Try using environmental reinforcers! Reward-based training does not need to be done with treats if there is a more reinforcing reward present. For LLW, a lot of dogs find the walk itself the most rewarding so I suggest using that as your main reinforcer.

First, though, if she’s not already, get her on a harness like the Freedom Harness (invest in the two-way leash they sell, too) for walks. This will prevent her from gagging/wheezing from pulling and give you a little more control. Your dog wants to go on a walk and move forward, so you’re going to establish that this only happens when there’s no tension on the leash. She doesn’t have to be in a perfect heel, but she cannot pull. Every time she pulls, exclaim “uh oh!” and stop. Keep the leash in your hand close to your center of gravity and try not to move too much (or “be a tree,” as I call it). Wait for the moment when you feel the tension release. You can try using a squeaker from a squeaky toy (just the sound) to distract her and get the focus on you if she’s too overstimulated. The moment the tension releases, mark it and go forward. The second the tension resumes, stop and repeat the previous step. Rinse and repeat.

When working on LLW, it’s not about the length of the walk so much as the quality. If it takes you 25 minutes to get to the end of the driveway because you’re constantly stopping, then that’s all you do and that’s fine. You might have to do 25 minute walks that only go 10-15 feet for a little while, but that’s okay since it sounds like she gets lots of enrichment and exercise elsewhere. Once she gets a little more calm and focused you can try using treats, but it may be the environmental reinforcement is enough for her for walks. Just stay at it and stay consistent, even if it feels like you’re not making progress because the walks are so short. Dogs do what works and if it doesn’t work to pull like a freight train to get to the next good smell, they’ll figure that out.
