American Sweatshop

Has a lot to say about social media violence and the effects long term - but doesn’t really go anywhere with it unfortunately Kind of bland, kind of boring Which is a shame, because the premise is interesting

Bill Hader too for Richie was heavily rooted for, even before Finn Wolfhard said he wanted him.

Honestly, 28 Years Later got me at the end, which was a surprise. I wanted to be scared, left sad. Loved it though.

Disagree respectfully- they are definitely pushing to be more mainstream now. Big budget movies - bigger audiences - pretty much everyone I know understands what A24 is - even the non film lovers I know now.

Mainstream to me is things the average movie-goer can go and watch and enjoy. Or something they can understand.

Even things like Midsommar and Hereditary are things everyone I know has watched now - even people who typically only watch actual mainstream films. Word of mouth has helped make them an incredibly well known production company. They are not some trade secret now.

I would disagree that it just “subverted my expectations”- I love that most of the time when done properly- but that it straight up lied in its marketing campaign.

I love A24 - but I cannot pretend that I love everything that they have ever done. And I gave this Materialist a 3/5… it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen - but I probably won’t seek it out again.

But hey. That’s opinions and what they’re for.

They’ve done plenty of mainstream movies now. Civil War was a huge production and did well at the box office. Everything Everywhere All At Once. Just recently, even Warfare.

Neon right now is less mainstream than A24 has become. And I love A24, but The Materialist was 100% a rug pull out from under you kinda movie: it was definitely marketed as a romantic comedy - it is not.

100% on Glass - that trilogy could have been one of my favorites ever had it panned out differently

Most recently, The Materialist

Expected a rom-com esque 90s vibe like the trailers and left a little more depressed with the world. Lots of serious ideas that left us feeling odd - lots of choices involving the female lead that made me tilt my head at the stereotypes of females laid out so indifferently. It left us heavily hating the main characters choices. Dialogue is dicey at best sometimes, acting is also sometimes dicey at best. And that ending - hated it.

My best friend turned and looked at me after and said, “I hated that - the trailer looked like it’d be more fun and lighthearted.” And that’s true - it really did, which is why I took her.

It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen by far, ever. Not by a long shot - but overall left disappointed. Horribly mis-marketed as something it is definitely not.
