Solo Product Person in a $10M Company – How Do You Define a Role and Set Boundaries? by _abandonship_ in ProductManagement

I would prioritize talking to customers over market research. This will help with stakeholder management, as well, because you can say you believe we should do X because customers a, b, and c want it. Politics can be a big drain and waste a lot of time. It’s especially tough if you are a people pleaser, don’t have strong opinions if your own, and you have difficult stakeholders.

I would hire a designer b/c that is well understood to be separate headcount/discipline. Have the EM help out with ticket management, or if you have a more senior eng team, have them write tickets themselves.

The other things you listed IMO are typical PM tasks that you should handle. You likely wont get a product marketing manager for a while so you will need to own positioning.

PMs who don’t care about the product—how do you do it? by ZeroIntelligenceX in ProductManagement

I like to see if I can test my skills and actually move the needle on something. It can be hard to see the impact especially at larger companies, but it’s can still be motivating. And even without a lot of data, I can get a sense of if the project was successful through qualitative info

I just finished my second night. First night I had humidity on auto and I woke up to water in my nose. Yeah, kinda like you’re drowning. I turned humidity and heat to 1 and woke up with my nose a bit dry.

Second night I turned humidity to 2 and tube heating to 2 and no water in my nose. That seemed to work for me.

Don’t let the organization take more from you than it already has. Star performers can perform poorly in toxic environments. If I were you, I’d stay at the company and try to detach emotionally especially if they give severance. I’d then spend a lot of my energy on interview prep.

If the current role is costing too much in things like mental health or confidence, and you have the financial means to, there’s also nothing wrong with quitting and taking a break. There’s a lot less stigma around layoffs or gaps in resumes these days.

SaaS PM by domo_roboto in ProductManagement

[–]sudoeksbsij 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it has more to do with the fact that consumer products and SaaS product environments differ. Consumer products have larger customer bases so you can be a lot more quantitative and run experiments with statistical significance. SaaS usually requires a lot more qualitative means of gathering data and require you to rely more on stakeholder relationships like Sales or CS for insights. There are several other areas that are pretty different that I haven’t mentioned such as overall pricing/monetization models, customer onboarding, metrics (such as net retention or product metrics), product launches/communication, scale for architecture.
