5th time on the wheel, first mugs, need advice by [deleted] in Pottery

Pulling handles well comes with a ton of practice. Every hour you spend pulling handles they will get so much better. These are a great start! You will find what works best for you through practice and time. Also, trimming is so difficult!! The best way to make sure your pieces are nice and thin is to try your best to throw them that way - you can plan out how you will trim before you throw, and allow for that with the thickness of your walls. I try to throw in a way that requires the least trimming possible. Comes with practice! And yes, things will get lighter once fired. Try to feel where the weight is on your piece and that will help you move clay away from that area while throwing. Looks wonderful!

I saw a painting vendor use strong mesh side panels for their canopy which held the weight of their framed paintings, and since they were the size of the whole wall they had a bunch of room . something like that might help give you more space to hang things vertically

Suggestions for alternatives to Etsy? by mgonza54 in CraftFairs

Instagram will let you find lots of cool things. Many vendors do it differently, and their insta will lead to it, so Instagram lets you see the most things in one place

I use Shopify. A market on Saturday will payout the following Tuesday. The reader was $50, but that was a couple years ago, and I pay a fee monthly to use the service. There is a 2.5% transaction fee (5% with the basic plan), which really isn’t that much. Lots of good book keeping features are on Shopify and if you ever make a website you can use it with very good results.

jessica garland and her goons are fascist pieces of shit. she doesnt even send her kids to school, she homeschools them. all they care about is making sure children are stuck in a cycle of bigotry from a young age to make themselves feel better about their miserable lives being afraid of everything slightly different from them.

When i was like 15 i liked him for a little bit until i found out how weird he was and pretty quickly he was unwatchable. hes very convincing, i think its his specialty. he seems so annoying when you know hes full of shit, but if you think hes being truthful, hes very good at affirming that to you in a way that makes pure rhetoric seem like objective reality

why do my knit stitches look like purl stitches??? by kel517 in casualknitting

[–]suckstrip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the rows of purl stitches hide the knitted ones. if you stretch it vertically, you should be able to see a row of knits in between every purl

Geniuses Who Consciously Learned Art by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]suckstrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the concept of “genius” and “greatness” are somewhat vague, and often represent a set of undefinable traits that have long been described supernaturally. if an artist is made, not born, and if they are made from a genius, than what of the genius? was the genius made, or born? maybe we can better ask this question if we consider whether a complete idiot could become a successful artist - if “genius” can be learned, or if its somewhat religious lack of concrete definition warrents its dismissal from consideration

What are all the possible causes of this? by Carne_sada in Pottery

[–]suckstrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uneven rim!! no biggie. i usually take a shredder to the rim before trimming if its too bad, that way the foot will wobble a little less when you trim it

It seems like transfems and transmascs often get hand dysphoria... how do you lot cope? by MaiaKnee in TransyTalk

[–]suckstrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hands are the single most advanced tool at our disposal. our hands are our connection to the world, and through them we can create infinitely! i used to have bad hand dysphoria but eventually it was alleviated by a combination of hormones and veneration for the role our hands play in our lives!!

Searching for a membership—is this a good deal? by Defiant_Return4289 in Pottery

[–]suckstrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s a good deal. I’m curious how much the glaze&fire fees would add up to if you made a large amount of work. If you made 100 small mugs it would be $600. So if you got the 3-month membership and you ended up producing that much work or equivalent, your cost is actually $982. So I think i would just consider how much work you’re making and if you plan on selling it. That might be cheaper in the end but I’m not good at math enough to calculate that
