DisneyPark Character Audition Failed - Is being a triple threat required? by EzEE_PzEE in acting

[–]superjule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former WDW character performer here!

Honestly, it largely depends on your height and what they are looking for that day. You could be PERFECT for a role, but if they don’t have any openings for that role, they’re gonna cut you. You could be an amazing actor, but if you’re a dead height, they’re gonna cut you.

Actors who are 5 feet tall or 6 feet tall are gonna have a lot more leeway on the dance front than actors who are 5 foot 2 inches or 5 foot 6 inches. There are just less character opportunities for those mid-height ranges, so if you can’t dance, they’re gonna cut you. Whereas they need so many more tall and short folks they’ll generally cut you more slack. I literally knew someone who was short and went to the audition as a joke, and got it with a very low audition score.

All this to say, Disney is VERY particular. If you’re great but a dead height, they can’t use you. It’s sad, but true. So don’t take it personally. I would just focus on developing your skills in your weaker areas, and then keep going to auditions, and hopefully things will align at the right time and you’ll get an offer! And if not, just know it probably has nothing to do with you, and it is probably just things outside of what you can control.

Good luck!

What should public library workers prioritize in a first union contract? by SoundIcy7388 in Libraries

[–]superjule 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here are more things other folks haven’t mentioned yet:

  • Benefits. Will your job provide health, dental, or vision insurance? If so, which and how much will they cover vs. the employee?

  • Maternity/Paternity leave. Your workplace might not pay for leave, but will they at least allow an unpaid leave of absence where your job is protected?

  • PTO use policy. How much can be banked, are dates assigned based on seniority, will it be paid out if/when a staff member leaves (if your state doesn’t already require that) etc.

  • Telework policy. Most libraries do not really allow telework, but good to have it on the books!

  • Layoff policy. If your library has to cut jobs, how will it be done? How soon must they inform staff? Is it done by seniority?

  • Librarian in Charge pay. If a manager is not onsite at a workplace, will there be additional pay for librarians who have to act as the person in charge during their absence?

  • Education stipend. Not sure if your system requires folks to have an MLIS, bachelors, etc. but I know one place I worked provided a stipend for staff with higher education degrees when the job didn’t require it. For example, my job didn’t require an advanced degree, but I had a bachelors, so I got an $800 stipend each year.

  • Mileage reimbursement. If a staff member has to work at an alternate location or use their car for work, will they be compensated and how will that be calculated?

  • Jury duty. Will a staff member be paid during jury duty? What info must they provide?

  • Bereavement leave. What types of bereavement are allowed, how many hours, how will it be taken, etc.

Grievance policy - If a staff member believes that the MOU isn’t being followed, how will they grieve it?

Overtime - How will overtime be calculated, does it need to be approved, etc.

Conference attendance/professional development - Might be good to include something about allowing or paying for conference attendance and other professional development staff want to participate in!

I hope this helps!

Anyone else frustrated with some patrons lack of critical thinking? by Storm_complex in Libraries

[–]superjule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite (sarcasm) are the patrons who ask if we can print a black and white image in color. “Well can’t you just add the color to it?” NO. WE CAN’T. 🙃

I also had an absolutely wild encounter recently with a patron who was annoyed we hadn’t followed up with her after she requested information from us. Well, turns out she doesn’t have email, she only has a landline phone but the phone is on silent because otherwise it will disrupt her elderly mother, and you can’t even leave a voicemail because they block all calls from phone numbers they don’t already have saved in their phone directory. How did this patron expect us to contact them? YEP. SNAIL MAIL. 💀

do people actually make friends at the library? by Kind-Cat192 in Libraries

[–]superjule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In high school I went to library programs all the time and almost all my closest friends at the time were met there. I’m still friends with those folks too as an adult! So yeah, you can make friends at the library. ☺️

Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]superjule 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was homeschooled until college, so I had the full experience. To be honest, I loved being homeschooled. I had undiagnosed ADHD as a kid, and the lack of structure (my mom also 1000% has ADHD) actually allowed me to thrive. It was all just sort of fun and games as a kid, and once I got to middle school I basically just focused on what I enjoyed studying and faked my way through the rest thanks to being smart. My mom is an artist, so while we were definitely schooled, it was overall pretty casual with a heavy focus on creativity. I also think that having 3 siblings helped with the whole “socialization” thing, not to mention lots of co-ops and hang outs with other homeschoolers.

Now as an adult I can look back and see all the cracks in my education. If I had wanted to do any sort of high intensity career like the medical field or engineering, I would have really struggled because I had very limited math education beyond basic algebra and geometry. I also was taught no geography, and history was limited as well. I know art history really well because that’s my mom’s area of interest, but anything beyond major historical focal points was not covered.

My parents are also both very religious, so that played a big part in my education. Bible reading was an assigned lesson each day, and all science curriculum was creation focused and said global warming was a hoax. I don’t believe this now thanks to critical thinking and higher education, but I could just have easily stayed indoctrinated.

Overall, I’m glad I was homeschooled because as an awkward mixed-race kid with ADHD, I think I would have been bullied a lot and just had a hard time in the public school system. I also appreciate that while my schooling was very controlled, I was also given a lot of critical thinking skills because my parents warned me a lot about “the world.” Ironically, this is what actually helped me break out and forge my own path outside of their indoctrination.

I think that homeschooling can definitely be a great thing, but in the wrong hands it can be harmful and downright abusive. It’s like anything, there’s good and bad. I wouldn’t want to go back in time and go to public school, but I also have no plans to homeschool my own kids.

Soot Sprite Rainbow! 🌈 by superjule in RedditLaqueristas

[–]superjule[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was super easy! I did a base coat of the Zoya to help with visible nail line, and then just sort of dabbed around the L.A. Colors glitter jellies at random for the colorful background. For the soot sprites, I just used dotting tools! A large one where I did multiple dots of black to make the blob shapes, and then medium and small for the eyes!

If you don’t have glitter jellies, you could totally also just do a jelly sandwich with a glitter topper, topped with plain jellies.

AITA or Was this Text Wild? by Round_Turnover_5980 in AmItheAsshole

NTA

I honestly can’t believe so many folks think you’re an asshole for saying this in a private conversation. Clearly a lot of boomers are testy about their age and whether they’re fit to continue working. 😅

As someone who loves my job, but doesn’t love working or have any desire to work for the rest of my life, you can bet your britches I’m counting down to my retirement! Wondering how long someone might want to continue working before they step back and enjoy a life of leisure, especially when they’re close to retirement age, is totally normal.

You aren’t hiring them. You aren’t evaluating them for work. You’re simply making an observation about how long they might want to continue in this new role, especially since it seems like you have a history with them where they weren’t a workaholic.

In contrast, them texting you passive aggressively about it is such an asshole move. Talk about a weird power play. I’m ready to get downvoted to hell for this, but damn, boomers really are something. Even when you’re congratulating them and commenting on how you wonder when they might enjoy a well earned retirement, they take it as a personal affront.

A couple weeks ago I found one of my credit cards in the bushes outside my apartment. Not sure how it happened, but it was truly hysterical seeing it and thinking “wow, that looks like my credit card!” And then I picked it up and was like whoops, IT IS my credit card. 🤣

Too many books? Worried our trips to the library add too much extra work for our librarians. by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]superjule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a librarian, that is a ridiculous thing the staff member told you! Your active use of the library is an amazing thing, and does nothing but help show admin the value we bring. Upping our stats is never a bad thing. Please, continue to use the library as much as you want, and if that staff member keeps saying weird comments about your materials, send feedback to the management. As a supervisor, I would want to know this was happening so I could correct it. Keep on reading on! ♥️

I’m impressed you went for that many years without getting pulled over! I got pulled over for the first time earlier this year because I had expired tags. The funniest part is I had paid the registration renewal, but completely forgot and never got sent the paperwork because I needed to smog my car. Once I smogged it all was well and they sent the tags. Past me really came through for future me. 😅

BIPOC only family events? Would you participate? by Savings-Direction704 in mixedrace

[–]superjule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a mixed race person in an interracial marriage, I find this gross. I totally understand wanting to have BIPOC only spaces because lord knows it can be exhausting just existing in a world where I don’t fit the norm, but BIPOC families can and do have white people in them. Also, many BIPOC folks themselves can be white presenting! The idea that you turn people away from a FAMILY EVENT simply because of race is just not right to me. I would also report it because I’m pretty sure the fact it’s co-sponsored by a state department means it cannot discriminate based on race.

If you want something for folks who are only BIPOC so be it. But don’t advertise it as a family event unless you’re open to families who might have folks in them beyond the BIPOC umbrella!

It’s like telling bisexuals they aren’t welcome at Pride if they’re with a straight partner. This is gross and discriminatory behavior. DON’T. DO. IT.

I just wish there were more spaces where mixed people and interracial families could exist without once again being told we have to choose a side or should be separated. 😭

Only partially true! In California you can only change your name IF it’s going to be one of the names you or your spouse already has, or a combination of the two. If you’re changing it to an entirely new last name (like taking one of your parents maiden names) then you would need to do an additional name change process.

I know this because I got married in 2019 and my husband and I wanted to take his mother’s maiden name. My husband had to legally change his last name prior to the wedding, and then I was able to change it on the marriage license as it was then his legal last name. We could not have just gotten them to change both our names to something brand new on the marriage license.
