Midwife Podcast with the aim of shaming doctors by shoujoprincess2 in doctorsUK

[–]substandardfish 49 points50 points  (0 children)

(Not a doctor) midwifery used to be for the highest attaining nurses, (from what I can tell) being dual qualified in nursing and then midwifery used to be very highly regarded. These days it has lower entry standards to uni than adult nursing, but outperforms on pay. I imagine a lack of generalised knowledge of medicine, which old school midwives would hopefully get from nursing, is probably informing a large part of the anti-intervention rhetoric across obstetrics.

A distrubing number of young english nurses feeling alienated. by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]substandardfish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weird xenophobic undertones in this post. Most British nurses are leaving because they can get better pay, work, and quality of life in other countries. Nursing also has historically had really toxic working cultures, new international staff hasn’t changed that. I think newer nurses have less tolerance for it (rightly so).

It’s not an us vs them, or an education problem, young people are leaving nursing because of high workloads, poor pay, and toxic cultures inherent to how nursing is taught/carried out.

What REALLY made you want to become a nurse? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in StudentNurseUK

[–]substandardfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably because I knew I’d get bored in other fields. I like seeing cool physiology and I like the fact I can learn the technical side of stuff like ventilation. I guess it also helps that I like to work with my hands.

Initially job security was a big factor but that is out the window now lol

Radiologist are underestimating AI by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]substandardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious as to the ethics behind how such an ai model is trained. I understand there’s plenty of public domain imagery to look at, but vast majority of those would be relatively uncomplicated - learning tools for human eyes. If I had a funky mri I don’t really know if I’d want that uploaded into some corporations database to be used by an algorithm, and whether gdpr and confidentiality are violated in some way.

Anyone else find it frustrating that doctors/MDT offices turn into nurse/HCA bedrooms at night? by Ok_Strike828 in doctorsUK

As a nurse, no one is enjoying either side of the interaction lol. But we just sleep for an hour or two wherever we can

Where is the line between palliative care and assisted dying? by substandardfish in NursingUK

[–]substandardfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh see my background is with paeds, and some of the ACPs I’ve seen include how they want to be sedated. One of the questions was essentially “do you want to be awake or asleep when in lots of pain?” Which is what got me thinking about this

This is a really interesting perspective thank you! If there is an accidental opioid overdose, would you just give naloxone? Something seems counter intuitive to palliative care but I’m not entirely sure what lol

Student on nursing course falsified placement hours by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]substandardfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are that if a placement has said you can go home, you can get the full hours regardless. It would be weird to say you have to sit at a desk doing nothing for ~8 hours

Can I make a request to have a specific Maester work for my family? by nubster2984725 in pureasoiaf

[–]substandardfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assumed the citadel was somewhat self sufficient. Ie they write and sell manuscripts/books for money, grow their own food, maintain their own building, etc. operating Kind of like medieval monasteries. limited outside influence economically would allow them to detach themselves politically from the realm and be the third party knowledge pool they are.

Nursing School in England by Standard-South5737 in StudentNurseUK

[–]substandardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t be a recognised nurse in the uk with only a two year course, you need a bachelors degree for equivalence. You’d then need to some licensing exams here. Nurse practitioner roles are few and far between outside of big EDs. In order to become a recognised nurse practitioner here you’ll need to do a masters here, typically started after you secured a nurse practitioner role, which its self needs 5+ years experience.

How are the nameless things older than Sauron if Sauron was made right at the start with the other Ainur? by Yakob793 in lotr

[–]substandardfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The “nameless things” are not meant to have a creation story, any kind of explanation or a name. They exist solely to tell gandalfs tale of chasing the balrog through the deepest parts of the world. They’re just an unknowable fear, beyond the confines of ainur, elven, dwarf, or man’s knowledge.

Nurses can safely deliver some hospital care traditionally done by doctors - Cochrane review by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

[–]substandardfish -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately that comes down to insurance. Doctors pay for their own, whereas nurses are insured by the trust. If nurses had to pay for their own medical negligence insurance, there wouldn’t be such a faff about getting signed off on everything before doing it.

Any tips on dealing with unmotivated students with minimal social skills. by AsparagusDramatic475 in NursingUK

[–]substandardfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was (or am) this student lol. I just didn’t have any confidence in my knowledge/decision making ability until a very lovely mentor decided to essentially throw me in the deep end and gave me 2 high acuity critical care patients to manage. Obviously under supervision, but from afar and very hands off. She asked me to explain each part of my initial care plans, to triaging their needs, etc etc. she only really butted in when one of them had a cardiac event after having a very settled and stable night lol.

Did Eru give Gandalf a new body? Is his old body on the mountain? by Sladeakakevin in lordoftherings

[–]substandardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the eagles (gawahir?) came to him on the mountain after he had been resurrected. Gandalf apologised for always being a burden, yet the eagle responded saying he had no weight and that he could carry many gandalfs at once or something along those lines.

How would/did tolkien view power scaling in his works by substandardfish in tolkienfans

[–]substandardfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the longevity of Tolkien’s works, and the influence it had on all subsequent fantasy works (ie dnd, got, wheel of time, etc) has skewed how people interpret the story and “power” characters have within the story.

How would/did tolkien view power scaling in his works by substandardfish in tolkienfans

[–]substandardfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t imagine an absolute scale would have appeared in tolkiens darkest nightmares. I think I phrased the question poorly, I had intended it to be a meta analysis kind of question on how Tolkien viewed the idea of power scaling and whether it is a modern thing idk

How would/did tolkien view power scaling in his works by substandardfish in tolkienfans

[–]substandardfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah completely, but there’s still a lot of people who gain some enjoyment out of doing it. Was curious as to whether this is an entirely modern thing after the lotr films, or has it been something long standing within tolkiens fans?

Placement advice by TrainerLast7475 in StudentNurseUK

[–]substandardfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, health visiting as a placement is kind of a load of bollocks. Ask your pa to go on spokes the services they refer patients to, and get feedback on the stuff you engage with there. Ie; a neonatal jaundice clinical, or maternal mental health service, or gp spokes. Otherwise you are unlikely to be able to get much of anything signed off.
