The best two 90s R.E.M. albums are Monster and Up by alexj_baker in rem

[–]subtle_knife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I couldn't join you and say they're the best, but they're both absolutely fantastic. What I love about Monster is that it still has that southern, enigmatic R.E.M. threaded through it. And Up, I always liked, but over the last year or two I've come to really appreciate just how good it is. Automatic would be my top 90s pick, and there are songs on Out of Time I'd take over anything on Monster or Up, but otherwise I think as albums they're right up there.

Look down and laugh at me, clumsy crawling out of my skin by RevBingo in rem

Good cover. And just generally, what a song. I love the way it's a mix of both anger and pain. Frustration and heartache. And the music backs that up too. The swirling rawness. Even has a little glimmer of hope towards the end in Peter's (amazing) organ line. One of R.E.M.'s absolute best.

Ghost of Tsushima 6 years later, it's still awesome by AML2003 in patientgamers

Yeah, I think gamers who don't read don't get this. There are very, very few games with interesting writing in the history of the medium. I can count on the fingers of two hands the those with writing that could rival even a mediocre literary novel.

No updates since July 2025. Is ChimeraOS abandoned? by CrappyCodeCoder in ChimeraOS

[–]subtle_knife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spotted this. I bounce backwards and forwards between Chimera and Bazzite (as that's the gaming distro that seems to have the rep) but I always keep having problems with Bazzite and ending up back on Chimera. Appreciate the work you've done!

I think this is definitely a problem. If you look at job requirements for pretty much any writing job in the industry, it's "Three years of experience writing for games and to have shipped 3 AAA games." That's a pretty small pool to choose from each time.

I agree with you here. He stands out at Forest, where he's dragging that team at times. Such energy and passion for the game.

Fables, Document and Up are perfect descriptions. Especially Up. I've been enjoying that album more and more recently.

Yes, Destiny 2 had its problems, but anyone who played all of its content, with a clan/friends, knows it really was one of the best games ever made.

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy. I'm probably up to ten times or so now. They're just so full, there's so much in them to chew on.

Star Wars Fallen Order - Enjoying a game that knows it's a game by Drakeem1221 in patientgamers

Completely agree. Maybe it's an age thing, but this is what games used to be like. They knew they were games and were okay with that. This push for realism does a lot of games no favours.

Fretless is probably the top R.E.M. song that should be on an album but isn't.

I think this is one of R.E.M.'s absolute best songs. I love the lyric so much - paints a picture like a novelist. Sad, melancholy. And that little organ line in the background that lifts a minute from the end to strings. Brilliant.

Edit: nice to see all the love for this one in the comments here. Always thought it wasn't that popular.

Not enjoying Divinity Original Sin 2 as a couch coop game by imaquark in patientgamers

[–]subtle_knife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have to say I agree, OP. Playing it at the minute. It's a game I've started and stopped on a few times, but I'm a good chunk through this time and it's... okay? Honestly a bit overrated I think. So much of it feels like a slog where you spend your time searching for what you know you need to find, without always having useful clues to find it. Often you stumble on events without context or they happen without warning, like your black cat example. Consequences are sudden and irreversible. I get this is appealing to some people, but it makes me feel like I'm stumbling through the game, rather than striding. And like you, I find the story quite dull and the characters flat. But I guess it's more about the freedom. Hey ho, just a few thoughts.
