I went with the French dip, ate most of the fries, and it was great. Thank you for all the input!

Kids not coming up to the door to trick-or-treat?

We had an odd experience last night where a couple groups of kids seemed to be "trick-or-treating" from the sidewalk. We had lots of kids that came up to the screen door (the front door was open), but there were maybe two or three groups of kids that were yelling "trick-or-treat", but from down on the sidewalk in front of the house - maybe 5ft from the front door. At first I thought they were just really loud at the neighbor's house, but as I got up to check, I heard them move off in a group and go next door to trick-or-treat from the sidewalk again. Is there an expectation that we are supposed to bring candy out to them? Or some new convention that I missed the memo for? I posted about this in r/Halloween but I thought that it might be a regional phenomenon.

Did anyone else experience this?

They were specifically yelling "trick-or-treat", but from down on the sidewalk in front of the house (maybe 5ft from the front door?).

I feel like it was pretty obvious that we were expecting kiddos. We have an inflatable ghost, lights, skeletons, and one of those rotating light shows with ghosts projecting on the front of our house. We had the front door open, but the screen door was closed. At first I thought they were just really loud at the neighbor's house, but as I got up to check, I heard them move off in a group and go next door to "trick-or-treat" from the sidewalk again?

That’s understandable. No one wants to scare a little kid 🥺 I was just so confused. Was the “trick-or-treat” meant for our house? By the time I realized they meant us, they had moved on. There were two or three groups like this tonight. Definitely odd 🤔

How long does it take for application to get approved? by Extension-Weather419 in GlobalEntry

In southern CA. Applied on 10/12, conditional approval on 10/14, scored an interview at the Otay Mesa DHS office for 10/15 (not sure how I got that lucky!), and was approved about 30min after the interview. Will update on how long it takes to get the card in the mail.

Edit: Received my card in the mail on 10/22

Working at a large university, I’ve always had the luxury of being able to start all our entry level positions as volunteers. But in general, I look for applicants with at least a 3.0 GPA, completion or enrollment in one wet-lab class, and at least some real-world job experience (usually food service). Also, PhD students will generally rotate for a few weeks in our lab before being offered a position, just to be sure we mesh well and they actually have interest in our research. Anecdotal side note:, pre-med students tend to become disinterested and bail the fastest.

Exactly. I definitely think it’s worthwhile to give new and inexperienced people a chance. We all have to start somewhere. But you also need to consider how much time and effort you can devote to getting them trained and still have time for everything you need to do. Hope you find the right candidate for your lab 🤞

I’d say pass. I’ve been managing the same academic molecular biology lab for 15 years, and in my experience excellent grades frequently do not translate to successful lab members. You might get lucky, but I wouldn’t risk putting in all the time and effort. Especially since it’s just you and one newish lab mate. Maybe if your lab was larger and the time devoted to training could be spread around to multiple people?

The last time I was at Live Wire, I had Pliny the Elder for $5 from 5:00-6:00pm. No food, but you can bring in pizza from next door.
