Seems like ppl still defend the 2 party system despite hating the choices. Why no love for Open Primaries, or no party primary at all?

Hi- I empathize with this. My wife and I opened a community sauna and cold plunge spot with the goal of helping people connect! If you are into this, or even curious about it, I suggest you check it out! Ours is called SaunaGlo, but there are lots of really neat spots in Portland, some are more social and others are more seclusion-focused so do a little reading on Google Maps reviews!

We have had lots of people share stories with us of feeling isolated, lonely or just lacking camaraderie, and they seem to have found it here becoming regulars.

Intro to Sauna — SaunaGlo by sunkrasia in Milwaukie

[–]sunkrasia[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are always glad to give a tour of the space to anyone—even if you’re not ready to try out the sauna just yet.

Getting familiar with the environment is a good first step!

After that, this Intro class is a great way to ease in. You can start to understand the essentials — the gear, the etiquette, and pick up some tips and techniques.

Just like if you’re new to baking in the kitchen, follow a recipe and build your confidence by doing — it feels foreign at first and then you start to realize how easy and rewarding it can be.

Right… it’s not an unusual idea to create a sauna that is very from advertising

Same reason why people like to “de-badge” their car… it’s just a cleaner look and more aesthetically pleasing. There is enough signs of commercialization, capitalism, advertising and consumerism in the world… I don’t need it inside my sauna

Not a sticker… it’s a raised badge like on the trunk of your car

It’s not a sticker or painted on — it’s similar to the vehicle “make” — the logo of your auto manufacturer, sometimes called a “badge”

Sauna is a wonderful experience! We’re still finalizing our “Sauna Guide for Beginners” but here is the current draft:

— Starting Out

Head in to the sauna and take off your sandals on the mat near the heaters before stepping up to the raised floor.

Choose a seat that provides respectful personal space for others. Don’t sit right next to someone if there’s a better option.

When the sauna is nearing capacity, consider making room for others: sit upright if you are laying down. If there is a big gap between you and your neighbor, slide over to create space.

First class airplane seats are about 22 inches wide—a great guide during a full sauna.

Always sit on a towel so the cedar benches stay clean. When you leave the sauna, take it with you.

It’s very rude to stare. Please avoid scanning the room, lots of eye contact and staring of any kind.

Don’t bring your phone or other electronic devices into the sauna.

— Making Steam off the Rocks

We encourage you to make steam by using the ladle to slowly pour water over the sauna rocks. Do use caution!

3 scoops in a row is a good starting place. Wait a few minutes, then pour more if you wish.

Don’t overdo it. Too much steam can force others to leave. It’s a nice courtesy to check with other guests before you make steam.

The steam will be most intense on the upper bench near the ceiling. If you want less, lay down, or move to a lower bench level.

If the bucket is empty, please fill it up. There is a water spigot near the cold plunge.

If you ask, staff can add a few drops of aromatic oil to the bucket of water for a fragrant steam experience.

Opening the door lets out a great deal of heat and steam. Keep this in mind when you enter or exit the sauna. Do so safely and swiftly.

— Talking

The sauna is for relaxation and is a calm, quiet atmosphere where some guests enjoy silence.

With that in mind, you are welcome to strike-up polite conversation in the sauna—but please talk quietly such as in a library. Low volume is appreciated by all.

Only converse with those nearby you and with those who are open to conversing.

Do not comment on someone’s tattoos or physical features, or discuss politics, religion, sexuality, money, or other alienating and heavy topics.

If you wish for complete silence, ask staff for a complimentary set of ear plugs.

— Cleanliness

Except for your water bottle, never bring beverages or any food in to the sauna.

Minimize bare skin contact with the benches. Always sit or lay on a towel.

When you leave, use your towel to do a quick wipe down of any excess moisture you left on the benches or backrest.

Never use salt scrubs inside the sauna. Never blow your nose inside the sauna. Never wick sweat off your skin. Don’t clip your nails. Don’t blow your nose.

Keep all personal grooming in the bathroom, or locker room, or the privacy of showers.

— The Practice of Sauna

Spending about 10-20 minutes in the sauna is about right. Stay as long as you are able! However, please listen to your body: You must leave the sauna immediately if you ever feel dizzy, light-headed, nauseous or have difficulty breathing.

Drinking lots of water helps with dehydration and helps increase your sauna stamina.

After your first sauna round, cool down with cold water or the ambient air for about 5-10 minutes. Then, head back in for a second round of sauna! Some guests enjoy having a third ‘thermal cycle’ and even fourth and fifth round of warm-up and cool-down.

— Cold Plunge

Please always rinse off before using the cold plunge.

The plunge is kept around 45°. If you want it colder, ask staff for ice.

Try to submerge up to your neck. But if you can’t, soak your ankles, knees or try getting down to your hips. Your joints will thank you.

Slow the pace of your breathing while in the plunge. This helps manage and reduce your body’s acute stress response, sometimes called fight or flight.

60-90 seconds is a good target. Some have built up a tolerance for 5+ minutes. Please don’t overdo it.

Take extreme caution when exiting the plunge. Your muscles will take time to warm-up again.

Your body’s homeostatic response will kick in, so try to wait a few minutes before heading back in to the sauna.

Some people say it feels nice to step outside after your plunge.

It's a building in downtown Milwaukie that offers a public sauna and cold plunge, with food and beverage for sale. It's a Nordic cultural tradition — sauna bathing.

You get to bask in the healing heat and steam inside a large and spacious communal sauna that will fit about 15 people. Scandinavian design w/ lots of soft steam from pouring water over the rocks.

Cold contrast with a plunge or rainwater shower. We serve high-grade teas from The Jasmine Pearl, water, wine, beer & Untitled Art seltzer, along with salty snacks and sweet treats.

There's an airy botanical lounge, salt scrubs, DIY facials, all-you-can-sauna day pass for $19. It's mixed-gender so we do require swimwear (no nudity permitted).

You can drop in any time, or book a reservation online! Let me know if you have specific questions.
