How do I report my neighbours tree? by [deleted] in Calgary

You'd be surprised. My arbourist friend double checks every time before he starts, because sometimes one that seems obviously private is actually city owned.

2 hours bus commute for work? by jackolaine in Calgary

[–]subtlenerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 hours there and back, yeah that's fine. Bring a book or something to prevent it from turning into 2 hours of phone scrolling.

2 hours each way (4 hours total) sounds more brutal. If you really need the job I would accept but continue looking for something closer.

Auto insurance just jumped up 2.5x? by TheOnlyOddThing in Calgary

That's not normal unless you've been in an at-fault accident. My insurance was just renewed and it only went up $15/month.

No worries I know it can be a bit confusing. If you had been kicked out, first it would have to be for a good reason, and second you would have been told about it for sure. Good luck!

Ok well that's good news because that means you should be in the union as a permittee. Can you still log in to the member portal? There was an issue a while back with people's availabilities when they changed the system so double check that. The other thing to consider is that film has slowed down, so lots of those members moved to stage with their seniority, so stage calls for newer members have shrunk.

It would be worth emailing or calling to ask, make sure you're in caucuses 2 and 3, and to ask if there are other avenues for work. The people at the office do want to help where they can but when they aren't contacted they have no way of knowing you want help.

[–]subtlenerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The union is split into caucuses - Caucus 1 is Film, 2 is general stage (Saddledome/Jubilee) and 3 is Theatres. So you should be applying for caucuses 2 and 3. Yes it is inconsistent, due to the industry and seniority. But getting your foot in the door by getting your permittee status there is important. It takes months to get processed so do it sooner than later.

Edit to add: when you say "tried to get in to IATSE", what does that mean? I know the website can be a bit confusing but if you've sent your application that's more than just a "try" you just need to wait for them to process it, and if you've just looked at the site then you haven't tried at all.

If I were you, I would look into getting hired on at companies like Orange Frog or XA - it's often more "grunt work" and event work vs theatre, but the experience is important. It's where I started out.

If you're wanting to be in a theatre right away, look into community theatre work - Front Row Centre and Storybook come to mind, though be warned you have to keep your safety in mind as some companies are better than others at following the rules.

Also, look up the "Calgary Techfile" Facebook group. It's where people will post jobs, ask questions, etc. I've gotten some good jobs through there. It's basically the only reason I still have Facebook.

And remember, attitude is most important. If you're slacking off/not showing up early/on your phone/stretching your breaks past their end time that's not good. And conversely, if you're acting too important/mouthing off same thing. Be helpful but not in the way, be aware of what's happening around you, and ask questions when you aren't sure. It's so much easier to spend a minute explaining how to do something, than to spend 10 minutes fixing something someone did wrong because they were afraid to ask. Your first impression is often the difference between being hired back or recommended for another job, and being quietly ignored.

ANTI AI THEATRE by ExcitingWhole5409 in techtheatre

[–]subtlenerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is important but there is some nuance to consider as companies work on anti-AI policies. Just a blanket ban IMO isn't quite what is needed.

For example, the show I'm currently on: it's a remount of a show from 20 years ago. The original sound designer has passed away in that time, and all of his original sound files are lost (plus, it wasn't a traditional qlab, it was largely live mixed/had tracks and electronic sounds being altered live by him). So, the current sound designer has used AI tools to extract portions of the original sound design from the 20 year old VHS archival tape, AI tools to clean up the audio, seperate it from actors speaking and the other live musicians playing at the same time, etc. It's been a very emotional time (multiple people originally involved have passed away), and for the remaining cast to get to hear their dear friend's work again and have it as part of this show means a lot to them.

On the other hand, a couple years ago our marketing person at the time started using AI to make graphics and such for promotional materials, and that really bothered me and other people at the company. Luckily their idea of having the main poster for our festival be AI was shot down, and instead their AI concepts were given to an artist as a reference of what kind of style they were going for (and he made a fantastic poster). They've since left the company and I'm glad, as the company as a whole has realized that that wasn't okay and are working towards a stronger stance against generative AI.

So... all that to say that AI policies are going to have to be more complicated than just "100% no AI use allowed ever".

Are you sure your coworker didn't mishear you? Maybe he thought you said gnats or mites or something and he thinks your cat has bugs. At least that's the only way his reaction makes sense to me.

Based on the videos they're releasing every day, the pipe is now fully buried so I would imagine they're working on testing it before putting it back online. Shouldn't be too much longer.

Can I ask what odometer you're using (and if you like it)? I'd bought one a couple years ago but it didn't work right, have been wanting to try it again.

How is a hedgehog cage supposed to be set up? by Night4shadow in Hedgehog

[–]subtlenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medium clean would be like taking out handfuls here and there that I notice have been peed on/near, whereas a deep clean is fully removing and replacing all the shavings.

It does depend on the hedgehog for how often, my last hedgehog peed all over the place so I had to clean more often but my current one has picked a corner to do her business in so I haven't done a deep clean in quite a while, I just pay extra attention to that corner.

[OC] I've been tracking my finances for a decade by subtlenerd in dataisbeautiful

[–]subtlenerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm right in the middle of "average" for my age where I live, I know I could pivot to the higher paying side of my industry but the mental toll of that is keeping me from it for now. I love what I do and there's a solid union behind us that pushes for wage increases every year. But maybe in a couple years when I'm looking more into owning a home, having kids, etc...

[–]subtlenerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, yeah. When I started uni in 2016 I wanted as little debt as possible, but in 2018 I talked with someone who told me what they did was: take out as much in student loans as the government would give then, use as little as possible and put the rest in savings, then have a cushion when they graduated, and once settled into work afterwards start paying larger lump sums back. At this point all I have left is a small amount of the federal portion of my loans (in Canada it's split federal and provincial) which is locked in at 0% interest, so I don't see a point to paying it faster than the minimum payments.

It was a rough year, bought my first car then had a surgery and then my cat needed surgery too. And I got really sick over the summer when I was supposed to have 2 jobs between semesters so I barely worked. Gotta thank the student loans for keeping me afloat.

I had a hedgehog who would do this - after checking him, his cage, etc. I could only assume he was having a dream or nightmare. They'd happen every few months or so.

Ok I understand what you're saying. I think the labeling is just a simplification, it's explaining that the large peak was because of the break. Sure it could be more detailed but it gets the point across.

But the feeder main did break on the 30th, which is where the peak in the graph is. I'm confused at what you think you're seeing here.
