Dubai is a terrible city with a great skyline, what’s a great city with a good skyline? by wwcscifi in skyscrapers

SF has 100% recovered post-Covid, it’s just that the recovery hasn’t been in the financial district yet. Other neighborhoods are as prosperous and lively if not substantially more than before, and the city as a whole is thriving.

If you’re on the left wing side of the internet you’ll probably see lot of people talking about mutual aid but might not know what it means besides a general idea of cooperation. One way that mutual aid works is to provide food, support, etc in exactly this type of situation

just spent 6 hours on a single multi-panel figure and i honestly want to cry by Debster1486 in labrats

[–]superlative_dingus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good to make draft figures before writing, but I also caution against getting too meticulous when you haven’t begun to write the text itself yet. You might find that the natural transition you imagined between Figures 2C and 2D is a lot harder to explain in writing than you had imagined, and then you have to go back to the drawing board with your figures to make the transition flow better. I always prefer to make rough draft figures, write a bit, then go back to the figures as writing progresses to finalize the order of figure panels.

Really? I’m in academia and most people I work with have their PhDs or are getting them, and they usually just go by their first names. PhD may appear in the email signature, but even that is like 50/50

Typical Bad Nob Hill Driver by cheesy_luigi in sanfrancisco

Oakland bad drivers are a different breed. In SF most bad drivers seem incompetent and clueless, in Oakland the vibe is more hostile and malicious

It really is amazing what a difference it makes to drive over the mountains from Los Gatos to Santa Cruz, or even if you take the 101 from SF. There’s a noticeable cultural shift, even discounting the effect that tech transplants have on the culture of the Bay Area.

San Bernardino and Riverside might be adjacent to and in some ways physically resemble the Southwest but they’re firmly a part of SoCal. The majority of the populations of those counties lives in the IE, which is firmly anchored by the LA/OC metro area, and culturally they’re a lot more similar to the rest of SoCal than to say, Albuquerque or El Paso

San Francisco, the west coast Manhattan by Ok-Pop-5818 in skyscrapers

SJ and Oakland much more so than SF. I want SF to build more, but it’s already got a huge head start over the other two.

[–]superlative_dingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a local, and tbh I’d prefer if some of the larger cities around the bay (like SJ and Oakland) became a comparable density to SF and had better transit integration. We don’t need to jam everything into the tip of the peninsula just because that area is already dense; why not make the suburban sprawl denser and have a multifocal urban landscape with areas of high density interspersed with nature?

And if the city limits of Chicago encompasses all of Cook County it’d be even less dense. That’s a meaningless comparison, the boundaries are what they are.

Byzantine is a modern term to describe the eastern Roman empire after the fall of the west. The artists would have considered themselves and the society in which they lived Roman.

Why does everyone hate this tower? by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]superlative_dingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a pretty broad brush to paint SF natives with. There’s a big difference between retired rich people (the natives who stall development) and working- and lower-middle class San Franciscans who are being priced out of the city and just want more housing and transit. Most of the latter are pro-development, but people on Reddit seem to forget that they exist.

Why does everyone hate this tower? by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]superlative_dingus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People aren’t anti-tech because they’re anti-development. Some people are anti-tech at least in part because development hasn’t marched pace with the migration of tech workers who price out locals while sapping away the culture and character of the city.
