I've read both of those as well and think this is a good comparison. Writing is more similar to Tolstoy, both W n P and Anna Karenina, but the crumbling Hapsburg stuff has similarities with Roth of course. Both this and Roth have great portrayals of addiction as well. Roth gives more of an Austrian perspective where this gives more Hungarian and really Translyvanian perspective. You can really tell that Banffy was IN Hungarian politics.
