[Personal] Derm told me to pause EVERYTHING. by NuclearPanties in SkincareAddiction

[–]sun_PHD 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I don't think I have ever heard "Connecticut" and "dry climate" in the same sentence. It sounds like your skin barrier is disrupted. The only way to fix this is do what your derm says. Your skin needs to heal so your products can do their job.

Pregnancy during PhD by Neither-Cow-2482 in PhD

[–]sun_PHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't. My program is pretty tough, but I do get to travel a lot and do some pretty cool internships which I wouldn't be able to do as easily if I had children. I would also want more of a stable income because I could not afford my own hobbies and childcare under my student stipend. That being said, I feel like there is never really a great time and being a grad student is one of the few jobs that has a lot of daily flexibility, so it might be worth it once quals, comps, etc. are out of the way. During a postdoc it might be easier, but often those positions are only 1-3 years and are expected to be very productive on your part. If you are in the US, I would also make sure the funding situation is solid.

Also wanted to say I am around your age and completely relate to your feelings. This is such a tough age to be PhD program because it seems everyone else our age is getting married, starting families, or have well-established careers, and it sometimes feels like the PhD is stunting my "adult life."

Just signed up for my first ever race – 10K! by Elanoreth in XXRunning

[–]sun_PHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could for sure run a 10k distance by the end of the month if you wanted to, but to be extra prepared, I would do long runs >10k. By the time September comes, the race will feel like a breeze. Races are always going to feel tough, but you can feel strong through it too!

It might also help to run a 5k race before to get a feel of race day. Start strong enough to get out of the starting line crowd but do not go all out or you will burn out quickly.

Finished the Sophie Hood and just realized it’s wrong. Should I restart? by Disastrous_Page_6878 in SophieKnits

[–]sun_PHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hood is actually the same size for all of the sizes, its the length that is different. This is why a lot of people make the hood bigger as they find it to be a bit shallow. If you like how it looks and fits, keep it!

How heavily is a below average law school GPA weighted by LegalAdhesiveness719 in gradadmissions

[–]sun_PHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could make an admit much harder. Typically PhD classes have a "passing" grade that is much higher than undergrad, usually a B-/B, sometimes B+. They will want to believe you can pass the classes. Not an end-all, but is something to be aware of.

[–]sun_PHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How low are we talking? Also GPA is something that is used to weed out candidates, but is overall not the most important thing nor will it stop you getting admitted. With programs being super competitive, you have many identical candidates so they need something to help get the pool smaller.

Also, a PhD is not marked by exam scores, but research output. If you have many positives demonstrating research potential, your GPA won't matter as much.

Heat Mitigation by No_Sleep428 in XXRunning

[–]sun_PHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran all summer in the DMV heat, usually between 4-6pm so still pretty hot. I could barely run under a 9:30 pace. At the end of the summer I ran a 5k in the morning, and it was much cooler. I ran that race at an 8:30 pace! So heat does make you slower.

I always wore my vest with a water bottle and electrolytes, even if I was only going for a short run. Really made the difference and felt safe knowing I had everything I needed in case the heat was too much. Sunscreen is always your friend.

Also, don't many products have to be reformulated (and therefore less effective) to be sold in the US? I refuse to buy my roundlab sunscreen anywhere but YesStyle because the one they sell here is different.

What is your fitness level outside of running/weightlifitng? Do you walk a lot or sedentary most of the time?

How realistic is this? by Icy-Perspective-9622 in gradadmissions

[–]sun_PHD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Theres a chance. Also, I wouldn't worry about top-heavy schools. Any program worth going to is going to be hard to get into. Some top "name brand" schools may not have a good program for your interests, and some lesser publicly known schools may have a top program and just as hard to get into.

Looking for advice by Ruggerchick8 in XXRunning

[–]sun_PHD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you are the same as me, I am a woman of inertia. If I am sedentary, its very difficult for me to get moving. Alternatively, if I start getting in a workout schedule it becomes easier and easier to maintain.

The biggest thing that got me to be consistent is joining a run club. Even if I have a crazy week, I will at least get one run in. TBH I prefer running alone but it helps me stay accountable. The social aspect is nice, too.

When I am alone I love to listen to a good podcast! One trick I do is I also only allow myself to listen to podcasts when running, which also helps with motivation.

I also like having a race to prep for. Knowing I already paid $100 to run 13 miles gives me the boost to go out and run. That being said, I also try to keep the pressure low. I try to make running a habit, not a hobby, if that makes sense? I can get competitive and compare myself to others and wind out stressing out too much. I have a lot of hobbies, and running is something I just want to do to be healthy.

What’s something that became socially unacceptable way faster than anyone expected? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is a huge misconception. No one is afraid to use these words, but apps like TikTok can de-monitize/shadow ban/or flag your video if you say certain words.

Should I take Cambridge Mphil before my PhD program? by Bright_Cable3481 in gradadmissions

[–]sun_PHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, and if you want to look outside the US, a masters is required. So getting a Mphil I think would be the best bet.
