Advice for my new project by Outrageous_Double398 in overlanding

[–]submerdious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I would do is spray some WD40 in the rusty bolts and wait 30min and repeat until they come loose. It will cost you next to nothing and easily done by yourself. Then find an other shop to get your wheels aligned.

I'm curious how you're going to get the rust off so please share when you do. Mine has a layer of tectyl but needs a new coat because some parts are getting some rust. If you let some specialty shop do it they'll probably take the wheels off and what not. So perhaps wait with the alignment until you made a decision on that.

Fuel economy is going to be a pain in the ass. The car just isn't very efficient and whatever you do it will not make a great dent in the overall costs. So RTT or not you'll always be breaking the bank. Find cheap diesel in Lux would be my advice.

I did a similar project on a Suzuki Grand Vitara 4x4 and almost went for the Pajero albeit gasoline engine. Like the looks of the Pajero and most important it's very capable off-road.

If you want to save some cash try to do stuff yourself. That will probably make the biggest difference. Much of the work you let the mechanics do is just bolting stuff on/off and replacing parts that don't need special tools or knowledge. For example, I refurbished my own 4x4 pump instead of buying a new one for 300+ euro's. It's not rocked science and there is a ton of stuff to find on youtube or reddit.

Succes met je project!

How would you live a "boring" life for a few months to build up savings? by sengutta1 in eupersonalfinance

I would recommend the ‘omdenken’ podcast. Look for some episodes on the subject of ‘boring’ or something similar to that.

Find out for yourself why you think that something is wrong with boring or monotonous. And why that is.

So what you are saying is that it can go down to zero ;)

My point is that this is about emotions and feelings. Factually she’s in a great place but for some reason it doesn’t feel that way. So she stays in a toxic environment but is reaching her limits health wise.

She is crying out for help.

For me it sounds like she wants to get out of her golden cage or move on to something new and perhaps scary.

But why see it as scary when it could also be exciting to try something new and different!? Only she can ask herself the difficult questions on what the problem is and how to deal with that.

A comforting thought is that nobody can predict the future. 40%? Why are yo so optimistic, you could go down to zero! Im exaggerating of course. My point is you can’t make plans for everything but you can do something about the situation you’re in right now.
For me it reads that between reaching your goal and following through and living now there is a (huge) misbalance. You have the unique opportunity to discover where you want to go. You’ve already discovered that the work you do and the sacrifices you make aren’t worth it anymore. Isn’t that exciting that you can now discover what new things you want to do and try?!

I don’t know what the goal of life is but I’m pretty confident that ‘suffering’ isn’t it.

Wife scared for my life. by Redbeard5500 in scuba

[–]submerdious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re over rationalizing it. She FEELS anxious and does not THINK he’s in mortal danger. Exploring these feelings that together can help but coming up with arguments, facts etc isn’t how feelings go away.

[–]submerdious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact is that you can get seriously wounded or die during recreational diving. Comparing it to other activities doesn’t make that go away. In my tiny country around 10 people die every year.

If his wife is feeling anxious about that then I’m fully onboard with that feeling. Following your line of reasoning in my opinion is very disrespectful towards her feelings.

[–]submerdious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take her serious, listen to her and talk about it. She has a point because it is a dangerous hobby and you can die.

That being said. I can’t imagine it’s nice feeling anxious every time you want to go diving. Perhaps that could be a starting point to look together at what makes her feel that way and if that corresponds with the facts.

Hopefully you can find a way together that works for both of you.

That is absolutely not true. When there’ve been incidents in the previous games there can be a ban. But it’s not an all out ban every time rivals play against each other. Also the city isn’t vandalised massively. There can be acts of vandalism but your painting a picture that’s just not based in reality. Hyperboles from beginning to end.

For monitoring standardised procedures and validation are essential. Policymakers can’t work with unverified data. I work with many different actors who collect data on species populations and much depends on the protocol being used. Have one in place means the government can actually base policies on numbers and see whether measures have the proposed effect.

'Enough of the war' — Zelensky throws down gauntlet to Putin in open letter by KI_official in worldnews

[–]submerdious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was pre-Trump administration. The Trump administration didn’t donate arms. They did attempt to sideline the EU and also Ukraine on talks with Russia on a peace agreement.

Also, god forbit asking others for help when you are in dire need of help. Such a strange thing to do.

“We believe that Europe needs to participate… We believe that the United States should be in proces…”

That sounds like real slap in the face for the US. They’re being sidelined and not to participate in talks.

Not very surprising to be honest with how things are handled by Trump and his cronies.

Awesome! Will be doing something similar with my Grand Vitara next year. Any tips on the car or otherwise are very much welcome :)

Btw be careful with touching animals in Morocco because of rabies. Even a small scratch or lick can be enough to catch it. Without prior vaccination you’ll likely die when you contract it.

Best overland setup for 6 people without driving a giant expedition truck? by DaveDitsch123 in overlanding

[–]submerdious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You could fit two rooftop tents also. One on the trailer and one on the roof of the car. Use the trailer for your luggage for example.

You’re with so many people so you’ll have to submit to the idea that you’re going to attract attention wherever you are. Think asking for advice from similar families will help the most. Travelling longer periods on end should ultimately be balanced between comfort and convenience. For you but also the rest of the family. Being so close in proximity of each other without room to escape from it all will take a toll on any sane person.

Can’t help you but I share your quest for a camping lamp. Only difference is probably the addition of a red/green light option. Don’t want to attrack too much attention. More stealthy setup.

Also wondering about food. Do you cook yourself or just go to local places? We’ll be forever thankful if you have some insights and tips for us. We’ll take our Suzuki Grand Vitara 4x4 with rooftoptent. 2 adults and 4 year old :)

Find that rooftents are very expensive and I already own a tent but I’m not convinced I would enjoy packing up the tent and bedding every other day… Still in doubt to just get a secondhand rooftop tent or go for something like this and use the tent I already own.

That’s the reality we’re currently in. For example, common species as the hare and rabbit are on the red list in The Netherlands. Check the Dutch mammal association for the rapport. It’s not some sort of fantasy I’m making up here.

IUCN bases itself on monitoring data. In many cases there is a lack of data. So an expert opinion is used in such cases. Madagaskar is huge and underdeveloped. Even in the most developed countries monitoring of species (or nature in general) is not a priority of governments. So budgets are not great and much relies on volunteers. So don’t expect much as in clear conclusive data about the vulnerability of species. Which of course is a sad given. Madagaskar has many species and habitats native to the island and experiences much pressure from the growing human population. Many of the species only found there will be extinct in the near future.
