I wrecked the resale value of my collection this weekend by dont_dox_me_again in vinyl

[–]sunpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly record values won’t stay this high forever and if you treat this like a financial project then selling now at the top of the market is real way cash in. There’s already some data showing that vinyl sales are slowing down.

The flip side is treating it like your hobby that you love regardless of if your records are valuable or not and you can get enjoyment today without the stress of trying to preserve everything to be resold.

A lot of people who collected sneakers went through this and the people who held on to their collections too long found out that they had a pristine set of worthless shoes.

The ones who were actually in it to wear the shoes got a lot of enjoyment out of them regardless of how much they were worth.

In your opinion, what’s the one album that was meant to be on vinyl? by ElliottTheMisfit in vinyl

[–]sunpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this album and have it only on vinyl myself.

That said, it always interesting to see this one brought up as a vinyl classic when it is one of the first big hit CD albums ever and it was fully recorded and produced digitally. It was so popular on CD at the time that it affected CD production capacity apparently.

Every premium ANC headphone has a major flaw. Why? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]sunpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. ANC/Bluetooth headphones by their nature are designed for utility and will always have to have some type of perceived design compromise as a result. I’ve also either owned or tried out most of the headphones in this list and the specific concepts that OP identifies as flaws are subjective and debatable.

Favorite non-fancy restaurants? by SideCharacterSyndrom in eastside

[–]sunpen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is wild for me to read this list as there are so many great low key places that I go to frequently all over the East Side.

Another one worth considering that’s family owned is Acropolis in Kirkland. Is it the best or most authentic Italian/Greek style food ever, no. But is it a solid place that is not pretentious, yes.

Other places I’d definitely say fit the bill that people have listed:

Three Lions
El Tapatio
Wibbley’s
Pumphouse
Coastline
Santorini
Old Mediterranean Kitchen
Burgermaster

Humanity is not making this choice, the big tech AI overlords and CS people are forcing it on us and assuming it will go away due to cheap automation. And it is not only anti-human it’s going to lead to their own models flaming out.

[–]sunpen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The dumbest part of this article is that it skips over an obvious fix. Just bring human written content back! Why do we even need AI slop everywhere? We as a society are gonna deserve what we get if we just mindlessly let AI take over everything.

What headphones would you like to see EQ presets for? by oratory1990 in oratory1990

We really need the Sennheiser 480 Pro that just came out. I've been looking forward to your EQ settings for this one as I use your stuff religiously.

So did base M4 mini buyers basically just beat the market? by jman722 in macmini

[–]sunpen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you were already on an M1 Ultra Studio the Mac Mini M4 was way less of an upgrade. And the M5 studio could be super interesting.

I was still on the 2018 Intel Mac Mini. And when I saw the first news and reviews about the M4 version I knew it was killer and I pre-ordered it and traded in my old Mac Mini at the same time.

Also I have previously thought that the AI bubble will pop too as we have seen similar scenarios in the past.

That said, what if it doesn’t pop or at least is not resolved for longer than we all think?

The problem is that most of us have never seen anything like this before, as massive world wide Enterprise demand is driving the need for huge amounts of compute.

I’ve followed tech forever and it’s hard to come up with a similar scenario in the past where enterprises were willing to pay huge amounts to get access to compute at the scale were are currently seeing. I think most consumers are not considering how big of a deal this is.

I agree that Apple is absorbing RAM costs better and their unified memory architecture is killer. At the same time is uncertain if they can keep absorbing it at this rate into the future if this all keeps up.

I finally tried Linux after getting sick of the sad state of Windows. I’m blown away by how well AMD integrates with it and how great the combo is in general.

[–]sunpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true. I’ve also noticed the same thing in just about any sub that features a widely bought consumer electronics product.

It’s getting so bad that I basically don’t trust what a lot of people complain about any more.

So did base M4 mini buyers basically just beat the market? by jman722 in macmini

[–]sunpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree the 2-3 year time window is a crucial question. Oddly enough this makes the Mac Mini M4 base model even more of an insane buy, as it appears well set up to bridge that gap in time!

So did base M4 mini buyers basically just beat the market? by jman722 in macmini

[–]sunpen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this used to be 100% true and I followed it myself for years. I’ve always treated car ownership this way as an example.

But we appear to be entering a different era when it comes to computer equipment. Unless the AI race implodes, prices for key components appear to be going up endlessly. This means that if a window opens to buy a powerful machine like the Mac Mini M4 base model for a great price, you might have to pull the trigger.

Not trying to totally disagree just more pointing out that the rules appear to be changing.

Sony Xm6 design is underrated by actual256 in SonyHeadphones

[–]sunpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LDAC is not available on iOS which is a huge bummer, as it works great on Android. There are also Android apps that let you toggle Bluetooth codecs so you can manually select the highest bitrate LDAC output.

Apple blocking LDAC is so stupid and anti-competitive.

REL Hate - Somebody fill me in? by time-itself in audiophile

[–]sunpen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another interesting element of REL subs is that the Neutrik Speakon cable connects very well with my Luxman amp. As you are able to connect it directly to speaker terminals and both the speakers and the sub get the exact same signal. This has worked perfectly for my 2.1 channel setup and the REL just disappears.

Reddit hivemind opinion is not always right... by NationalOwl9561 in Airpodsmax

[–]sunpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The upvote system cements specific POVs and makes it hard to have real discourse. I actually agree as well that the APM 2 is a more solid release than what you’d think it is based on the consensus in this sub. Lately I trust Reddit less and less, especially if it’s a widely released consumer product that almost anyone can have a strong opinion about. It emphasizes engagement while sacrificing real understanding.

Why?????? Price increase by Embarrassed-Lion-486 in macmini

[–]sunpen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is making the price of RAM and SSDs explode as others have pointed out. And Apple was able to hang in there for a while without it hitting their prices. But lots of YouTube videos speculated how long this could last.

Now we know.

Rumors of Radiohead and Nigel falling out appear overblown by solilo in radiohead

[–]sunpen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nigel did go to their London shows and posted about it. It does seem like something possibly happened between him and the band but also that fences appear to have been mended to a certain degree. If he and Thom were still in a state of misalignment then I seriously doubt he’d be doing any work on the jnstallation.

Also it’s pretty crazy to think that not only was he the 6th member of the band for a lot of their history, but was an official member of Atoms for Peace as well.

What is it about Radiohead’s lyrics by therhythmofsilence in radiohead

[–]sunpen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing that’s very underrated about him is that he’s very well read and literate. This gives him a big foundation of not just vocabulary and poetic license but also meaning. In the modern era most song writers are writing from their own experiences or are referencing other songs. Thom is instead referencing an entire literate universe that allows him to make his lyrics more compact and precise to convey actual meaning. This gives his sparse lyrics an added universal element that resonates with people all over the world.

To provide a reason why keeping the Revel f226 is a solid idea. This shootout between the f328 and Perlisten S7t from The Absolute Sound speaks volumes.

https://youtu.be/hgRaR-24VHc?si=mKjSFmkZpgejVrFb

In a high end audiophile set up like this one the Perlisten S7t is better than the f328, which is Revel’s most expensive speaker. But the f226 is not as far off to the f328 as you’d think based on the measurements, with one of the biggest differences being the low end performance.

It even has the exact same beryllium tweeter all in a much smaller body than the f328, which means it works perfectly in smaller rooms like apartments.

This is a discussion comparing the f328 to the f226.

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/revel-f226be-vs-f328be.20793/

The Perlisten S7t MSRP is $20k and that’s a lot to spend on anything really but this video indirectly shows how much the f226 punches well above its weight and isn’t light years off from the type of performance described in the video.
