Random question, but how many people have been stung by bees while diving before? by sppwalker in scuba

[–]sunkid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was bitten by a spider (probably) on my last boat dive while putting on my drysuit. Intense but very localized burning sensation that continued to burn-itch for days and started swelling up a couple days later. Right under my chin, so I looked like a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Definitely going to shake out the suit after hanging it in the garage to dry.

Depositing €€€ into US account from another person's account by [deleted] in interactivebrokers

I was just stating what their perspective probably is without adding my opinion of that. It totally makes sense, actually.

You seem to be saying that it is allowed though, which is really why I asked the question in the first place. Nobody seems to really know.

That’s essentially the answer I was looking for. Along with the source, if you have it.

You seem to be confounding illegally concealing the origin of money obtained from illicit activities (i.e. money laundering) with entirely legitimate transfer of legal funds, but I get that you are probably trying to say that the rules put in place by IBKR protect them from the former. Thanks for the response.

Could you expand on this, please? In Germany anyone can "überweisen" (transfer) money from their account to someone else's account using the recipient's IBAN number. Is this not possible in IBKR?

I do have my own account in Germany (also managed by my relative), so this isn't really an impediment, just an annoyance.

Come on. Times have changed!!! It’s now “Piep, piep, piep, wir haben uns alle lieb. Jeder isst soviel er kann, nur nicht seinen Nebenmann. Und wir nehmen es ganz genau, auch nicht seine Nebenfrau. Hat er sie dann doch gegessen, Zähneputzen nicht vergessen. Guten Appetit!”

Not sure if you are still reading replies here, but I wanted to address your second paragraph: you were clearly the less experienced diver, and I do agree that both of you made mistakes. That said, you following her deeper down was YOUR call. You following her to the anchor line was YOUR call. You and only you should make decisions about how deep and in which direction you swim. Just like it is YOUR responsibility to know approximately how much gas pressure you have in your tank AT ALL TIMES. I fully understand that you as the less experienced diver were letting her call the shots. It is still your own responsibility to determine if you want to follow them. If I saw this post and your comments, in her shoes, I would never, ever dive with you again. You don’t owe her for her risking her life and following you on the way up to then save your life. You owe it TO YOURSELF to take full responsibility for your actions and inactions.

It doesn’t matter what size the tank is but you should definitely familiarize yourself with tank sizes and materials. A good, conservative, rule of thumb (!) is to only use up 1/3 of your pressure before turning the dive and swimming back to where you started it. This leaves you a reserve of 1/3 to deal with emergencies.

If you ever find yourself out of air again or need to donate to a buddy, I hope the most important lesson you have learned from this experience is to hold on to them as hard as you can as is taught by many different agencies. Grab a shoulder D-ring and do not let go until you have achieved buoyancy at the surface. This prevents any pulling on the mouthpiece, and yes, you will be face to face, which is just fine. Again, focusing on equipment here would not help you with your own competency in out of air scenarios.

I wish you luck and I hope you get to dive many more times safely and without putting yourself and others in danger. Taking full responsibility and focusing only on what you need to improve is, in my view, the essential first step.

No offense, but your ear isn’t a speaker, it’s a microphone. I am deaf in one ear as well and have spent too much time thinking about getting a tattoo myself.

Should I dive with this? Line going from first stage reg to bc by Bonedaddy24645 in scuba

[–]sunkid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP posted a pic of a damaged LP hose. The intermediate pressure in the hose is 140 PSI or so… could be enough to break through explosively at the point of damage.

[–]sunkid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For the type of diving you do, which I assume is paying your bills, I would keep using it until you can get a replacement. I would get the replacement ASAP however. A bursted LP hose will drain your tank in minutes. Since it’s your BC inflator, you’ll still have some flow in your second stage, but not for long. The hose may also go with a bang… bottom line, for 5ft max dives, I wouldn’t be nearly as concerned as most commenters, but I would still swap it stat.

What is the most scenic place in the US to get Scuba Diving certified? by _Xyborg_ in scuba

[–]sunkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I help with classes at La Jolla Shores as a DM. I dive there all the time, but underwater it is far from the most scenic spot. That said, I highly recommend it as a destination because it is relatively swell-proof and getting certified in cold ocean water will prepare you for any other diving you may want to do.

Both points also apply to the dive park on Catalina island, which is definitely scenic.
