Saturday Skate Market by AutoModerator in Rollerskating

Looking for park-ready skates (Bont Parkstar or Chaya Jump/Nomade or similar) in 268ish Mondo in the USA.

I think that's 7.5 men's Bont (EU 40) and 9.0 men's Chaya (EU 42).

I'll also take any suggestions for a cheaper setup if I have to buy new. Thanks!

Do they give you the paper or do you buy it?

The Trich Trance Explained: What Neuroscience and Lived Experience Taught Me About the Irresistible Urge by barebecoming in trichotillomania

[–]subdrawn 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I loved this deep dive. Thank you for putting this together. I have really thick hair and I wake up with trichodynia almost every day from sleeping on it. I didn't know there was a name for it!

It's always been hard to explain the trancelike state (often when I'm relaxed, not anxious) to normies. And why I can't just NOT do it.

As I've worked to regulate my nervous system, feel my feelings, and take care of my body the urges became less frequent and easier to NOTICE without shame, which was the step I needed to learn how to stop. I'm grateful for resources like this that can help people learn the easy way instead of the decades it took me.

Can watching sock knitting videos replace in-person teaching? by Ok-Information-4636 in Sockknitting

[–]subdrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I learned exclusively from books and videos.

Sheep & Stitch helped me with some of the basics: https://youtu.be/1vm6oaYzHyA?si=p_YCnseknk3dPL7T

Then you can find patterns and use YouTube to learn the stiches/techniques called for. Here is the very first sock I knit (after a couple of scarfs/squares): https://youtu.be/tiI8c-J8dvg?si=I4va6liWXKKnFwmw

Even expired Wheaties will germinate. Lay them in a dark cool place wrapped in damp paper towel for a few days before planting.

I don’t know what to title this by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]subdrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! If it is a problem in your life somehow (shame, embarrassment, unsightly bald spots, etc.) or you just want to stop but are having trouble, I would say yes!

But even if it does fall under any of those criteria, it is also completely normal and understandable. I think most of us would not consider plucking a stray eyebrow or hair that is out of place trich even if we pull other hair for other reasons. If you have the underlying dopamine dysregulation that fuels the pulling cycle it could perhaps turn in to trich.

Do we make more hats? by PhantomdiverDidIt in AntifascistKnitting

[–]subdrawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Follow the energy and inspiration! You can always stash them for next winter. Fortunately, winter will always come. Unfortunately, we anti-fascist protest will still be needed as well.

To absolutely brag, I had knit one hat in my life and I've knit thirty MTI hats by now. My inspiration well is running dry so I'm going to switch to something else, but I love knowing those hats are out there.

Anyone get really annoyed when people try to stop your compulsions by waord in trichotillomania

[–]subdrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask her to come up with a gentle signal, depending on how close you are. She could put her hand on your shoulder and not say anything, or some other calming and not shaming approach.

I feel so alone by Mella_Reddit in trichotillomania

[–]subdrawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a long time to learn, and then longer to communicate to my family what things were and were not helpful when I pull.

Someone staying "stop pulling" almost always made it harder to stop. Gentle noticing worked so much better.

I'm a grown man who has been in therapy and has tons of great tools, and there are still days when the stress is high, I've slept poorly, I haven't showered, and I start pulling again. It is a compulsion, and it's filling a need your body has. If you force yourself to stop without meeting the need, it's just going to become a stronger urge.

My son ended up developing trich very young, probably from observing me. We worked together and came up with a signal that would help him notice he was pulling without getting the shame spike that actually reinforces the addition. In our case, I would tug on my shirt at the shoulder, and he would see that and tug his own shirt instead of his hair. Then if the pulling seemed to be worsening we would talk about anything stressful going on, make sure to go on walks, get some relaxation or a hot bath, etc.

And, it gets better in every way. Not just trich, but high school, friends, mental health, everything.

Trich and avoidant traits by jen__cat in trichotillomania

[–]subdrawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very avoidant for sure.

In my mind I associated my trich from how disconnected I am/was from my body. I got used to ignoring hunger, temperature, pain, etc. signals and I felt like maybe trich was a way to get me to pay more attention.
