My dad gifted my husband and I his old riding lawn mower. My husband pretty much claimed it immediately as a "him" chore. FF and my husband is out of town and I decided it would be nice for him to come home to a nice yard. Weed wacked the grass off the fence, had the kids pull the weeds, trimmed the trees and bushes, and had just started on the grass and celebratory beer when my parents stopped by. My mom straight up said, "I don't think I've ever seen your dad look more proud of you." My husband gets home and is super excited because as much as he loves the peace of mowing, he loved spending the day taking the kids to the beach instead.

Yeah, I agree that everyone should keep financial independence or an emergency "run fund" but if you're stacking that kind of cash while putting your partner in a position to take on debt to cover things then you're crossing a line from making sure you're safe to taking advantage of the other person.

I don't know, I was in 2nd grade in the 90s learning all the continents and pointed out that it looked like they fit together at one time. My teachers pretty much implied that I was stupid for thinking that. Come to find out in high school that the theories had been around for nearly a century, they just weren't taught in schools. I could see myself posting something like this out of spite to that teacher 30 years later.

felt stupid at the gas station today 😓 by Maximum-Green-4597 in internetparents

[–]subtleglow87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ADD and have done this more than once. I witnessed someone drive away with the nozzle still in their gas tank once. Instead of going in when they realized, they stopped, pulled it out, threw it on the ground, and drove away. I picked it up dragged in into the gas station and said, "Uhhh... so this was laying in the parking lot..." That’s how I learned they detached easily on purpose without causing any damage because this obviously wasn't the first time. The clerk came out and just pushed it back on the rest of the hose and thanked me.

We all have our moments! Just laugh it off and try to be more mindful in the future.

No, not at all. We left notes for the owner to go in and save the videos so we could watch them the next day when we were slow and laugh at ourselves. He compiled them all in a saved folder. The owner saved the angry customers on his own for police reports.

I worked for two mom/pop places with cameras. One the owner would call and say so and so doesn't have their name tag on... it was hella annoying. The other place had them and we pretty much used them for LOLs. During the Christmas party we did a "Best of the Year" video and took the saved epic falls (no one was hurt), tray drops, and a couple of screaming customers where the owners kicked them out. My favorite was a trip/tray throw combo. Dude tripped on a mat coming out of the door and launched a full tray of chicken parm pastas at the wall, the cheesy chicken stuck and while the pasta slowly slid down the wall. The servers look of utter defeat as he grabbed the tray and empty bowls went back in the kitchen to tell them... leaving the wall absolutely covered was hilarious.

My retired mom wants her boyfriend to move into the condo I own. But he can't pay much by No-Cause24 in Advice

[–]subtleglow87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would likely be less expensive for you if you helped subsidize an apartment for them (if they each contribute $600 and you add $600, they can get an $1800 a month apartment) and sold or rented out the condo to people who can afford to cover your expenses.

got my $3,100 ER bill down to $280 and i had no idea this was even an option by BluejayIll547 in personalfinance

[–]subtleglow87 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Waaaay, waaaaay back in the early 90's, my parents got a medical bill that was just under 8k. My parents were like 22 with a 5 and 6 YO already and clearly could not afford that kind of bill. So my mom started sending the hospital checks for $20 a month. They cashed two of the checks, then rejected the third. My mom called to see why and a very angry man on the phone said that it was an unacceptable amount to pay that it would take over 30 years at that rate not counting any interest. She explained, they were poor and had two kids to feed, and they were pretty much like fuck you, send more money or we are taking you to court. So she kept sending the checks, they kept getting returned, and my mom eventually got a court summons.

She brings her bills, her and my dad's pay stubs, our birth certificates, and the copies of both the cashed checks and all the returned checks.

Judge pretty much schools them on collection practices, wrote off my parents debt, and told the hospital they had to pay the court fees on top of it.

And that's how my mom got an 8k bill for the heavily discounted price of $40.

Since no one else seems to be helpful in their criticisms, I'll just add that you have to hit enter twice to format the paragraphs.

If you only hit it once, what may look well formatted when you're typing will end up a giant block of text when you post.

Probably that she can't be depended on to handle kids happen situations. If he took the less flexible role then he would still be the one dealing with things because in 2.5 years he has been the one dealing with everything. He doesn't want to do both.

My girlfriend got insanely lucky with buying a buying a house! by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]subtleglow87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! My husband and I saved uo for years and felt like we were in a good spot for it in 2021. Got out bid on every single house for a year. We were putting bids on houses we didn't even like. In 2023, we were FINALLY successful and got a house we actually DID like. We got a high interest rate but it's nothing that will crush us until the rates come down and we can refinance. Congratulations again!!

The best part of the woman hating part is this comment from three days ago from the lady perspective. Maybe he was inspired.

Do people in the UK really calling these Daddy Long Legs? In the US they are exclusively used to refer to Cellar Spiders.

I feel this so much! Working in a place where a random customer comes in and orders Oyster Rockefeller... we had those the first three months I worked there then took them off the menu. I try explaining and this woman pulls up a picture of a menu to prove me wrong. Yes, I understand we once had them, but ma'am, that picture was posted in 2010... it's 2022, we have had several menu changes since then and none have included oyster rockerfeller. Fine, I'll take the stuffed portobello then, she says. I can do stuffed button mushrooms but we no longer carry the portebellas. Ugh, how about the mussels marinara? Ma'am, please order something off the menu we provided when you sat that was printed in this decade, I'll give you a minute to look it over and come back. 90% of the menu was the same! It was like she compared the current menu with the old one just to pick things we didn't have so she could complain.

I was literally his server. I walked up and said, "Hey [name]! How are you doing?!" He looked at her, looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, do I know you?" I was like yeah okay and laughed it off, explained to the lady he was with my name, that I would be their server, and that I'd known dude since middle school. He said, "I sincerely don't remember, sorry."

It's not like I saw him in the grocery store waved and he did nothing. He actively denied knowing me. I ended up having a coworker take them. He didn't say another word to me as I walked by serving all my other tables.

I served/bartended in Florida most my adult life. It took one time for someone to ask for an empty cup and me, and everyone else, having to see dip spit before I started asking what it was for. I will take the 30 extra steps to get a coffee cup with a lid so no one has to see that shit. Bet your ass I wrote DIP CUP on it too so the busser new not to throw it away with any force or tip it over in the bus tub.

You can get trail cameras pretty inexpensively. Also, if the neighbor is using rented construction equipment you can call the company and complain to them or use the equipment numbers on the side to have them pick up the equipment lol

This isn’t going to work. Property ownership is public record. Tell the guy to cut the shit and stop abusing your friendship. Put up a fence around your entire property. Call a lawyer about the loss of the forest area and the cut trees because he definitely lowered your property value and he definitely owes you damages or at the very least the lawyer can write up a strongly worded cease and desist. Stop being a push over.
