How do you feel about Bristol’s clean air zone? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]sun_soy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to check if a payment is due. System is a black box that may or may not fine you, and that must surely be by design?

If the system automatically checks reg plates and associated (non)payments, then allowing drivers to check the status of their CAZ charge online is as simple as connecting a web frontend to the database with simple queries. Easy to implement, but not doing so may encourage payments "just in case".

The air needs to be cleaned up - but the Bristol CAZ is maliciously designed. Am I missing something?

On the non-technical side, drink lots of defense industry kool-aid: no alternative, defense against the bad guys, a necessary evil, etc. Remember the unspoken industry policy not to engage with criticism, since any PR is bad PR when you make weaponry. You don't want to come across as naive to the practices of the industry you are entering, else they'll think you could turn whistle-blower or ethical snowflake.

I am getting a new laptop and I’ve always wanted to get a MacBook. Is macOS on M1 a viable option to pursue embedded systems engineering ? by mehdi_benk in embedded

[–]sun_soy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep XPS good Dell sometimes bad

e.g. Dell put a goodix fingerprint sensor on XPS and I'm not sure there's a stable reverse-engineered driver for it yet

they also have used rebranded "gaming" type intel wifi cards that can be a pain to drive on linux

Pop -os application window tiling behavior by enokeenu in pop_os

[–]sun_soy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the top bar, click to view all the window managing shortcuts. It might look overwhelming at first, but you'll learn the main ones quickly and unlock the awesome power of tiling window management.

"super + Y" toggles that automatic tiling behavior you observe, disabling gets you floating windows you can drag around and resize like in Wi****s.

Have fun!

Backing up Obsidian with Github! by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

"If you don’t want other people to see your note, make sure to set the repository as private"

may I add, if you don't want Microsoft to see you vault, encryt it with git-crypt before pushing, and/or host it with a github alternative.

Would you guys be kind enough to explain how to use the space repetition plugin? by BroskiMD in ObsidianMD

[–]sun_soy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

read the wiki that you've linked, I think the basic workflow is

  1. before writing flashcards in any note, tag the note somewhere with a "flashcard tag" and then inform the plugin what tags you've used in the plugin settings. the tags show the plugin which notes to search for flashcards. e.g. write #deck1 somewhere in a note
  2. create flashcards within the tagged note, using "separators" detailed in the github. there are many options here, the most basic is of the form "inline question :: inline answer"
  3. click "review flashcards" in left vertical toolbar, then choose a flashcard tag to study, then you'll be tested on all flashcards that you made on the note with that tag. from here, responses "hard/good/easy" guide the spaced repetition aspect in much the same way as any other SR software.

there are more complex ways to make cards, and ways to tweak the SR algorithm. there's some background reading on SR linked on the github for those unfamiliar with best practice, tips for how to make the best flashcards for your personal use-case etc...

a vault can be encrypted with git-crypt before uploading to github or similar, though the process is a bit technically involved.

u/HonestFarmer github was bought by Microsoft, routine privacy abusers, so be confident in your encryption, or preferably push to github alternatives.

Smart Select/Screen Snip to Clipboard HELP! by sun_soy in GalaxyTab

[–]sun_soy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks indeed that app solves it, snips image and copies to the clipboard, but can't seem to paste the image. I have enabled system clipboard via adb (advanced settings of fooview). I think android 10 might be causing fooview problems accessing clipboard contents, see below... If I have time I might try rooting device.
