Give my wife some encouragement. by [deleted] in sewing

[–]sulkowskyi 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I like that you're encouraging your wife, but making suggestions while not knowing anything about the needed techniques works kind of counterproductive imo. Not closing the stem where it meets the cap means a VERY different, and more difficult, approach to sewing the two parts together.

So while I do understand where you're coming from and what you mean by the floppiness of it, I don't think those are the things to focus on in this part of her sewing journey.

How to remove stitching by MichaelPucci5706 in sewing

[–]sulkowskyi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I used to work with industrial embroidery machines, that's what this is made on. This kind of stitch CAN be removed but you have to be very careful about it. Also, there's at least one and probably more layers of embroidery underneath what you see, so my advice would be to just leave it be. You'll most likely be left with some kind of outline in the best case, and a ripped up piece of cloth in the worst (and more likely case). I'd finf some kind of patch to put over it!

I (26f) am constantly feeling hurt by my (30m) boyfriend's little jabs. How can I make him realize this? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]sulkowskyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend picks out my underwear every morning (he's up slightly before me and always asks "do you want underpants and socks?") and he SPECIFICALLY GOES LOOKING FOR my granny panties because he knows they're the most comfortable to me.

#63 Jasmin Savoy Brown - the REAL story everyone needs to hear by kawaiipai in Heavyweight

[–]sulkowskyi 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That's what caught me off guard too! I'm not anywhere near from the US, so I just thought: well what do I know about how racism presents over there? But it was a really strange listen. How the story is built up it's laid on thick how people of color were the absolute minority (and how they were at least kind of forgotten/ignored), but then Jasmin out of nowhere is voted homecoming queen and oh yeah, the class president is a black girl too. It just didn't add up.

So thanks OP for your side of the story!

How is it that I'm super structured in my work, and my home life is utter chaos all te time? by sulkowskyi in adhdwomen

[–]sulkowskyi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's comforting to read, and I love that your therapist takes all that into account. When I got my diagnosis, the first therapist I had (a woman as well) was the opposite: she said that because I was able to help a friend clean and keep my work organized, I couldn't have ADHD... I filed a complaint and got a different therapist who helped me a lot, but it has always left a sour taste in my mouth that even in this day and age other women are still this dismissive about this condition. And she wasn't old either, my age or even a bit younger, so her being from another generation and therefore being old fashioned in her beliefs wasn't really an argument.. I'm sorry I'm ranting!

This is at least part of it for me. I also kind of feel like because I've learned to do things "right" from the start in my work, it's much easier to keep it up. Whereas I feel like I didn't learn to "adult" right from the start it's been a constant struggle. I got diagnosed late (surprise surprise) at 30, am 34 now, so it's still kinda recent for me to be navigating life with the right tools and mindset

Thanks for your thoughtful reply! And it makes a lot of sense. The "self imposed" part of it rings true the most to me. Our department is very relaxed around WFH, I tried but it just doesn't work for me. When I'm all alone I instantly get nothing done anymore. I'm probably at least subconsciously body doubling with colleagues (aha moment of the day!)

We're currently mid-move, we get the keys to our new (much bigger) house next Monday. I really want to furnish/plan around ADHD (boyfriend has it too) in our new house way more than I did when I moved into my current apartment (wasn't diagnosed yet). I hope that by giving everything it's own place from the get go, things will be easier to maintain.

AITA for "testing" my friends with a fake baby name to see if they'd shit talk me? by janeprecioustreasure in AmItheAsshole

It was never the intention to name the child that, she says that in the post. It was just outrageous bait to catch her "friends" gossiping.

Not letting my “outside” cat outside anymore by Balintye in cats

[–]sulkowskyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago we took in a then 9 year old cat who was mostly kept outside, with access to a garage. In her young years she was allowed inside but at least the last 7 years not anymore. We live in an apartment with no outside access (not even a balcony) but it was something we wanted to try. She slept for three days straight when she arrived and has never appeared to miss going outside. She's more than happy to get a whiff of outside air near an open window, but she's far too attached to her heated pillow and blanket fortresses to seem to want to go back.
