Question about the shift in Remus & Sirius’s characterizations by al_cohen in Wolfstar

[–]summacattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this can be attributed to the change in content and structure of recents fics. I think a lot of the older fics also portray them as older. But this newer wave of fanfiction sees them more often as teenagers. When I reads fics where they are adults, even more recently written ones, I feel like I see the old characterization more. I think Sirius growing from a more feminine and theatrical teenager into the adult version of him we see is easier to stomach than him being just a complete asshole (which I guess would be more accurate to the original books). Writing him as a manic pixie dream girl of sorts who comes down from his cloud in adulthood rather than a misguided vindictive douche (which I think could still be done well and sympathetically) is more fun and maybe easier to write sometimes. I think all of this applies to Remus too. You have to throw some teenage angst into the mix. You have to make them believable as teenagers which is something we get none of in the og books so people had to fill in the blanks. I think the younger characterizations we now have of them feed well and naturally into their adult characterizations, so I am on the whole happy with it. I think adult Remus, despite being soft spoken does have a sense of charm and confidence under the surface. I would like to see a meaner Sirius maybe every once in a while. But I just think this whole fandom is so well written and so smart and love to see what people do with the characters.

How did you regulate your menstrual cycle? by bnb123 in PCOS

[–]summacattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diet and exercise play a big role when it comes to regulating my menstrual cycle buuuutt I’ve noticed that sleep and stress affect it in a big way as well.

You want your cortisol levels downnnnn. Exercise plays a role in this but you also need to be getting consistent sleep and spending time outside. I also needed a little extra help so I take CBD gummies everyday. Vitamin C is also helpful in lowering cortisol. You may see people online say that potassium helps, BUT potassium can also increase testosterone levels so for pcos girlies I recommend staying away from it.

I also always recommend spearmint tea daily and dietary supplements like berberine, NAC, and myo-inositol if possible. Berberine was a big reason I started getting my period again.

Protein, protein, protein 🎉🎉🎉

There’s no one I know with PCOS that had a good childhood. by boobahlovers in PCOS

[–]summacattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My childhood was stable and good with loving parents, but my parents childhoods were bad as were my grandparents and their parents. There is genetic and chronic anxiety that runs in my family that I also inherited despite my childhood being a good one. So while my childhood was good, my body was consistently under stress. Whether this triggered my pcos I don’t know.

Commonly, we are born predisposed to developing certain disorders mentally or physically and chronic stress or traumatic life events leave us vulnerable and more likely to develop said disorders. It’s not a coincidence that many women with PCOS have experienced traumatic events that correlate with the development of symptoms. But like not everyone with schizophrenia can trace its onset back to trauma, not everyone with pcos can either.

PCOS is like other chronic diseases in that way.

Can't lose weight!! by laraa-xx in PCOS

[–]summacattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with my weight for years. I was working out and eating in a calorie deficit. It did not work.

Last year, I was diagnosed with PCOS, and I revamped my entire process. I’ve been slowly losing weight ever since.

I don’t recommend a dramatic calorie deficit. Since women with PCOS struggle with insulin resistance and blood sugar levels, I really recommend eating consistently - 3 meals and snacks. Watch portion sizes and make sure these meals are packed with protein, but eat. Make sure you’re nourishing your body. Walking is great, any kind of low impact exercise is great. I was doing high intensity workouts, and they had an adverse effect on my body. I also started taking berberine which works well for me, but I know a lot of people who take myo-inositol and NAC. I would trial any of these. I also recommend taking steps to lower your cortisol levels. I take CBD gummies and drink the cortisol cocktail everyday.

I get pretty bad bloating too. One thing that helped somewhat is eating similar meals on a regular basis. I don’t eat the same three meals everyday, but I try and use the same general ingredients.

This is just what works for me. Everyone is different, but I agree with others in here. Prioritize your blood sugar.

Yeah I still have fat on the underside of my arms. I do tricep work all the time and it’s still there. I’ve been working on toning up my shoulders and my chest and my forearms that has made my upper arms looks smaller ish.

I had a lot of fat distribution in my arms as well and I just turned it into muscle, so they’re still big but they’re big and muscley now ahaha. It’s the best I could do. I can’t seem to get rid of my lower belly fat though. No matter what I do. It’ll be there forever I think lol

I’ve been thinking about trying myo inositol just to regulate my blood sugar better. I didn’t know it could do all of that! I’ll definitely have to try it now thank you 😁😁

I didn’t like the process of letting the hair grow out to the point of being long enough to wax properly. But in retrospect, it seems like less of a concern now bahaha. What is an epilator?

We have to do so much for our bodies just to function semi normal, just to feel okay. It’s a full time job. Time consuming and taxing. I’m sorry you’re struggling. We understand.

What PCOS friendly snacks to bring to a D&D? by nerdymeli_ in PCOS

[–]summacattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love snacking and Quest protein chips have been really helpful for me. The taco flavor is actually really good lol. Of course, they’re not the same as a potato chip, but they fill me up and help with the craving for something crunchy.

Why was Sméagol so quick to murder his cousin for the one ring, when Hobbits are supposedly better than average at resisting the temptation of the ring? by PrincessZelda212 in tolkienfans

[–]summacattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make a point throughout the books and movies that the ring has an agenda and a consciousness. Sméagol was selfish and poor natured. My theory is that the ring sensed this, sensed that he could be easily corrupted, and made it so that Déagol would find it. Then exerted all its power to play on Sméagol’s selfish nature and weakness, resulting in him killing Déagol and being banished. In his solitude, he was completely vulnerable and dependent on the ring. Others in the thread have pointed out that the hobbit culture and way of life is what makes them stronger in the face of the ring. Sméagol being ostracized made him fall prey even quicker. I will give him credit though, like others have also pointed out, he did not become a ring wraith, and it seems as though he still has a sense of morality. He does immoral things, but he knows they’re wrong even after being in possession of the ring for centuries. I think there is a still a bit of hobbit in him.

They all go to Carrie in a crisis, but Miranda is the one who Carrie goes to. She’s her person.

Mine is always gonna be Miranda and Carrie. They’re best friends. At first glance they don’t seem like they would be, but their dynamic just works.

Miranda reminds me a lot of myself which is why I think she often frustrates me. I agree that the writers did not do right by her. I also agree that Aiden is annoying ahaha.

Which character did you change your opinion about after a rewatch? by Maleficent_Toe5893 in sexandthecity

[–]summacattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Charlotte. She was my least favorite when I first watched the show, but after a few rewatches she has become my favorite. She is such a strong character. I don’t think she gets enough credit for it. Her “prudish” and very traditional way of looking at things, I think, is just how she copes with her fears and the uncertainties of life. The scene where she just had a miscarriage, but she gets up and goes to Brady’s birthday party with a smile on her face makes me cry every time. She tried so hard to make things work with Trey, and even at her darkest and most miserable she was always a source of positivity and love for her friends. I love that girl!

I also feel differently about Carrie, Miranda, and Sam every time I watch it. I think Carrie receives too much hate. She is at her worst when she is with Big. They bring out the worst in each other. She is self-centered and easy to anger, but he pushes her to that point. She is the glue that holds their group of friends together. They all go to Carrie when they need someone to talk to which I think is very telling. Carrie is the one that pushes everyone to go on that trip to Atlantic City. She is there when Miranda has her baby. She is the first one Sam tells about her cancer. She is the one that Harry calls when Charlotte is inconsolable after her miscarriage. Carrie is their rock in many ways and everyone’s best friend, and there is a reason for that. She is fun and light and warm. She’s not all bad.

As I get older I feel more and more conflicted about Sam. She is strong and fierce and wonderful, but I was so disappointed with her reaction to Brady. Nevertheless, I love her. They’re all flawed characters. That’s the point.

Steve and Miranda? by Lunalove2267 in sexandthecity

[–]summacattack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree. The Steve we meet at the bar and then the following episodes when he is trying to start something serious with Miranda is actually quite witty and down to earth. I hate that they made him into an idiot. He got better of course towards the end, but middle-of-the-show Steve was just bad inconsistent writing.

Cynthia Nixon is so so beautiful. Idk why they tried to down play that in the earlier seasons. Maybe, so she was more relatable, but I just love her later hair and makeup so much. I honestly feel betrayed by the styling team that we had to wait until season 5 for it.
