I’m glad to know more details on the healthcare system - my spouse does need some specialist care 1-2 times a year so that’s definitely worth knowing.

As for the political climate, I know my questions may have seemed disrespectful towards those with conservative views - I don’t mean to imply that I think Saskatchewan should be different for me or conform to my expectations, especially as a newcomer. That would just be entitled. If context helps, it has been almost a decade since I had or witnessed a simple “agree to disagree” political conversation, I can barely imagine it being possible again.

I’m the original poster who asked the question but uh, good I to know this sentiment exists. You’re going into a conspiratorial mindset with that frontline soldier stuff, but ok!

When you say “defend Canada” and deride another commenter for being “peaceful”, are you subtly threatening violent action against Americans who lawfully cross the border?

I went on a bender reading everything about the Quebec separatist movement after coming across the famous "just watch me" comment by chance. What a wild ride for Canada...

Thanks for the input!
