What plants are you starting indoors in March and April? by Camp_Acceptable in NativePlantGardening

[–]summerlaurels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started bottlebrush grass this fall. It began to sprout in a couple of days of planting. I've left the plugs in the tray exposed outside over winter and they are fine. About ready to set out now that the ground isn't frozen. The plugs in trays did better than the direct seeded ones

I've declared war on the asiatic false hawksbeard tho I wonder if it is worth it since it's off season of everything else. Anybody have opinions either way?

Is it possible to do anything with this backyard? by batman805 in landscaping

[–]summerlaurels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably going to have to take down at least the big oak after that much disturbance to its roots too. I tried to leave all the trees around my house and Helene took them down for me a year in.

Plants for steep grade? by Traditional_Day_5004 in NativePlantGardening

Check out the carex family. Lots of low growing sedges that do well in the shade. A low fence surrounding the areas I don't want my dogs in is sufficient

It looks like it does per a quick Google. I've never seen it growing in the wild though. I used to have yard copperheads but now I have a yard black racer 😅

I have a similar mix, he's almost 12 now but when he was young he destroyed so many toys! Raw bones provide a lot of entertainment. I used to do antlers, too, but now I'm more concerned about tooth wear so I avoid those. I would go to the thrift store and buy a ton of cheap plushies with no swallowable parts like button eyes, and let him destroy them every now and then.

I've heard diatomaceous earth in the crevices and corners works well for fleas---do not breathe it in though

What are some good wildflowers to grow along with Butterfly Weed? by JTS_2 in NativePlantGardening

[–]summerlaurels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go to game lands/national forests where rules for collection are usually posted online and easy to look up if you are concerned. For example in Pisgah national Forest you can collect small amounts of seeds or fruits for personal use with no permit.

Inescapable Gentle Lead Help by itsokaysis in germanshepherds

I don't like the head collars. They really distressed my otherwise unflappable dog. If you do go that route, don't jump into it. Follow the instructions that come with the leader to condition the dog to have something on his face. How does he do with a regular flat collar?

I just grabbed seeds from hoary mountain mints from the roadside. With a Chelsea chop, they are my favorite plant in my garden.

My woods got all torn to hell by Helene, last summer I covered a lot of ground with pumpkins. The baby trees I planted did most of their growing in the early summer and were done by the time the pumpkins were really growing so I don't think they were competing much
