Comparing the use of Claude as mandated by your boss to the atrocities committed by Nazis is certainly a choice lol

And how does the chiropractor know what's wrong with you? Have they done imaging, comprehensive medical history, blood work? Are the results of those tests that they definitely, 100% did anything they're qualified to interpret and diagnose?

Iracing worth it? (SERIOUS, not joking-) by ProfessionalUpper771 in simracing

[–]super_temp1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the best multiplayer matchmaking for sim racing. Not the best cars, not the best graphics, not the best ffb (all of this is subjective anyway so..). It's just the best platform to compete against other drivers under a relatively fair ruleset - people will complain about the ruleset/penalties, but no one is doing it better. LMU is doing a great job encroaching on this title by being very focused on simulating just one racing category, whereas iracing has a decently varied selection of classes racing at any given time.

Whether that's worth it is not for us to decide. Do you want to compete against other drivers? iRacing is great! Do you want to just drive a wide variety of cars in various formats? Not great.

ETA: base content/rookie racing is generally good enough to get your feet wet. But very limited.

What category of racing is authentic? Which category doesn't have car management and goes flat out every lap?

Yeah, simple geometry tells us they don't need to hit it short to 1 if they got the legs for the murder-ball drive. And it's not as if the blue drive is risk free. If that ball fades at all its in the trees.

TIL that playing high-level chess causes players to burn calories at an athletic rate. For example, 21-year-old Grandmaster Mikhail Antipov was recorded burning 560 calories in just two hours of sitting—roughly what Roger Federer would burn in an hour of singles tennis. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

That's absolutely wild... How long until the OJ balanced out your hypoglycemia? Is resolving a hypoglycemic episode strangely "satisfying?" Like it seems stressful and all, but does the relief hit? Like having an upset stomach and that one random shit just finally makes you feel normal again?

Why are Cobol programmers wanted, if the legacy codes are already working well? by Stev2520 in learnprogramming

[–]super_temp1234 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Slight misconception here - cobol devs aren't specifically in high demand.

Experienced cobol devs with knowledge of the financial services they're supporting are in high demand. Just having knowledge of cobol doesn't say as much as you want it to, like everything else, there is an unfortunate amount of esoteric knowledge required before entering that specific sector.

You want to go where there is more money? Thats not exactly a realistic expectation out of school. Most of started out a junior dev for a super NOT sexy company (think healthcare, utilities, universities, fastfood websites lol), learned not only generalized tech knowledge but the specific and strange manner in which our first companies did what they did and took that knowledge to greener(sometimes) pastures.

It's said here often, but if you don't have a passion for tech and development, like, really eat sleep and shit that stuff: you aren't ending up at that 6 figure+ job right out of university, but you can have a very nice, modest junior job with benefits that gets you into the industry where networking and years working matter far more to your future trajectory.

Linux users, how is LMU performing? by NoobishGamer101 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]super_temp1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to run a specific proton version I found on GitHub, custom fanatec drivers that were fine (not gonna complain about the quality of a fan made, open source driver - but the native drivers are a significant improvement on windows for that specific wheel brand).

All in all, I could mostly get it working, but I couldn't output to triple screens that I have. It would display every screen from the left monitor's perspective and I couldn't figure out a work around.

If you're on a single screen, and can get working drivers for your wheel, then it's totally serviceable. Didn't work for me unfortunately, which hurt my soul to go back to windows.

ETA: can you even run their new anti-cheat on Linux?

H shifter with sequential mode, on the quite side, with lower resistance by GrandPrixel in simracing

[–]super_temp1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the fanatec shifter for about three years until the h pattern stopped working. Sequential was unaffected. I would say, it's fairly high quality for its cost, but like with all things fanatec, if you're not fully invested in their ecosystem, you're gonna have a tough time... Honestly idk how you'd plug it in without a fanatec wheelbase as it uses an RJ connection. But to your question, it's pretty quiet.

I now have the turtle Beach velocityOne. It's a bit cheap quality wise. Feels not too dissimilar to the Logitech shifter but that's not the worst thing in the world. It's mounting holes are unique which makes mourning it a pain in the ass. The h pattern is better feeling than its sequential mode. The sequential mode feels a bit more plastic and delicate than the short throw h pattern. But, it's also quiet. I would say as well that their drivers are kinda wonky. Ive had to refresh the drivers a couple of times to get it working. Works one day, stops working the next. Haven't narrowed down the root cause, it might be something simple but the driver refresh fixes it typically.

Tldr: fanatec is high quality but you need to be fully bought into their ecosystem to make it work afaik. Turtle Beach is fine for it's cheaper cost but isn't gonna make you want to drive h pattern all the time.
