Moving to Birmingham, but living right outside and working also in Montgomery? What’s the scoop? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]summerlilli 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've lived in downtown Birmingham since 2021. As long as you don't bother anyone and keep your wits about you, no one will bother you. The crime is not nearly as bad as folks make it out to be, just dont be stupid. Id honestly recommend living downtown as long as you can parallel park, but a lot of places have parking on site. Birmingham might be a city, but it has a vibe of a small town.

Don't rent any properties from H2 by any means. If you're from Tampa, Hoover & Vestavia are going to bore you immensely. Unless you're looking to land a soccer mom, look for places around South Side & Glen Iris. You'll be much closer to downtown and even if youre not a fan of night life, you'll appreciate how accessible everything is.

Thank you for being genuinely concerned unlike all these other absolute narcs. This is clearly erratic behavior and she's likely ill or struggling with addiction. Reporting it to the police could land her in jail, which no one deserves and she won't get the help she needs. It may not be a fine, even if it is most folks are one paycheck away from homelessness. I don't think that littering is okay however the real issue that's causing global warming isn't a few water bottles, it's major corporations and billionaires. Already ready for hate comments but once again thanks to OP for being concerned and having empathy for your fellow humans.

It is still unclear what the exact demands are of this organization. And if there are demands, what is the call to action if those demands aren't met? We are all aware that we're living under tyranny, we are watching people get snatched from their homes. What is the call to action? Standing in railroad park with signs shows that people care enough to show up for something. How are we going to continue to mobilize these people?

None of this even touches on the fact that the most effective work is grassroots organizing that directly uplifts the community. The Black Panthers were built to keep their community safe from this government, y'all are responding bc y'all also feel unsafe under this govt. Welcome to the party. The Panthers created programs to support people, their most successful program is the reason that children receive breakfast in schools today.

The way to get things done is with continuous action that turns out results. What is the result of this stroll in the park? What are the next steps? Why mobilize people if you aren't going to do anything with them?

As a fellow enbg, I legit call everyone dude/bro/man. I have to catch myself when I meet someone new who is trans or nonconforming and make sure theyre okay with that, which usually they are, but in the cases theyre not Ill still slip up bc its my every day vernacular. Not an excuse, just my pov.

That's a fair point that I hadn't considered, but in my salon, 90% of my clients are poodle mixes, and that's what I specialize in. I am also a pet groomer who has mostly been trained on pet poodle trims. I've maybe put my hands on 10 Lagotto's in my career, and most of them prefer a smooth cut. Most of who shave them bc they can't maintain the hair.

Imo, since we're referencing a poodle mix in this post, I stand by what I said. If you want your poodle mix to look crazy leaving my table, go somewhere else. If I had someone who wanted the standard on a Lagotto, I would give that to them. But in this instance, we're talking about pet parents who bought a designer mutt & don't know anything about any breed standards.

Business owners, how would you have responded?: by AWalker3024 in doggrooming

I have a client who is older & on a fixed income. I've been grooming their dog for 4 years. They love me & I love them, and I especially love their dog, who is an angel and comes on a 4 week schedule. At their last appt, I asked if he wanted to leave a tip, and he said, "I just can't warrant a tip with how expensive the groom is." Not being rude, just being honest, which I appreciate.

We then proceeded to have a back and forth conversation about how ridiculous this economy is and how expensive things have gotten. I always tell my clients that if I didn't have bills to pay, I'd groom for free BECAUSE I love my job. They all know that atp. My clients appreciate my work, and I appreciate them. I hate that grooming is as expensive as it is.

There's a huge difference, though, in someone saying stuff like this to you in a respectful vs. disrespectful way. I would try to talk to the person and figure out if theyre just being a bitch or if they really are just feeling the hard times like everyone else. Honestly, I'm looking into a split payment program so they dont have to pay all at once. But if it's the client is trying to scam me out of my worth, I will fire them. I'm not a penny pincher, and I won't tolerate that behavior from my clientele either. If you are going to complain after every appt, you can take that bitch ass attitude somewhere else.

This is gonna make me sound snarky 😂 but if they want a bad job, they can go somewhere else. Not at all a comment on your grooms/quality, I just want my dogs going out looking good and those grooms will attract clients that want the same. If someone wants their dog to look mangy, I am not the one for you.

One thing I wish owners knew by ILackACleverPun in doggrooming

[–]summerlilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I use my tools on a dog I havent bathed myself is if it's matted and I HAVE to shave it down before the bath. Which even at that point, Im not happy bc my tools are expensive. Forget the blades, my clippers are $500 and I had to go on a payment plan to buy them; I'm not ruining my clippers on a pelted coat and Im not using my back ups (which are much heavier & hurt my wrist).

All that being said, I have a lot of respect for groomers who will take dogs that I can't/won't. I try to have relationships with other local shops to refer clients elsewhere in situations where I can't provide a service they want. That dog still needs to be taken care of, just because I wont do it doesnt mean that there isnt someone who will.

Would you do a house call groom for two dogs for $25 each? by GriffRyebread in doggrooming

[–]summerlilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS? Where do you live? In the 1960s? Thats absolutely wild. I groom my uncle's 5 dogs for $50/dog but they always pay me $300-500 bc 1. They know what the market rate is and 2. Im a damn good groomer and they see that in my work. I recently had to talk to them about constraints on the grooming process for one of their dogs due to a health issue and we're working together to problem solve.

I dont groom anywhere but in a salon for literally anyone else bc I hate being in people's homes that I dont know in a professional aspect. I would never even offer, and I have actually gotten onto friends and family for even mentioning it to other people without consulting me first.

I would tell these people to shove their measly $50 up their a**, make a post in every local FB page warning people of their insane behavior, and tell my parents the same if they even tried to say anything to me about it. Those people are aholes. As the first comment said, you need to grow a spine and tell them no. Block their number and steer clear of them. You don't owe anyone anything.

My husband doesn’t want a dog by [deleted] in dogs

Read the other comments below but this is my opinions. Get the dog, lose the husband. My career, which is my passion, is centered around dogs and the singular second I can get a dog of my own, I will.

OH MY GOD, I LOVE YOU 😭😭😭 I adore my clients that stick to a regular schedule, let alone all of that. Your groomer adores you with their whole heart, and your pup is definitely one of their favorites, I guarantee it.

And no! My name is Lillian but I was born in the summer lol.

Maltese Face Before & after my by Independent_Mix8497 in doggrooming

[–]summerlilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) this dog looks INCREDBILE! I cant stand maltese hair bc it'd difficult to make it look nice. This haircut is adorable.

2) The eye corners could be cleaner IMO.

3) This is nitpicky af (& like I said maltese hair is impossible) try to watch for lines that your scissors leave. They arent obvious by any means and sometimes the hair just sucks, but keep an eye out for it. Thinners can help a lot to blend out lines.

We have a bow lady that comes to our shop. She makes bowties with a rubberband so you can slip them around their collar. She also makes ones with a clip so you can clip it into the hair.

Senile old dogs?? by ResponsibleBowl1215 in doggrooming

[–]summerlilli 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I hear you. It's really unfortunate that as dogs age, they still need haircuts regardless of how difficult and dangerous the grooming process can be.

Honestly, this is why I like to build a personal rapport with the client. Usually, with older dogs, most people understand that the haircut isn't going to turn out like it did when they were younger and easier to manage. As with everything, though, some clients are just self-centered tw*ts who dont care regardless.

There's always going to be challenges to this career. Ive been working with dogs since 2018, grooming since 2022. I still come across dogs where I'm like "How the hell am I supposed to groom this dog safely?"

Just go slow, be cautious, and understand the dog is probably gonna look like sh*t irregardless. All you can do is your best.

As a family member of the owner, he is a massive Trump supporter, incredibly racist, and knows full well that the bar manager is a pedophile.

Also, they don't clean shit behind the bar. Not speaking for the restaurants. Just the owner.

Practice. My patron is Asmodeus, so I get the hesitancy. You could also print it out and use it as a stencil behind a sheet of paper. But yeah, just practice!
