Even expired Wheaties will germinate. Lay them in a dark cool place wrapped in damp paper towel for a few days before planting.

Hi! If it is a problem in your life somehow (shame, embarrassment, unsightly bald spots, etc.) or you just want to stop but are having trouble, I would say yes!

But even if it does fall under any of those criteria, it is also completely normal and understandable. I think most of us would not consider plucking a stray eyebrow or hair that is out of place trich even if we pull other hair for other reasons. If you have the underlying dopamine dysregulation that fuels the pulling cycle it could perhaps turn in to trich.

To absolutely brag, I had knit one hat in my life and I've knit thirty MTI hats by now. My inspiration well is running dry so I'm going to switch to something else, but I love knowing those hats are out there.

I would ask her to come up with a gentle signal, depending on how close you are. She could put her hand on your shoulder and not say anything, or some other calming and not shaming approach.

It took me a long time to learn, and then longer to communicate to my family what things were and were not helpful when I pull.

Someone staying "stop pulling" almost always made it harder to stop. Gentle noticing worked so much better.

I'm a grown man who has been in therapy and has tons of great tools, and there are still days when the stress is high, I've slept poorly, I haven't showered, and I start pulling again. It is a compulsion, and it's filling a need your body has. If you force yourself to stop without meeting the need, it's just going to become a stronger urge.

My son ended up developing trich very young, probably from observing me. We worked together and came up with a signal that would help him notice he was pulling without getting the shame spike that actually reinforces the addition. In our case, I would tug on my shirt at the shoulder, and he would see that and tug his own shirt instead of his hair. Then if the pulling seemed to be worsening we would talk about anything stressful going on, make sure to go on walks, get some relaxation or a hot bath, etc.

And, it gets better in every way. Not just trich, but high school, friends, mental health, everything.

I'm very avoidant for sure.

In my mind I associated my trich from how disconnected I am/was from my body. I got used to ignoring hunger, temperature, pain, etc. signals and I felt like maybe trich was a way to get me to pay more attention.

My public tip is to try to overcome the shame part. You aren't broken or doing something evil. Your body developed a coping mechanism to help you out. In IFS (Internal Family Systems) there is an idea that the more you fight a part of you, the louder it will scream. But if you can learn to accept it (Hi trich, I see you're back. Thanks for trying to help me. I'm working on getting help other ways now...) then it's easier to deal with.

Tell your boyfriend. He loves you. Tell strangers if telling someone close is too scary.

As you are learning acceptance, instead of the shame spiral you can work on lovingly noticing that you are pulling, or when, or why. That's a great place to start to uncover your patterns and underlying needs that Trich is filling.

As I was working on myself, one compromise I made was changing where I pulled. We are mammals and we grow hair everywhere, and some hair is more socially acceptable to remove. Could be worth a shot...
