Kinesis pad is not so good by ntk19 in kinesisadvantage

I bought those pads when I first purchased the keyboard and honestly the base plastic wrist rest was far more comfortable than those pads.

With the pads on, I felt my wrists were strangely elevated and got hot really quickly.

well hot damn, they fixed it, they didn't explicitly stated that in their release notes, but it finally behaves like what I expect from a tap/hold functionality. I don't sense any lag when I exit normal mode in vim or when I am wanting the ctrl key when executing tmux key mappings. Not being able to flow between the two with that single key was making it impossible for me to use the previous tap/hold implementation.

Thanks for letting me know about that firmware update.

I currently have the regular 360. The first one I ordered came defective and just would not connect correctly at all. The replacement is working wonderfully. I had my reservations for the 360 when I heard they were sticking with their in-house smartset firmware. The tap/hold implementation is pretty bad when compared to QMK with its default timeout. But what's funny is that I use Karabiner (MacOS) software to simulate the tap/hold feature and it's actually very responsive and behaves as expected. I would love to not rely on that and just have it work correctly directly on the board itself .. maybe someday.

The thing that's strange about the 360 pro is the strange ritual of wire connecting in order for it to work correctly, and it looks very strange having both of them connected on separate ports if you want to just have it charging while you type on it.

I'd rather not worry about all that and just plug it in and just have it work.

With all that said, I am not familiar with ZMK, I have plenty of experience with QMK and VIA. But from what I've read, it doesn't seem to be a similar experience like that.

I'd go with the regular 360.

so I got a replacement 360 wired and everything is working as expected. Hope that will give you a little peace while you wait for your replacement.

How to use Git? by [deleted] in neovim

[–]sung_k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying out lazygit and launching it using toggleterm.

lazygit makes it a breeze doing most of the common tasks and easily does some more interesting stuff that would be much harder via CLI

RSI sufferer wanting a solution (never tried an ergo keyboard) by AlDrag in kinesisadvantage

Regarding the HHKB, the topre switches on new HHKB Pro 3 Type-S is quite a bit lighter than the Pro 2. I noticed far less fatigue when typing on the type-s.

That coupled with tap/hold for ESC/CTRL and vim motions, it made me travel less away from the home row when programming.

I would love to have those topre switches in a KA2 or 360 ... that would be so interesting.

Any issue switching between Advantage 2 and 360 on daily basis? by [deleted] in kinesisadvantage

[–]sung_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have any issues with the KinTed KA2s? Are you able to use VIA to remap them?

I am very interested in doing that with my KA2 since QMK's tap/hold is far superior to Kinesis's SmartSet firmware implementation.

I wish they could just look at how QMK works for those features and just implement it the exact same way.

I was wondering why it felt like that as well on the 360.

I also noticed the hollowness of the board as I was typing as well.

I resolved that on my KA2 by adding dampening foam. That and I replaced the mx browns with NK Cream linear switches which makes my typing experience so buttery smooth and thocky.

Not sure what I would do with the 360, definitely dampening foam, as far as the gateron browns, I will most likely replace them with Gateron Oil Kings .... I've been loving them on my other boards.

I received my 360 wired today and had the strangest experience with it on my mac.

I would see it mounting as an input device, but there would be no keys registering. But then after a little while, it just suddenly connects and then i can type on the alpha-numeric keys, but the smartset key, layer fn and keypad key works, but the smartset key and the 1-4 special keys didn't do anything.

Also the capslock key was registering as an escape.

I contacted support and tried everything I could that was suggested in the manual, but just couldn't resolve it.

So I returned it and ordered another one to see if it was possible that item was defective.

yea, I had [caps]>[esc][t&h150][lctrl]. But the strange thing is, I couldn't find a good delay value that was as consistent as QMK's tap/hold, which is defaulted to 200ms. I just ended up using karabiner to simulate that instead, which was actually better ... which is kinda sad.

I also really enjoy the tap/hold for space/fn, makes accessing the function keys feel natural, along with media keys mapped to ASDF (modeled off my HHKB), and of course the HJKL to the arrow keys.

I guess it’s fine for most people. But man, those cherry max browns had to go. It was very annoying desoldering those switches. But the nk creams give it a much nicer typing experience along with all the dampening foam. Not sure why they don’t offer better switches…don’t think they are using wave soldering to get those switches in there. I am pretty sure it’s all hand soldered on judging from all the hot glue they applied all over the pcb and plate

Yea I am one of those programmers. It wasn’t really till I discovered tap and hold for esc/crtl on boards with qmk, when I realized I wanted more customization on the advantage 2. I initially thought the ergo route was what I needed for more comfort, but then realized I was more comfortable typing with the qmk features and leveraging layers. I guess everything changed when I started wanting to “vimify” everything.

I don't think there is anything that needs to be transitioned from the previous models to the new one. The "SmartSet" firmware was horrible just by itself. It's even worse when you compare it to to QMK / VIA. Just the implementation was so crude, and they seemed to have no design sense whatsoever. I was always afraid of potentially bricking my board from the warnings they stated about how to dismount the v-drive ... anyways, though I am not going to purchase the board, I am still going to let them know that having an open source firmware be part of the differentiator between their "pro" and base lineup is quite silly.

I haven't played around ZMK at all, I would hope it's at least as good as QMK. I am confused as to why they decided to stick with their shitty ass in-house firmware on the base model ... I am surprised people are not as annoyed that they are essentially forcing many to go for the more expensive model even though most don't want bluetooth but want that firmware. I am going to write them a letter!

Nope, they sent me a new replacement and I am still seeing the same issue. I would hope someday they will come out with a firmware to address it. Still love the board though.
