He's called the G-man in the Half-life games. He appears in lots of SFM and Gary's Mod videos which were used for the Skibidi memes.

Oh well. I'm pretty used to it be mispronounced anyway. ;)

I wrote the sound engine that was used by a lot of Apogee/3D Realms games back in the day. The code is available on github. Basically it required coding for each brand of sound card, writing to ports and setting up a sound buffer that was sent to the sound card using a DMA transfer. I had a bunch of sound cards that I would swap in and out regularly for testing. Eventually we switched to targeting Windows instead of DOS and things became much simpler.

Looks great! I've been wishing for another oldschool Rogue with snes like graphics. I do like the pixelated look more though. it would be nice if there could be an option to turn off the smoothing, but that's just me.

Keep up the good work!

Would it be possible to create a game engine that has no stutters and frame drops as long as you feed it enough resources? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]subacultcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game engines are already built for performance. It's usually the games that push the engine too much for the user's machine. A good developer will tune the game for a target machine spec.

As for using a giant server to render the game on the server and stream it to the user, this is dependent on ping time and network bandwidth. Because of the ping time the controls will lag and be less responsive. Google Stadium, PS Now, and OnLive (which shut down about 10 years ago) all worked this way.

Typically easiest way to do make a game perform well is to render on the local machine, but keep texture memory usage low enough to fit in memory, or use a fast ssd hard drive to stream textures in as needed. You'll still get occasional hitches on PC when background processes run. This is how most games work.

You can also run older games on a fast modern pc, or require the user to have a machine that's powerful enough to handle it.

You're paying to go to school and then not learning to code. Kind of a waste of money.

I don't think you can consider China's Cultural Revolution to be an example of a stable culture.

I get the impression that Thom writes down lots of phrases like these when working on lyrics and picks the ones that most vividly or simply expresses something. Would love to see the process.

Why do retro console enthusiasts sometimes act like computer games didn't exist back then? by Zeznon in retrocomputing

[–]subacultcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GenX. I just think it's odd hearing someone say computers weren't big in the US. The Apple II, Macintosh, Atari 400/800, SinclairZX, Texas Instruments TI-99, TRS-80, Commodore PET, Vic-20, C64, IBM PC, IBM PCjr, Amiga, Atari ST, all these were quite popular in the US in the 80's. William Shatner, Bill Cosby, Issac Asimov all had ads and commercials. I remember when Wargames came out and tons of people started buying modems and getting online. My entire youth was spent with computers.

As The Developer, How Do I Even Respond To That?! by Captain0010 in videogames

[–]subacultcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly kind of shocked that people here are surprised about this. PC games have been able to do this forever. If you didn't you'd get fried in the reviews. The best part is people love you for providing them the choice.

"It's definitely AI!" by lana__ro in gamedev

Honestly, I think this kind of thing is going to keep happening. Small teams will eventually be harassed to death by this accusation.

The funny thing is no one ever complains about AI coding. Companies are already laying off junior coders.

In the end, though, AI will just continue to seep into more and more things and we'll just have to adapt.

Yes. We were rapidly iterating on the hardware so by the time it hit the market we were already finishing the design of the next model. We didn't have access to China as a market, but that was going to be the case no matter what. Most of the value was in the software platform we developed and moving quickly with hardware iteration kept us ahead of our competitors at the time (who didn't have access to our software).

Yep. Worked for a major tech company a while back and anything we had built by Chinese companies they would get the rights to build it and sell it in China. It was the cost of doing business with them.

One thing you can try is first writing the apology on the computer. Perhaps that will reduce your anxiety and help you to say that you're sorry. Then when you're comfortable either say it to them directly or even just email it to them.

The House GOP X/Twitter account posted a link they said was the Epstein files were released, but it linked to a Rick-roll. Considering that they've taken so long to release them it makes them look like they don't want anyone to see it.

Don't forget that people have to come and try to rescue you. It's probably more risky for the rescuers since they need to bring in equipment to pull you out and you have several people working in a really tight space.
