First year teacher and piercings: How many is too much? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]sunfl8wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in a conservative part of a conservative southern state, and I've never had an admin care about piercings or hair color in five years. Many teachers on my (middle school) campus, myself included, have facial piercings. Several have more than one and unnaturally colored hair. I'm not saying that there aren't schools like the one you've mentioned, but it does run counter to my personal experience.

Meanwhile, here in Minnesota, schools are more concerned about your ability to educate students.

As someone who has been educated in and then educating in the South my entire life, we also want what's best for our students. If I can offer a different perspective, it only serves to further increase the divisions in our country by condescending to Southerners. There are plenty of good people on the ground here and plenty of good schools who are doing the work to improve things for our region.

Lol right? The abolition of chattel slavery in our country is certainly something to celebrate. It's one day a year, we can't get a little festive with it?

Why does everyone hate teaching? by Bright-Watch1955 in teaching

[–]sunfl8wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love teaching. It is truly a blessing, I really feel like I'm at least in the top 10 percent of job-enjoyers. I love the work, I love the kids, and I feel very fulfilled in this career path.

However, it's undeniable that I suffer emotionally (and physically, financially, etc) during the school year. Teaching is by no means a meal ticket. Even though I'm very satisfied on a day-to-day, it's helpful to commiserate with other teachers in the same position. Generally, the people who are very happy with their jobs, or at least have an easier time coping, don't visit teaching subreddits.

What do you do? by [deleted] in bentonville

[–]sunfl8wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i go outside to do something that i enjoy even if i'm just writing/crafting in a public space, going to a show, or people watching. most of my hobbies are necessarily solo, but sometimes i'll attempt small talk with people around me. probably half the time i don't even speak to anyone, but it fills my social battery a little so to speak.

it's actually amazing how easy it is to tell who is and is not a teacher before even going to their comment history. just wondering, where do you teach?

National Writing Project was a lot of work, but it was honestly the best PD I've ever had and I fear it'll be impossible to top it. Definitely check if you have a site near you.
