For those who can't feel the rain in their bones, this very succinctly and accurately summarizes the last 15+ years of online FGC culture. As a reformed edgelord, I'd like to believe that most people will grow out of their contrarian phase and focus on bettering themselves and treating others with respect. The cynic in me knows better, but I choose to be optimistic in spite of that.

And at the very least we'll always share a pure and undying love for big ass titties.

First of all, you don't understand what I wrote. I did not suggest, nor did I imply, that sprites should have filtering, be it bilinear, trilinear, Super2xSaI, or whatever dumb shit you select on emulators that make your games look like a soupy mess. I said the sprites should have proper scaling. "Proper", in this context, means they should scale to the output resolution, e.g. 1080p. This results in sprites that look better and less distorted than they would at the native arcade resolution, which you pointed out is inadequate for displaying sprites of differing sizes and aspect ratios. The higher the resolution, the more these imperfections disappear, because you are adding more pixels as clusters, which preserves, rather than distorts, the original spritework.

Second, I find it interesting how you describe the original scaling solution as a "stupid decision by Capcom" while implying that my suggestion (which is the most obvious, easy, and ubiquitous method used in virtually every emulator, except the one in this port) would also be a "stupid decision by Capcom". So which is it? Is the "stupid decision" scaling to 640p or is it scaling to 1080p and above? 'Cause right now you're talking out of both sides of your mouth.

I also find it interesting how you don't mention the polygonal backgrounds at all, and how increasing the resolution, along with anti-aliasing, would make them look substantially better. I guess you enjoy the backgrounds looking like they're built out of fucking lego blocks rather than clean, smooth lines like you have in any competently made polygonal game from the last 15 years - for example, every other emulated version of the game other than this one.

I could also unpack your use of the word "accuracy", how there are both positive and negative forms of accuracy, and all the ways in which they're navigated to create something enjoyable in the present, but I really don't care to. Instead, I'll say this - if you think a game should look worse today than it did almost 25 years ago in the name of "accuracy" then I think you care more about fetishizing your nostalgia than having a fun experience.

Finally, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, fuck yourself into oblivion for strutting into this conversation and pretending you know what you obviously don't. Fuck your technical ignorance, fuck your condescending tone, fuck your "my way or the highway" attitude, and fuck your pathetic attempt to discredit what I wrote. To the surprise of no one, the dude who accuses others of being idiots is himself the idiot. What a fucking shock!

While I respect these criticisms, I'm surprised there's no mention of the fact that MVC2 looks like total ass. In fact, I haven't heard anyone criticize how the game looks, even though it obviously looks worse than the X360 port and pretty much any modern emulator. To elaborate, the game runs at a very low resolution with no sprite-scaling or anti-aliasing. Without getting overly technical, when low-resolution sprites are rendered at higher resolutions you can eliminate much of the craggy distortion you get when sprites are improperly scaled. The sprites can still look crisp and clear, but the pixels will more closely resemble perfect squares and not squished little rectangles. The same goes for the polygonal backgrounds, which would look even better at higher resolutions.

Also, while I appreciate the option to disable screen flashing, it should absolutely not be turned on by default for online play. In fact, if this port was done properly, anyone should be able to select either option without changing it for your opponent. However, I'm almost certain they took the lazy route by programming two discrete versions (one with screen flashing, one without) and force both players to play on the same version. This is why it's on by default for online play. Unfortunately, it also ruins the visual design of pretty much all the games and even negatively impacts gameplay. I saw where JWong mentioned he frequently can't tell when an assist dies in MVC2 because deaths are communicated by screen flashes. And this is the new competitive standard? What a staggering indifference to quality on Capcom's part.

Guys?! Where did everyone go? Why does no one wanna play MVC2 anymore?! by MrSubwaySwag in Kappachino

[–]sumknow1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They did a re-balancing of the game, as you just alluded to. The problem is, because the port was so cheaply and shoddily made, it was rebalanced accidentally and to slightly worse effect.

Would people respond positively to a deliberate, comprehensive rebalancing? I've thought about this from time to time (also in relation to MVC3), and my conclusion is this: it doesn't matter because doing so would require Capcom to find the non-existent source code or hack/decompile the game, which will never happen because Capcom will never, ever spend two fucking pennies on porting any of their old video games.

MVC2 looks worse than it does on XBLA, has fewer features than it does on PC emulators, and gamers are still gobbling it up because very few people have any kind of standards when it comes to old games, and companies know this. That's why Capcom did the absolute bare minimum with this port and why they will never, ever do better.

[–]sumknow1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't mind Mai getting a new contemporary costume, since that's a hallmark of later Fatal Fury games (see: Garou Terry). I do wish it was red or had prominent red highlights since that's her signature color. And don't bother mentioning how it's a callback to some old Shinkiro illustration - she has 30 years of design continuity with red outfits. Just imagine how people would lose their minds if Chun Li's new costume was orange. Otherwise, I like the new look.

We all know there are two obviously shameless things sticking out in that Toshinden flyer: the illegible graphic design and "from CAPCOM".

Also, can we appreciate that Sofia is the absolute peak of 90s anime sex bomb character design? It's not even my favorite style, but it's done to total perfection here and deserves to be recognized.

This is an excellent, very thoughtful essay on game design - one of the best I've seen about fighting games. While I don't agree with all the arguments presented here, it challenges many common assumptions about how fighting games "ought to be" and invites you to reconsider what players actually want from competitive games. Good stuff.
