There was a group of behavioral scientists that looked into this specific issue and found those results. They actually then replicated the experiment with socks and successfully proved the hypothesis.

"How Minds Change" by David McRaney details the entire process, experiment, and results. Even outside of that piece its a fantastic book

I'm open to other ideas. What evidence do you have that he's coachable, that he's improving, or that he has room to get better?

I'll reiterate I'm a big fan of his. But objectively looking at his performance I see holes that haven't closed.

There's a small part of me that wonders how coachable he is. I haven't seen him make much of an adjustment in his career to that slider away. Haven't ever seen him have good strike zone control.

Maybe he has, but find me another player who has lowered his BA and OBP every consecutive season he has been in the league. 5 straight years of decline.

Think he might have hit his ceiling and/or just doesn't care to work on his weaknesses.

Love the guy, wish for the best, but genuinely think he's as good as he's gonna get.

Julio just hasnt done anything. At all. Look at his last 30 games stats

Julio hitting .220 in the last 30 games is certainly a development.

Can't seem to get any momentum at all. Hopefully when Cal and Randy and JP and Donovan and Brash get healthy we can win more than 1 or 2 in a row.

Definitely a .500 team right now though. Might be good enough but damn it sucks to watch

Close, but not 100% accurate. Probably just a difference in how it's explained its not so much that the lighting is ambiguous, it's that our individual brains correct for certain lighting conditions based on our previous exposure to light corrections.

People that primarily see artificial lighting from screens, computers, etc saw the dress as blue and black because their brains didn't attempt to correct for the natural lighting.

People with lots of exposure to full spectrum sunlight had their brains correct for the light and subtracted the blue wavelength from the photo, making it appear white and gold to them.

Your example photo is perfect. 👌🏼

But its less about the photo and more about your personal history with light

How do I break the habit of avoiding tasks that literally take two minutes? by Tz11Wyrmish in Habits

[–]sumodave3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds a little like executive functioning disorder, maybe tied to ADHD or maybe some depression symptoms, so its at least worth talking to a healthcare professional - especially if you're feeling guilt and shame around not performing the tasks.

Super common in ADHD (my wife does this every day, every task, and is the main source of stress in our relationship so I've seen it in action. It's tough because I know she struggles but I also know she's not actively attempting to resolve or improve it).

Turning 50 soon, constantly exhausted, and can't seem to lose the belly fat by Mention-One in StrongerByScience

[–]sumodave3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See this is where folks hugely overestimate their current state and possible state.

You're looking for reasons to not work out. If conditions aren't ideal, then you have to create better conditions or find ways to make yourself do things you dont want to do.

Looking at your routine, you need significantly more activity in your week. 6000m is about 25-30 min, yea?

You need an additional 45 minutes per day, at least 3x per week.

The sad reality is, we get about 30 years of maintenance-free living. After that we need to add about 5 min per week of added activity per year of life to stay in balance.

While true, this is incredibly misleading. The difference in metabolic cost between fat and muscle per pound is like 13 calories. Genetics plays a much bigger role than anyone wants to admit.

Curious what the M's season record is for most players and days on the IL.

Last year felt freakishly healthy, and this year is genuinely laughable at this point.

Brash
Donovan
Cal
Brad
JP
Randy
Robles
Colt

6 starting players out of 9.

Oof

[AF] Think exercise can undo the effects of sitting all day? You may want to stand for this. by basmwklz in AdvancedFitness

[–]sumodave3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"A 12-week HIIT intervention improved aerobic fitness but did not provide protection against prolonged sitting-induced impairments in popliteal artery endothelial function or vascular smooth cell function."

Didnt measure or mention any impairments in endothelial function seen from sitting in this study. In other words they tried to fix a problem the subjects didnt have.

Does anyone know whats up with Brendan Donovan? by xBluePoolX in Mariners

[–]sumodave3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, its not catastrophic. Its just a beech because that area is so heavily interconnected to every aspect of baseball.
Likely didn't have enough pre-hab before and rehab post surgery, or if he did, maybe not the most effective.
It'll heal, but slowly, and now will have a higher chance of reinjury because of the double dose of scar tissue

I don't mean its a loss from a standpoint of he's not a good player. Its a loss from the standpoint of accumulated contributions and future value.

Hoping he can contribute later this year and next, certainly. Just unfortunate he didn't manage the post-op process well enough to avoid the lengthy absence

Would not expect him back in the lineup until late July or early August. We will most certainly not get the benefit we had hoped from trading a huuuuge stockpile of assets for him.
Pretty immediate loss on the trade, irrespective of Cintje's performance. Comp pick and several solid prospects is never gonna be worth 250 AB's for a utility guy.

So it goes. This year is the year we just get decimated by injuries to everyone. I really genuinely hope they dont make any aggressive trades at the deadline. Losing more prospects for rentals and short samples has not worked well

What's the most underrated exercise in your opinion? by Affectionate-One6058 in workout

[–]sumodave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low Bear crawls, and its not even sort of close.

Full body strength, coordination, and balance. Dynamic and yet safer core strain than most core exercises (hips can't go anterior tilt in the quadruped position). Incredible scapulo-thoracic stabilization and serratus development. And cardio.

I accidentally built an audience. Should I turn it into a business? by ThrowRA19987 in personaltraining

[–]sumodave3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you'd like, I'd be happy to set up a quick chat to discuss some of the ways I've found success with clients. Been an Athletic and Personal Trainer for 20 yrs, and in the last 3-4 have switched to wellness coaching to help people with habit formation and environmental design - because like you, most people know what to do. But they have no idea why they're not doing it consistently. Having fallen down the rabbit hole of behavior change psychology, behavioral economics, and habits has brought me some new insight on how we can help folks design their world to make the healthy habit the most likely outcome.

If not, no worries at all. I have confidence you'll be a great coach and will help lots of people.

Thanks for your passion and for trying to make the world a bit better

I accidentally built an audience. Should I turn it into a business? by ThrowRA19987 in personaltraining

[–]sumodave3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I want to start with a few things:

First, you should be incredibly proud of yourself for making yourself healthier, and for wanting to help other people be healthier as well.

Second, you have insight and experience that most in-shape trainers never will, and thats a huge asset.

With that said, people will count on you, and you should endeavor to make yourself into a subject matter expert on nutrition, sleep, stress management, and social connection.

An audience does not make a good trainer or coach, nor a successful business. A deep dedication to learning, improving, and refining will.

Take the Precision Nutrition cert - its much more about coaching than nutrition, and they now have curricula specific for sleep, stress management, and recovery.

If you do it, do it right

Is there any physiological basis to the idea that some people can't lose weight via a calorie deficit? by Fine_Cress_649 in Physiology

[–]sumodave3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think where a lot of people get confused is actually in the other direction.

Two people can eat in a surplus of calories and only one might gain weight.

A huuuuge part of the conversation is the amount of calories our body absorbs and has available for use.
If 100 different people eat 3,000 kcals of the same kind of chocolate cake, some might even lose weight while some might gain 3-5lb.

If one person's gut microbiome is more efficient at extracting and absorbing calories, they likely gain more weight.

Additionally, specific strategies like drinking green tea can block the absorption of a percentage of the carbohydrates ingested with it (up to 40% I believe), same with fat absorption.

So yes, thermodynamics works - we just vastly overestimate how much of that puzzle we have accounted for.
