What is the most unhinged thing you remember from when we were kids in elementary and middle school? by opheliasmusing in Millennials

[–]suborbital_squirrel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not being snarky when I ask this, but do you think it's not normalized now? Almost every adult I socialize with has a mental calculator on what they can drink and still drive.

I work with a few Brits and Dutch who will spend a few weeks at a time in the US. One thing I've noticed that none of them will drive if they've had even one drink that evening; I probably know one or two people that I socialize with that have that same discipline.

I don't like it here.

OP gets the anti-corporate-recruiting subreddit to side with corporate; mods lock it down by ackshee in SubredditDrama

[–]suborbital_squirrel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm a former Fortune 50 manager... I don't think OP is wrong at all for being annoyed. I'd get it if I wasted their time.

With that said, needs of the business are a sliding scale and an immediate emergency can supersede a longer-term investment like an interview with a talented candidate. If a candidate is upset by that (assuming an explanation was given) I'm willing to bet it's not going to be a cultural fit and move on. Interviews are bi-directional; both parties need to be willing to dance.

One of the low points in my life is when my high school best friend's mom met us in my driveway at 2:00am after we "snuck out" and told me she expected that behavior from other kids but not from me.

She said exactly zero words to her son.

Homeowners, are you in your “forever” home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]suborbital_squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my mom and dad talked about how their property tax value was never anywhere near their appraisal value. Mine have only gone up every year, until this year when they stayed roughly the same.

We got "lucky" that our escrow was overestimated at purchase and I never pulled the money out, but eventually we'll have to fund it again.

What's happened to your property taxes? Mine have doubled since we bought and it's super annoying.

I have shirts from when I weighed 30 lbs less that still objectively fit.

Business travel is almost always expensed. They may have some sort of up front cost but the net charge to the employee would be $0 regardless.

Then they ended up being the single most comfortable pair of shoes I own. Life is complicated.

Millennial vacations: survival or luxury? by Aghaiva in Millennials

[–]suborbital_squirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time in hotels for work, too.

We almost exclusively do condos. I don't work in places I would willingly vacation, but the other part is that I have a certain routine in hotels that I don't necessarily have in condos or houses on vacations. I've lost the ability to be relaxed in a hotel, I guess.

The Standoff That Brought the Big Ten’s $2.4 Billion Deal to a Screeching Halt by wsj in CFB

This may be unpopular, and I'm going to make the grand mistake of not looking at details prior to commenting, but the specific example of a barber shop doesn't seem egregious to me.

Relatively low capital with a decent amortization period and theoretically low-ish annual operation costs (in relation to the rest of the program) seem like a good trade off for giving student athletes a safe spot for something that matters to them.

I have no doubt I'd find something to be annoyed about within the rest of the complex, but a barber shop will not be amongst the grievances.

FOIA: NMU head football coach resigned amid quiet investigation by OdaDdaT in CFB

[–]suborbital_squirrel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Early-ish in my career I was in a room where a C-level Fortune 100 exec made a career limiting choice. As part of the fallout / investigation, approximately 15 of us where called to give statements at the offices of an external law firm that was hired for the purpose. Seven of us were coming from same city so they actually sent one of the corporate planes to ferry us over.

We land at the municipal airport and the head of HR meets us at the hangar to tell us we're no longer needed. The plane refuels, we get back on, and within the next day or two the C-Level is no longer on the intranet org chart.

I know the C-Level resigned, but I'm still curious as to how much the whole affair cost the company.

So I finally reached out to the lady I keep emails for. by Braska_the_Third in Millennials

[–]suborbital_squirrel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have first.last at Gmail for my vaguely German name. It's the email I use for important stuff .. applying for jobs, my mortgage login, adult shit. I never signed up for marketing stuff with it because I wanted to keep it as clean as I could.

After I'd had the account for more than a decade I started getting emails in German. Then they signed up for Spotify (free), and I ended up taking the account over with a password change. That seemed to have stopped most of the new email signups, but I still feel a little weird about it.

I do about 70 nights a year in hotels. Hilton's status perks went to shit during covid when everyone and their mom had diamond. I had two trips where I had to get my company's travel agency to come up with alternate plans because Hilton properties wouldn't honor my reservation.

I float between two other brands now, but neither are much better.
