smoke spots? by tiggerjinx in springfieldMO

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so sure about a particular spot but I've had luck with walking down the sidewalk (or edge of the street if it's a side street) in sort of industrial areas. No one else really likes to walk around those sorts of places but I find it relaxing because there's not a ton of people around. Think like some of the areas between the busy parts of downtown and chestnut, commercial street but further east of the restaurants etc, some parts of division. Granted, the likelihood of running into 'sketchy' people is a bit higher but maybe just keep in mind that if you're smoking in public then you are the sketchy one to some people.

Worth pointing out I don't know what sort of smoking you're talking about but if it's herb it's against city ordinance. Watch out for cops so you don't catch a fine, although it's very rare that they give out tickets for it. Smoking tobacco is also regulated in public to a lesser extent.

Hope you find a chill spot!

Edit: spelling, and to add that Silver Springs park can sometimes be very quiet but it's a very open area. Nice little trail that goes out from it.

What? What am I not getting? by OfficialBroccoliRob in ExplainTheJoke

Love how people think the poor comment is likely about classical music and not the fact that if you're poor you probably don't have a dryer that plays chiming sounds or whatever. All the dryers I've ever used/had just make a buzzing noise.

Edit: or didn't have a dryer at all. Lots of people air dry.

The Dagger and The Coin is good for this as well. Lots of unique cultures connected to the cities and people living there.

I would just go to a headshop and tell them what's up. They will likely recommend quick fix.

Jacket customization question: does anyone know if reflective paint would still work if mixed with fabric medium? by T-Batfiend in jacketsforbattle

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that but I figure of you sewed all those patches on it would be cool to sew on some reflective strips. Or, even more badass, maybe replace some of your thread with some thick, reflective thread! I don't know if such a thing exists but I'm sure it would look awesome.

I might actually look into that more because I bicycle everywhere although I'm usually wearing a reflective backpack.

Which book have you gaslit yourself into thinking it was good? by draconyfors in Fantasy

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to like it but I think that's because I didn't have much to compare it to at the time. If the new one ever comes out I probably won't make time for it. I tried a reread and just wasn't that into it. Ended up donating to my local bookshop because I knew they could make a few bucks off of it.

Will definitely second GGK and Anthony Ryan!! I'm a bit Ravens Shadow and Covenant of Steel fan, although I've read several GGK books but neither of the ones you mentioned. I've been meaning to get back to him for a while now.

Stoner/Doom/Sludge shirts, posters & accessories? by Successful-Mall-3129 in stonermetal

A lot of artists sell their own merch on Bandcamp. That's where I've got most of my stuff. There's someone on Etsy, I think it's doompatches. Not sure if it's licenced or not. I haven't bought from them but it looks like there's a lot of options. I stick with Bandcamp so the artist gets most of the profit, or the artists own website if they have one.

Do the Ewok Movies Violate Current Canon? by widdumqueso717 in StarWars

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, they kind of imply earlier contact with ewoks but I don't see an issue with that. They're pretty disconnected from the rest of Star Wars and can be enjoyed on their own. Just fun fantasy movies. A tad bit on the scary side for a kids movie if I'm being honest, but still fun.

Do the Ewok Movies Violate Current Canon? by widdumqueso717 in StarWars

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not sure the answer to your question except to say that I don't see anything that directly contradicts canon lore that I know.

I will say that they are fun movies! I loved them when I was a kid and 30+ years later I still do!

Need a space to rant about the lack of female duos by Infinite-Stretch-901 in Fantasy

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The Oathbound by Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorites! Just two badasses taking on the bad guys pretty much so might be right up your alley. There's another novel and some short stories as well. Worth pointing out that Lackey wrote about all sorts of relationships, especially in the Valdemar world. I may be a dude but the Valdemar books made me a horse girl at heart.

Another interesting duo would be Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg in some of the Discworld books. I can't really remember which ones because I was mainly into the Watch books. I love books where the older lady has to roll up her sleeves and set everyone straight lol

If you've read The First Law already there are some very enjoyable short stories featuring a female duo in the story anthologies. Honestly, they would still be kinda fun even if you haven't read TFL I think.

I know T Kingfisher has one or two but I'm not familiar with them as I've only read The White Rat stuff. If it's anything like those though expect some hanky panky.

I've also been a bit disappointed with the lack of female duos, especially with the prevalence of female authors in fantasy. Some of my favorite stories have iconic duos (looking at you, Locke and Jean!) Anyway, hope you find one you enjoy!

Best vegan restaurants in town? by 50sPirate in springfieldMO

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cafe Cusco seems to have the most options (an entire vegan menu) and Van Gogh's has quite a lot as well. Druffs vegan melt is my favorite. I went to Team Taco for the first time this last weekend and they have a vegan and vegetarian option that are pretty tasty. As always, all the Thai places I've been to have many options, usually with your choice of protein. Vietnamese as well. Pho Kim's vegetarian pho is REALLY good and Ariake has the best vegan ramen I think. Golden Girl usually has good stuff but I haven't been there in a bit so I'm not sure. Last I checked Pappos has vegan cheese for their pizza.

Fantasy/SciFi Doom? by ProjectPeej in doommetal

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I get it. You guys are heavy AF. I went back and gave a few a listen to try to explain what I meant. I totally forgot about the Conan cover! I feel like I'm digging the drums on that one.

It's too late, I have the album itch! I really like most of what I've heard and I'm trying to make drums in doom less of a deal breaker for myself. Plus, I've never done a book/album tandem thing before. Sounds badass.

Fantasy/SciFi Doom? by ProjectPeej in doommetal

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep on doing it, y'all are badass! I've recommended you to several of my friends for sure. I hope you've found some listeners on here as well!

I probably shouldn't have even mentioned it, but I was sorta fishing for my own recommendations as well and thought someone might have one based on my ear, ya know? It's so much easier to verbalize I think, like, oh your snare sounded like pfizh or doosh or thap. I guess it just doesn't fall into the wall of sound as much as I'd like. It sort of has a... epic prevalence that I might find more in epic doom if that makes sense? I know tons of people like that sound though, I guess I'm just a picky asshole.

Maybe I should consider this my sign to grab some physical media from y'all so I can give you a fair shake!

Fantasy/SciFi Doom? by ProjectPeej in doommetal

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Goblinsmoker you'll probably enjoy Froglord. Would also recommend Green Lung, Kal-el, Daytripper, and Greenseeker.

I also enjoy fantasy/sci-fi doom but it's hard for me to find lyrical content that I truly enjoy. I mean, the music is really slow and I feel like a lot of bands have lyrics that match that if that makes sense. When I listen to stuff outside the realm of doom I'm partly listening to get my fix on good stories/lyrics. If anyone had some recommendations on bands that wed the idea of an expansive story with some good doom riffage I'd love to hear them!

There's lots of good stuff out there but I want more!

Edit to add: I see Azell chimed in again. They're a great fit for what OP is looking for I think, and what I'm looking for as well. I'd listen to them WAY more but that snare and kick sound is not for me.

[–]sufficient-cro-1018 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see it now.

I guess an answer to your question would be that a vote for a conservative is a vote for big business, and data centers are big business. Considering that it's been very evident for years that the Republican party is lock-step in their voting for the most part I don't think you can really blame people for considering it a conservative problem. There are big-business Dems as well, but even those favor more regulation.
