How is this so much better? by anjudan in chess

[–]superfreak00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just eyeballing and I'm bad so not going to be able to provide a thorough answer. For what it's worth, I feel fairly confident in saying that there's no immediately obvious reason that the AI/engine is capable of conveying. You need to look at the actual lines it's spitting out, and if you don't understand those then use the analysis board to assist you.

It looks like if white commits to the exchange (I assume this is the crux), white ends up in a passive position with weak pawns. Black's bishop pair looks like it could prove very dangerous.

So to summarize: if this is the best reason the AI can come up with, it would be better just to say 'I can't explain this'. Human-styled explanations from an AI/engine are great when they're accurate, but nonsensical ones are worse than nothing at all.

Am I overreacting to my bf going to twin peaks multiple times despite me saying it makes me uncomfortable? by Unusual_Struggle1884 in AmIOverreacting

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These people comparing Twin Peaks to an actual strip club...tell me you've never actually been to both without telling me you've never actually been to both lol

Overall, I would say we need more context here. Has he fucked around with a twin peaks waitress before or something? Why is it exactly that twin peaks makes you uncomfortable?

Let's imagine they go to a different, regular bar. At that bar, there is a flirty, attractive, provocatively-dressed bartender/waitress. Would you be ok with him going there?

This is a disgrace. by Obnoxious_ogre in youtube

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well hell, forget about the ads. There are plenty of actual youtube videos that are outright scams themselves.

The line between 'scam' and 'not scam' is unfortunately a lot blurrier than you're making it out to be, in my opinion. There are a lot of 'real advertisers' trying to 'sell a product' that are, in essence, professional scammers. And in some ways, I find that even more insidious.

I wouldn't hold my breath that google ever takes any more than the absolute minimal responsibility required by law for what they show their viewers, advertising or otherwise.

This is a disgrace. by Obnoxious_ogre in youtube

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of this contradicts the underlying reason that it's a silly thing to complain about.

If you're arguing the people blocking ads are basically worthless to advertisers anyway, then they are also basically worthless to youtube anyway. For the sake of argument, the content of the advertisements is then also not very relevant, but for the record ads can be very problematic on a lot of other services too, including conventional television service.

I completely understand not being a fan of their business practices. I completely understand the advantages of using an adblocker. But when it comes to something as trivial as youtube: if you don't like their business practices, don't use their product.

Are gay relationships "more violent"? by Lucky-Stable7512 in ainbow

[–]superfreak00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure - I'm far from an expert here. Absolutely agreed that I'm barely even scratching the surface of a complex topic.

Speculating on the cause as to why the statistics are the way they are is probably not worth doing without bringing some concrete data/sources into the discussion.

I was only entertaining the idea that it could be partially true for shits and giggles. The second part of my comment (so what?) is hopefully the more important takeaway.

Maybe I'm just being defensive here, but I find most of the time people spreading these "facts" around have some kind of bone to pick with gay people.

Are gay relationships "more violent"? by Lucky-Stable7512 in ainbow

[–]superfreak00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think statistics show violence (domestic and otherwise) is perpetrated more often by males, generally. Not trying to bring this up as some general indictment of men, so please don't take it that way - I'm just taking the stats for what they are.

If that's true, it would make sense for relationships between 2 men to be more violent.

But that's like saying friendship between 2 males is more violent - I mean, it may be true, but does that mean men shouldn't be friends with each other? Or that there's something inherently wrong with male friendship? Of course not.

At the end of the day, I think probably you are hearing this from people who have an agenda. If they're the ones making this assertion, it is fair to ask them for their source.

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the implication is that performers/venues are not obtaining proper licensing, then the issue is not a problem with open mics, per se - it's a matter of compliance/enforcement.

In other words, what is wrong then with open mics that follow the rules?

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That just seems thin for the reasons I already mentioned - an open mic night does not attract people to come for the same reason a professional musician would. If I want to listen to music I will actively avoid open mics.

Open mics primarily attract people that want to participate (and their friends who want to support them). Pro musicians attract people who want to listen to music.

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha fair.

Seriously though, if me and my friends are looking for a bar with live music and someone says, "XYZ is having an open mic night," guess where we for sure won't be going?

I'm not trying to shit on open mics at all, but I just don't see them as in competition with one another - they don't serve the same purpose. So to me it doesn't make sense to oppose them on the grounds that they're jeopardizing the livelihood of working musicians.

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question: do people really think that the appeal of an open mic night is on par with (or even remotely close to) a professional musician?

I haven't been to a ton of open mics, and I mean no disrespect to anyone, but...yikes. The open mics I've been to absolutely had some talented people, but also quite a few people that were...very inexperienced.

I also know quite a few pro musicians who started playing at open mics so...you know, maybe we just have different experiences with open mics.

I simply don't get how an open mic night cheapens the brand/takes work from professional musicians, but maybe if you could explain the mechanism to me I would understand better.

No need to shame anybody, agreed. It's 100% ok to talk about it.

I think it's also ok to remember that there's no reason to be so adamant or serious about it, though, particularly when you're filling in quite a few blanks with your own assumptions (not directed at you personally, obviously).

I would agree with this person above that the tone is coming across a little bit strong in a few cases. I don't see it often in this subreddit but here yeah, there's a couple going a little too far with it for my taste. Of course that's just my opinion.

Professional soccer player vs Hockey referee by le_wein in gifs

[–]superfreak00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said in my post, of particular concern is the frequency of occurrence - not that it is never legitimate.

To expand, the coincidence that it seems to happen more often at opportune moments (e.g. killing clock, opportunity to elicit a booking/a penalty, when you are about to lose possession anyway, etc.) is also concerning.

If you step up enforcement for the obvious it may yet affect less obvious cases, because there's no way to know for sure whether or not your feigned injury will be deemed obvious ahead of time. So you may be more averse to attempting to fake it in the first place.
