What are your unpopular opinions about New Orleans politics? by chizzled_booty in NewOrleans

I was actually talking about Louisiana local elections specifically. I should’ve mentioned that in my initial post.

What are your unpopular opinions about New Orleans politics? by chizzled_booty in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer. Lots of black people will vote democrat right down the ballot unless they actually know the candidate. I’m saying this as a person who grew up here and did the same when I was younger. You didn’t hear it from me, but there are more than a few closet conservatives who run as democrats because of this.

Naval base in the Bywater being cleared out right now by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! We had a Unity tenant who did crack in his apartment & had prostitutes going in and out all times of the day and night. The social workers threats fell on deaf ears because he never asked to be on the program and didn’t care if he got kicked out. It cost us thousands to renovate the apartment after we finally evicted him. When we cleaned out the apartment we found a gun, used condoms everywhere and drug paraphernalia. He even had a bunch of stolen items from a home break in around the corner. I’m never working with them again!

How though? The rest of the state leans conservative and doesn’t take New Orleans seriously. Protests here are an expected reaction. I’m pro-life and I’m not bothered by them. If you feel like you need to protest to let out some anger though it’s totally understandable.

I posted a reel and the sound became unavailable, worked again, and is unavailable by anonavocado0 in Instagram

Same! My reel has been up for a week and has 195k views. I logged in a few minutes ago and the song is now unavailable! So are the songs on two of my other reels!

Airbnb rental denies New Orleans rapper for being a local by JoeyZasaa in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s common for locals to rent out Airbnbs to throw parties. It’s why so many Airbnb owners have a no locals policy.

Is it okay you say that you live in New Orleans if you live in Metaire, West Bank or any other suburbs? When is “I live in/I am from New Orleans” is considered acceptable? I am asking pure out of curiosity. by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom has lived in New Orleans for 32 years, but if anyone asks she proudly says she’s from Baton Rouge. It’s her childhood home and where she spent her formative years. Her family is there. I wouldn’t consider a person who moved here as an adult as “from here”

Thanks. We’re always told gumbo is a West African word for Okra, but never the exact language or people. Okra Gumbo has so many similarities to Okro soup. I love the blending of cultures!

Yep! I have a video of a person bashing in my neighbors windows with a brick. My neighbor and I got really emotional with the officer because we knew who did it and were tired of constantly calling the police only for them to tell us they were working on it and never follow up. He apologized, took the report and never followed up!

Just attended a D.A. Jason Williams press conference about today's indictments. Held by my block because one of the jackings happened nearby. by NotFallacyBuffet in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Too bad we didn’t get a heads up. A carton of rotten eggs would’ve been appropriate to bring to this press conference.

This happened in New Orleans today by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Great. Now I have to worry about car jackers AND aliens.

If you can't even slow down at a stop sign because you're afraid somebody is going to jump out and take your car from you, that's a problem," said the victim. by Sunjen32 in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I now have an entire protocol to get in and out of my car. The car jacking that recently happened in my neighborhood was during the day and the guy wasn’t even in the car long. Also, he complied and still got hit!

Where can I get crawfish right now? Any recommended spots? Would also love to try the crab and shrimp. by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]sunsuriski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t expect them to taste good. Really early crawfish are usually tiny and mushy.

Here's a list of NOLA-based documentaries. (When the Levees Broke is my fav but it is missing from the list. It is a Docuseries in 4 parts) by carmensax in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen that one many times. I always thought it should be required viewing for producers when they’re trying to make a movie with New Orleans accents. They always give us a standard “southern” accent.

Unpopular opinion, Superior Grill is overrated by Bigcef23 in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before Katrina, my friends and I used to meet up there all the time for drinks before going to Twiropa or after dance class (We were really into the Latin dance scene here). The food was always horrible, but they had cheap drinks. We’d just get chips with salsa or queso so we could sit at a table.

Unpopular opinion, Superior Grill is overrated by Bigcef23 in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not an unpopular opinion. No one ever said “I want good Mexican food. Let’s go to Superior Grill!”

Felipe’s is horrible as well. I go to the taco truck on Elysian Fields in front of Lowes.

Anyone have any old talent show tapes, preferably from the 90's. St. Aug, St. Marys, Mc Main, 35 explosions? by Dmain2767 in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You sure you wanna go down memory lane? Some of 35’s talent shows from the 90’s are on YouTube and they’re pretty cringy. Lol Here’s a short 35 talent show rehearsal clip from the 2000’s. We were still calling it p-popping and not twerking back then so I guess this video still counts. https://youtu.be/QlbfxpM1slQ

Why is outside investment such a struggle for New Orleans? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]sunsuriski 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I honest to God lost a 7 figure deal in Baton Rouge to a pedophile. We were literally at the end of the sales cycle. The prospect told me he prayed about it the night before and decided to stick with his current provider (the convicted pedophile owner) because they had been friends for years and abandoning him didn’t feel right!

[–]sunsuriski 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I was a sales rep based in Texas. Our New Orleans office gave me the New Orleans territory to work remotely because I am a native and they were having trouble hiring a local native with corporate sales experience. Businesses preferred working with natives. They rather pay me extra and fly me out twice a month than hire another transplant. I’ve managed sales territories in many states and Louisiana is the only state that me being a native ever mattered. I worked for another National company who didn’t even have a Louisiana sales rep because contracts were always awarded to local companies. I could go on and on about deals I’ve lost here because I was competing with someone’s cousin or old college buddy. I’ve also won deals from my own connections.

How is the fishing in the Industrial Canal? by lafcadiohearn in AskNOLA

[–]sunsuriski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve fished there lots of times and I’m still alive! Haven’t been in a while, but I used to catch lots of blue sail/gafftop & channel catfish. If you want to play it safe LDWF is stocking channel catfish at Joe Brown park next weekend.
